QT keynote quality?

Hey guys, I do not get TechTV so I will be relying on QT Webcast. I plan on connecting my iBook to my TV for a somewhat bigger picture. What kind of connection can I expect? I will be doing it with a 56k modem. Will it be really bad and choppy and almost unwatchable? I really want to see it...

With a good connection..

I get a frame rate of between 2 and 6 on my 56k depending on the amount of change/action happening on screen. yes the image is VERY blocky.

I use some different modem scripts to get a better connection, and quit all apps except for quicktime. Then I start the movie and fullscreen it (very blocky)

Why don't you try it with the NY 2001 keynote stream?

It will be really really really crappy. The best you can do is to find another place with at least ADSL (school, workplace, library)

You can try some of the old saved MW webcasts on apple.com and try them on your connection. Multiply the crappiness with at least three and you have what you can expect on monday.

56K?! don't waste your time. it's not worth it unless it is your ONLY option.

you may actually want to lower your QT settings down to 28.8k/sec so you only get the audio stream.

I unfortunately had to watch the last MW with a 56k connection and the reult was pretty crappy.

Basically I would get about 3-4minutes of smallest quality video/audio... then 30 seconds of image freeze with broken audio... then when there would be enough data again, it would be good again. I was on a PC and had DU Meter on (shows data UL and DL meter) and I could visually see when I was getting data or not.

Sometimes the 30second dry spell was becuase I just wouldnt get data at all.

OK, maybe its also because modem connections just plain suck here and Ive been pampered with cable at home and T3 lines when I was in college

Still, seriously get yourself somewhere you can get satellite, TechTV, and Apple Store, or a friend with ADSL/CABLE... heck even a dual channel ISDN would be better.

actually, also join the AI IRC channel instead too. Its fun as hell... stressful, but fun.

Good idea. If it is really bad, I will give that a shot. Unfortunately I am gonna be stuck in the house that day so this is my only option. I booted up QT about 10 minutes ago to try and view the MWNY feed linked above, and it is still "requesting data."

THis could be VERY ugly come Monday.

I guess last resort will be a page with "live" reports (like what macNN usually does---will they be doing that this year? It would be mroe convienent than following a chat as I will probably be working out during the KN anyway and just have it on in the background--just hit refresh after every set! (I have my Bowflex and comp/TV in the same room

)

I was watching the latter half of the MWNY keynote earlier today (10 on X was BORING) on my cable connection and was only getting 10 fps. Apple is going to have some server trouble this time around because I'm guessing more people are planning to watch than usual. Hopefully they can keep up with it all...

Oh well, I have TechTV.

Just to chime in, don't even bother with a modem. It's pretty godawful with a broadband connection, since the servers are always massively overloaded, and so i imagine a 56k modem would be useless.

For MWNY 2000 i was in a computer lab, and had four computers running the stream simultaneously, i had to keep shifting my chair from one computer to the other since each one would spend about half the time stalled on one frame with broken audio.

I'd recommend just hanging out in a chat room or listening to the audio (if that works at all..)

I've never had a good webstream, to tell you the truth, even on my cable modem. That is, unless you consider a teeny, smeary little block of choppy video that stalls every few minutes (or with any panning camera shots), and audio that's.. well, I won't complain, at least the audio works for the most part.

Agreed, if you're on a modem, go to a Mac-related IRC channel (like any #macintosh on big networks, #orangeinsider on irc.webchatting.com (or <a href="http://www.orangeinsider.com/chat/"; target="_blank">click here</a>), or the AI IRC channel.. or AtAT, or MacMinute, or MacNN, or any site doing live updates. or just keep refreshing these forums if they happen to be up, you know there will be 23428394234 threads about each new product...). With any of those options, you'll be hearing and learning about the new developments just about as fast as we do, plus you'll be able to discuss and hear commentary on them.

The last two or three times I saw it from a 512 DSL. Perfect and smooth all the way. But now I only got a 256. Do anyone know the bandwith of their streams I know there is a 1000 and a 300. I wouldn' t be able to get either but whats the next step downwards?

Well at least I haven´t got problems this time. I am going to see it at an Apple Denmarks arrangment at our national broadcasting company. probably the only place We are able to recieve a decent video feed here.

The file is kinda big, 13megs. But at the end it says "On TechLive this Monday at 9pm" The 'live' must be from show name. I hope that changes.

If you are using an iBook then is there anychance you have an airport card ? If you do you might do better to go to somewhere that offers airport internet broadcasts- didnt I hear that starbucks and others do this in the US ? Here in Tokyo I was recently at a 'Blends' coffee shop that offers an 11Mbps wireless broadcast fro free as part of NTT's testing of their technology..... I used an iBook they had on display to connect through IE there and it sizzled.

Sooo, if you 1. have an airport card, and 2. can find a place that offers broadband airport hosting (starbucks?) then that might be a better option than your 56k land line.

Here is what you do go to the local comp store. most have all comps hooked up to a cable conection pull up a box and watch it
