Google's current stance on patents with Android would have prevented Google from ever having existed

The absolute inability of Android's enthusiasts to recognize Apple as anything other than a evil amalgamation of fallacious badness has few parallels outside of North Korea's official stance on the United States. The difference is that Android users have the facts in front of them. They're not really operating within a insane fiction erected by a censoring dictatorship. They are voluntarily choosing to live inside an iron curtain of hypocrisy and doublespeak, and suffering for it with shoddy technology experience. How ruthlessly absurd!

Wow. You just compared people who support Android to a government which shoots its own people.  Even for you, DED, that is special.

AppleInsider - it is time to admit that this guy is a liability and an embarrassment to your website, and take away his poison pen. When people (wrongly) stereotype Apple users as mindless, sanctimonious or dogmatic, this sort of thing is why. DED's absurd comparisons, indiscriminate slurs at anyone whose favourite technology company isn't Apple, and ridiculous use of phrases like 'iron curtain' and 'evil amalgamation of fallacious badness' are the sort of thing which gives Apple users a bad name.

Face it - this guy is an incorrigible, paid-up fanboy, and for the good of the wider Apple community he needs to be told to tone it down or put down the pen.

"Paid-up fanboy"! That's rich! So you Fandroid scum do it for free? What's amazing is, I think most of you do. The paid shills on here all seem to be SamScum trolls. Your delusional belief systems would be simply pathetic if you'd keep them to yourselves, but unfortunately they're doing active harm when spewed forth by the mass media. Keep it in your pants, you insane fuçkers!

From the OP:
By its IPO year, Google had already achieved a dominant share of the Internet's web search traffic, widely outpacing both Yahoo and Microsoft. It earned this status by developing a better product. Google's search results were not only more useful, but they were also presented within a clean, user-respectful interface rather than the annoying cesspool of flashing banner ads common among its competitors.
So where in the hell is this "more useful" "better product"? All I get is a bunch of totally irrelevant çrap that I can only assume represents whoever paid Google the most to wind up on top of any search. Aside from the Wiki page, which I could have gotten by going there in the first damned place, all I get is page after page of paid product placement. Google is totally worthless.

Paid shills where? an accusation of libel nice way to argue!
Your colourful use of language seems to indicate your just as bad as any "fandroid" but if you want to be just as delusional as those you seem to hate so be it.

Two possibiities: Either you haven't been on here enough to see the paid SamScum trolls (Like the gomer who ends every post with "Mighty Samsung fighting!"), in which case you're ignorant, or you have, and you're lying, so take your pick.

I hate Fandroids because they want to suck everybody down into their cesspit of mediocrity while sliming anybody who tries to do better, and want us to kiss Google's ass for the sewage bath. No thanks.

Any you Googlesuckers who come on here after any of DED's editorials are perfectly at liberty to dispute any of his facts—but you never can, so it's whine, whine, whine. Start your own blog or get a gig at an existing site and back up your "Nuh-uh!"s with facts and figures. (I'm holding my sides laughing.)

your assuming those that troll are being  paid and not just taking the piss, which some respond to in the same manner thus ensuring they carry on.

Although some of the Apple fanbois can be just the same Tastowe being a prime example or Sudonym, who just seems to be a reverse troll in the extreme.

any forum will attract those who have extreme views for any subject, sometimes you just have to sift the weird from the useful.

Leaving aside your infantile use of the word 'Fandroid':

Goodness me. We're talking about two multinational technology companies, each of whose sole interest is making as much money as possible for their shareholders. Frankly, it's mildly frightening that you are so emotionally invested in this. Go outside.

I gave it a try and would disagree.  In particular, even using the advanced search option I couldn't get it to search within a country domain - even following their example.

For instance, a search term requiring 30 characters:

Quote:

Your search - +domain:au +olympus +"12-40mm" - did not match any documents.

yielded nothing

Whereas with DuckDuckgo, a search term of 23 characters yielded many useful results of exactly the nature you would expect -

site:au olympus 12-40mm

I don't like the default of 1xquick which seems to be OR when a multi-term query is more useful if AND is the default.

How about some actual Apple news here considering this site is called Apple Insider. Other sites are running a rumor about Apple actively testing ARM based Macs. I consider that infinitely more interesting than another click bait article on the competition.

DED is by far my favorite tech journalist. It's really only because of him why I read appleinsider, and Apple ][ comments. But when he injects politics into his articles, it does become really annoying. Even when he does so on twitter.

What??? When I still used Google a few years back it had tons of adds when you search. I checked and i still get these annoying links that i never ever use. Usually it gives them because of one search term that has nothing to do with the multiparameter search I wanted <img class=" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

Then they did some optimizations to the search functions and I stopped using it because it fu)(/&&ed up my search results because it wasn't what I expected and was used to. I think they can keep that door jam for themselves. It only works better for some no US termed searches is my opinion.

Careful there. DED/Corrections might see this, get a little b**t-hurt and respond with misdirection (ie: not addressing your original post), childish insults or simply pout, choosing to delete any and all criticism at a later time.

Another great article about DED and AI......
No wait wasn't there something about giggle???

I trust you are paranoid,
And remember, or can find in research, the old chestnut,
"Just because you are paranoid,
doesn't mean someone is not out to get you."

"They" seem to gone to plan b,
Probably because fact checking
And screaming "editorial!"
Are not working so well.

Plz AI stop DED, write about apple.
I luv DED, plz stop saying things that hurt other people's feelings.

Back to the drawing board,
These tirades grow old already.

I think DED left out a few things. Google received their initial funding from two venture capitalists with nothing more than patent protection for their search algorithm. Without this patent it's very unlikely Google could have convinced anyone to give then any cash.

DED is correct about the main point of this article - that Google only exists today because of a single patent. They never would have got off the ground nor survived against competitors without patent protection.

Article problem number one: It's not Google's Pagerank patent. They've licensed it from Stanford just as any other company can do if it wishes.

Problem two. The author makes the leap to argue Google search could not have been created except by the grace of a patent. Microsoft, IBM and Apple all became viable companies without the assistance of a single software patent. Trade secrets and the laws applicable to them are powerful

Problem three: Google has never maintained that "it and its Android partners should be able to infringe upon any patents Apple has related to iOS". Another leap.

Finally, it's completely possible other search providers have infringed on Google IP. Not only possible but considering there's 10's of thousands it becomes quite likely. That Google hasn't ever sued a direct competitor makes any claim of Google's attitude towards wielding IP to fend off competition as being disingenuous . . . well disingenuous.

In Google's case patents appear to serve only defensive purposes and not generally used to block competition. Simply being a better, harder working and more creative search provider is what made them successful. For that matter Apple's revenue doesn't ride on the back of software patents either. Those pertaining to iOS have hardly been strong enough to get much if any credit for iDevice success. That success comes from being better, harder working and more creative than their competitors.

If there has ever been an author at AppleInsider more in need of an editor, I'd like to meet them.

"Looking backward, the patented concept of PageRank (like most any other patent ever filed) might be viewed as a trivial, obvious and inevitable discovery. It is the very kind of thing that Google and its most strident fans commonly insist shouldn't be patented at all: a software concept built upon a series of algorithms."

Dilger's writing is a real shame. That paragraph is typical of his run-on sentence style that has led me to believe he is paid by the word.

I don't claim to be a particularly gifted writer, however I do recognize that "brevity is the soul of wit" and essential to writing well.

Please hire a skilled editor to surgically remove the mounds of fat from Dilger's submissions.
