There must be something planned. I had told my brother to wait until after today to buy his new system, but Im not sure what to say now. The towers all pale in comparisson. An 867+15" LCD will cost about $1200 more than an iMac with a super drive. Im not sure what to tell him.

    Tell your brother to go out and buy a Dell and get his money's worth!

    Go back to your hole, troll.

    [quote] The iMac is 800 mhz g4,100 mhz, sdram, gf2mx, ata/66. Absolutely nothing new there in fact I would call the 100 mhz a significant step backwards. There is not a SINGLE innovation hardware-wise.

    Is the iMac an appealing design, probably. Do the iApps add value the computing experience that we call Macintosh. Yes they do and they add enough value to even justify a higher price. However the iMac does not showcase a SINGLE new hardware innovation.

    It is the same ol'Apple. Yesterdays tech at today's price with a due date of tomorrow.

    If anything I think this shows there is NO direction with regard to processor speed. Apple had a lot of trouble delivering the 700 mhz iMacs. (very similar long ramp up and very limited availability) Now the 700 mhz is gone and we see 600 mhz everywhere. (700 mhz G4 will return in its place but in MARCH)

    You forget something...

    It is standard practice with Apple to introduce a new product, and give it an old mobo, chip, and video card. For examples, look at the cube, the Titanium, and this current iMac, and the iBook.

    When the first update comes, Apple usually updates the internals of the new computer. The titanium got a faster bus, better G4s, faster and better video chipset. The iBook got a 100 MHz bus.

    I suspect that at MWNY, the iMac will get a big update:

    133 MHz bus.

    Apollo G4 around 1 GHz.

    Maybe a 17" LCD model? (wishful thinking, I know).

    Possibly a new GPU in at least one model, a GF3.

    This is how Apple works, they first update the overall design, but leave the internals alone, then they begin to update the internals.

    As I see it, the G4 and the G5 are going to coexist much like the G3 and G4 have:

    Apollo G4--> Titanium, iMac.

    G5-->Powermacs

    These chips are on their way, and we know that they are both fast. They will not close the GHz gap, but they will keep it small enough so that it doesn't look too bad. And the G5 is going to mop the floor with Pentiums and Athlons. The Apollo will just be more of a good thing, and the fact that it's in iMacs will be sweet! That iMac is going to look better and better, by next Christmas it's going to be on everyone's lists!

    Just give Apple some time. They are in a transition period right now, with OS X and all, and it's a strain on their R&D budget. Apple doesn't have as much cash to spend as other companies, so they have to spend it wisely to get the maximum return.

    Thats a good idea. Dell has a top notch product. Since August, I have only had to send 5 of them back to the company for HW failures.
