Apple's iMovie for Mac update resolves unexpected crashing problem, improves stability

Apple on Tuesday issued a minor update to its OS X version of iMovie, introducing a bug fix that remedies an issue in which some users would see the app unexpectedly crash or quit without warning.

iMovie version 10.0.4 is a minor point update released to resolve a lone issue that could cause the video editing software to quit unexpectedly. Along with the bug fix, Apple includes the usual stability improvements in its list of changes.

Apple last updated iMovie for Mac in April, bringing new content sorting features and font options, upgraded titles and user interface tweaks to the consumer level video editing app.

The last 10.0.3 version of the app also noted a fix to an issue that could cause iMovie to quit. It is unclear if today's build is a continuation of Apple's efforts to rid the app of bug, or is a new fix for a separate problem.

Existing iMovie users can download the latest version of the app for free from the Mac App Store, while new users can purchase the app for $14.99.

Are they going to continue in updating this app, or will it be integrated in the new Photos app next year? Because iTunes is already preinstalled on a new Mac and is a free download anyway, iPhoto will be obsolete and replaced by Photos next year, so what about this app? The new Photos includes video, and since they say that everything will be synced over to iCloud in 'full resolution' I presume they mean that videos shot with an iPhone or iPad will be 1080p in iCloud.

Video is an arena in which I wish I had more time to play. A couple dozen TB hard drives would also be nice.

This is what I don't like now, I have videos in Aperture and in iMovie.  In fairness I never did much with movies to create a workflow and Apple doesn't offer much in suggesting one.  Not the end of the wold by any means, but I wish things were a little "more structured" for the lack of a better term.

I also wish I had more time to edit videos. Most don't get forwarded to or seen by friends as I don't have time to edit out the nonsense and create really nice 4 second scenes. And the fact that I'm lucky enough to pop in a larger HDD into my oMP when I need to makes it even more...[fill in the blank here]

I agree. Whilst iMovie and FCP are really good editing suites, the asset management leaves to be desired. With iCloud in mind, mind you. I say this as iCloud is indeed capable of storing videos, yet it only syncs photos by default. Only when I import my photos and videos into Aperture, others can see my videos after I've shared them on a Shared Stream.

My workflow is to import my photos into Aperture, whilst the phone is docked, and I manually copy over the videos from Image Capture into a folder. In the Finder I rename the videos to my preference, and I import them as referenced into Aperture. This way my photos are managed and on SSD, and the videos are referenced and on HDD.

I really hope I can fine tune my workflow with next years' Photos application, but if not I'll continue as Aperture won't all of a sudden stop working.

Thanks for the workflow feedback. I like the idea of referencing the videos.
