There's no need to share every photo you've taken. You can create galleries with exactly the photos you want and share them. You can even customise them with graphics and text if you so desire. This is all possible on Mac, iPhone and iPad. Those photo streams are presented to those you share as a beautiful gallery or can be viewed as a slideshow. You can allow others to add to or comment on the photos or download them. Finally, you don't need a Mac or an iOS device to see shared photo streams.
Really? It didn't start out that way, did it? I tried it when I first got iOS6 (or was it 5?) and didn't like it. Maybe I just didn't understand it well enough. I haven't really given it much thought since.

My Apple ID is still a .Mac account but now I also have a .icloud as well which can get confusing at times. I am able to log in to various Apple services with either one and from what I understand they are somehow the same account. I wish I could just retire the .mac one and only have the iCloud one as my Apple ID.

You can't - it's not that simple. Many places online do not recognize @mac.com as a valid email address. I want to use my @ mac.com. Not the others. You can - it was ridiculously simple. My mac.com address is still active and very much a valid email address. As is my me.com address. They are just aliases for my .iCloud.com account. They are all "merged" as one Apple ID. As such, I don't lose any purchase history.
In order to get this seamless merging of .mac and .me into your .iCloud account, you had to follow Apple's instructions to "move" from one service to the next, and of course, not allow either your .mac or MobileMe service to lapse prior to the transition to the next service. If it lapsed, or if you did not follow instructions to migrate from the old account and instead created a new account (with perhaps the same handle), it would not be merged, and you would end up creating new Apple ID instead. If your old .mac or .me email addresses are no longer valid for receiving mail, then it means you did not follow the instructions to "move" them to iCloud, and consequently, any online services that query Apple's SMTP servers (Apple still owns the mac.com and me.com domains) would get an error code back when they try to verify your .mac or .me email address.
Why can't they just do a $99 package that includes 1Tb of cloud and bring iWeb back so you can control what others see i.e. family page for photos tagged family, friends page etc. Or even better yet... Firstly, they're clearly competing with Dropbox rather than Google. They've significantly undercut Dropboxs pricing (even adding in the free gigs most average people would end up with). I appears Apples strategy is to try to keep people in the ecosystem, rather than build a business on what they've stated was and they apparently consider an ancillary service - not a product. It's simply a way to keep people from defecting to Dropbox as a means of file storage for their devices. For the average consumer (not prosumer), If it's built in and works simply, they'll just use it.
Comparing it to google is far off the mark. Google Drive, though cheap as hell, is far too slow sync wise for multiple large files and is very wonky syncing things like docx files, particularly if you are using a mac. I use the 1T for my media files (movies, tv shows, music, non-iphoto pictures) as inexpensive backup but it's been unreliable, excruciatingly slow to upload changes or new files (download not horrible but not nearly what I got from Dropbox) and I've had to go online to the Google Drive site to delete files that I deleted from my comp (they were retained on the site) because it didn't sync the delete. In fact it created an empty folder along with a folder with the files in it. Further, Google Drive horribly handles file deletion by making you empty the trash online only rather than letting you do so locally, and it counts your trash as part of the total memory, so if you don't regularly empty the trash you will run out of memory (this can be really a pain when you are moving files around or deleting files and replacing them with another set of files.
I figure (and hope with crossed fingers) iCloud Drive will be far faster in uploading and have better local file handling. If so, when 1T pricing is available I'll likely have to pay the up charge, unless it's ridiculous. Google refuses to improve their issues thus far and they are discussed extensively on their own discussion threads. The only answer you get is "have you checked your internet connection".

I think it really depends on where you live, in Switzerland I can upload a 2GB file to Google Drive in about 10 minutes, iCloud takes about 30 minutes for a 400MB file. Apples web services in general have always been very slow where I live, I have complained to both Apple and Swisscom about this but nothing has been done thus far. The fastest cloud storage for me in Switzerland is OneDrive though but that has a lot to do with how close Microsofts data center is to me, just 10 miles away from where I live. Google's Datacenter is also really close by, residing in Zurich, just 20 miles away, Apples is all the way in Ireland. Just do a trace route on Google Drive to see how far and how many routers you have to go through before your actually hitting their servers, it might surprise you. For OneDrive it literally just goes from Microsoft through my ISP Swisscom to me, that's it. What I'm saying is it might be a good idea to do some research before you decide on any cloud storage solution. Where you might think iCloud is the fastest, just might not be the case because of your location and of course this also applies to Google Drive and OneNote.

Yes I did, but I didn't say Apple iCloud was bad just that where I live it happens to be slow. As stated before both Google and Microsoft have data centers in Switzerland so it's an obvious assumption that because they both use Swisscom and I also reside on the same network, that it will be faster. Routing to Ireland however, unfortunately has to go through Germany do to a deal Swisscom has with Deutsche-Telekom, this presents a lot of issues. Even though Germany has seen a huge increase in internet traffic they still haven't adopted a lot of the new technologies available like OUTCF to help against loops and packet losses. Germany is a borderline socialist state, it takes them forever to adopt new policies in not only their government but also public works, including their ISP's, especially Deutsche-Telekom. Swisscom needs to strike a deal with Belgium like they have been promising for years and bypass Germany to get to the northern countries faster. These are things that I thought weren't necessary in my original comment but you attached yourself to the conversation because I said something negative about Apple. A lot actually, thank you so much for asking. I had a lumpectomy on my left side and a complete mastectomy on my right which seemed to be very successful, the big problem however was that the cancer had spread to my left lung in which most was almost fully removed. I'll never be able to accomplish my dream of being a world class free diver but my recovery has been upgraded to above 50 percent so I have hope, where there was none before. I was staying in a beautiful private clinic by the name of Clinique Générale-Beaulieu near Geneva up until pretty recently. I still have a long road ahead of me but at least I am at home now with my husband, kids and fluffy beer loving Malamute pillow.

What's the old saying, nothing is worth doing unless you do it right. I was always convinced that my parents were Chinese in a former life as they were always a little overambitious about my education. Even though I am Swiss I went to an international school instead of public, started university at age 16 and was forced to not just play the piano but the violen and then the cello. I'm not in anyway stating that I'm some kind super nerd made from the best parts of lesser nerds just that I had looney parents. So what they created was an individual who always did a little to much for her own good. Breathing from one lung is not much different from one except that I get winded quicker when doing something strenreous like going to bathroom after a bowl of chili but most people are after sampling my husbands cooking.
