Mikes Show Floor Report.

A little report from the floor. The new iMacs kick total ass!!! the body is not shiny like the iBook and nether is the screen. it is frosted. it looks very nice. also if you tilt the screen to say a 90 degree angle and then move the arm up the screen tilts to maintain the 90 degee angl. It is fabuluse! A bad thing thogh, the power button in on the back of the computer! this is pretty dumb. I was hopping it would be a touch button like on the studio displys. I love mine I just pas my finger over the front of my disply at night to put her* to sleep. (*my G4 733 QS) And the internal iMac speaker blows! Now that OS X is default the iMac includes a few new OS X apps like: Otto Matic, Quicken, AppleWorks, and a sientific coculator as well as the regular one, and of course iPhoto.

The new iBook (14") is a monstor and a shame in apples product line. It looks very ugly. imagin the keybord of the iBook but around the top and sides of the key boar there is about 2" of nothing. It sucks!! But I supose if you have bad eyes...

iPhoto (witch I totaly nailed in my predition here: <a href="http://forums.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=000158"; target="_blank">http://forums.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi ?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=000158) is just ok as you might know. I got a chance to talk with an iPhoto engeneer about the lack of features. He said, as you might imgain, that iPhoto was rushed out the door inorder to ship as a promo with the new iMac. And that "tons of features were striped out at the last second inorder to let it ship on time". Some of those features inclued: naming rolls, searching by pic names, selecting were your pics are imporeted to, and color and brightness controls. He said "expect many iPhoto updates in the coming months, we are just getting started".

Any questions you guys whant me to ask tomarow on the floor? I will post the ansers tomaorw.

Thanks for the info Mike. You're doing a good job. I do have a few questions. Did you hear anything about iMovie or AppleWorks in terms of updates? Also, what was the general feeling about the iMac from the other people there? If you can gage that. One last thing, people were wondering where the reset button was, can you find it? Thanks.

There is no power button the iMac keyboard, right? Where are the other two USB ports? There are three on the back and two elsewhere, I heard.

I imagine those two are found on the keyboard.

Yes they are on the keyboard as they are now. If you look at a picture close you can see them.

He said something that made one think he meant 5 usb. I think it was bad enunciation and/or timing between syllables and words.

He actually said "5 USB ports". Everyone at the Apple Store was like "wha?!". Then we saw the 3 on the back and figured he meant.."you get 5 USB ports in the whole package". Which is true.

5 plugs but you use one up to use the other two (on the keyboard I assume?). So you can only have 4 free under any config. Right?
  • Reply 11 of 40
OH! You use on up for the mouse too. So it's three free under a normal config. Which is more than most but it aint 5 open USB ports.

I was annoyed by that too. I clearly heard "5 USB ports" and I was pretty excited, when I checked it out at the Apple Store there were only 3 (4 open with the keyboard). What a gyp!

I knew it was too good to be true when Steve said 5 USB ports.

From what i've seen/read the usb works the same way that it has always worked on an imac. You plug your keyboard into the machine. The keyboard has two usb ports on it, but one is used by the mouse. Thus leaving to free (one on the keyboard and one on the machine).

The only difference with the new imacs is that there are now three on the machine, so after you configure you have three three free.

One interesting note about the new iMac is that although it does have three usb ports, they share two usb controllers. A bit annoying if you ask me.

Edit: I just thought of a question Mike can ask. Mike, if you can, try and find out how the usb ports work with regard to the controllers. Are two of the ports shared on one controller and the third port has its own dedicated controller? Or do all three simply share both controllers equally? I ask because it seems as though it is more powerful for the two controllers to be shared equally. For example (this is strictly theoretical, i know real world situations are not quite so simple) if you had three USB devices each requiring 8-Mbps then the only way for this to be achieved would be for the 24Mbps (two controllers, 12Mbps each) equally throughout the three ports because if two ports are forced to share one controller and were both in use then they would be restricted to 6Mbps each (not enough for the devices).

Make sense? or am i completely confused about how usb works?

    Hey Mike!

I just ordered the 14inch iBook, can you give me other impressions besides the 2inch void around the keyboard?

Can you take a pic of the new ontop of the old iBook to see real difference? Whats your impression otherwise?

You don´t make sense to me but that because I know sh!t about controllers aso.

But I do happen to know that two of the USBs share one controller and the third and the modem share the other. Didn´t know it was possible but that should be the way it works. Don´t know what that means if you don´t use the modem.

there is sort of a reason for that. it's still poor placement but it isn't neccessarily needed. With the new iMac and OS X default Apple expects everyone to use sleep instead of shut down unless neccessary. the new iMac goes to deep sleep just like the old ones. works very well. wakes up in a second. no reason ever to power down completely with OS X unless moving the computer or installing hardware

Okay, here are 2 free product ideas somebody can go out and make tons of money on:

    1) A little clip that attaches to the back of your desk and holds the FireWire & USB cable ends. This way you can leave the cable plugged in to the Mac, and when you don't need it just let it slip off the desk -- only to be held by the clip.

    2) A more high tech approach would be a FireWire + USB hub that is a 10" diameter disk that sits under the new iMac and matches it exactly. It could even plug directly into the iMacs ports, and then replicate them out 360 degrees around the base so that you have no shortage of ports. That would be a real digital hub.

Make them come in different colours too.
