This may cure any post-MWSF bitterness you may have towards Apple. I found this posted by 'iBrotha' at Mac Observer Forums.

<a href="http://developer.intel.com/technology/easeofuse/conceptpc.htm"; target="_blank">http://developer.intel.com/technology/easeofuse/conceptpc.htm</a>;

It's a bunch of PC concepts... I think <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" /> . Evidently they're trying to come up with stunning new designs.

They're stunning all right. One looks like the head of the monster from Alien. Another looks like a rectangularly headed lifeform took a shotgun blast to one of its eyes.

WARNING!!!! YOU MAY GO BLIND IF YOU GAZE UPON THE HORROR IN THIS LINK, BUT YOU'LL BE saved IF YOU REMEMBER THAT APPLE, DEAR SWEET BELOVED APPLE, WOULD NEVER INFLICT THE LINKED VISUAL CACAPHONY UPON THE COMPUTING PUBLIC. IN FACT, YOU MAY LOOK LIKE THIS  (BLIND, BUT HAPPY) AFTERWARDS.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! GOOD LUCK STALWART APPLEINSIDERS!!!!!

Hoping the spots and images on my retinas go away.....

    I like Bonsai.

Concept PC 2002 looks remarkably like the Apple Lisa.

Enchant looks like a bloated TV.

eXo looks like an xbox crossed with that funky G5 rendering from a few years ago.

Heh. The "G.R.A.N.N.Y." What a name.

I thought some of them were rather interesting. Of course, some were total crap. I'm glad that, at the least, someone's considering new designs. maybe none of them will ever see the light of day, but at least they're thinking.

some look remarkably like macs, mac prototypes, or sketches i've seen people post on boards like these. (not surprisingly, none of the ones i liked were the ones created by hp or intel. go figure).

Interesting concepts but mostly all were crap. They all had that "PC" look to them. Ive's is the best and Apple's got him...thank God...

That's horrible. Yuck. Why do they even bother?

Some of them are good ideas with a not-so-great aesthetic, some are bad ideas with a mediocre aesthetic... I don't think that any of them come close to Apple/Ives' clean, minimalistic aesthetic, you're right. However, the Bonsai, the Titan, the one that looks like a weird flower (the name escapes me, now)... really good design ideas, interesting in the very least. If they had years, Ives, and his team of well-paid associates, I'm sure they would all look just as good as the iMac.

They are just concepts being thrown around. Nothing more really.

Pick up a copy of Appledesign to see the difference between concepts and eventual product.

    OMG! MY EYES! AHHHH!

I will never see again (I'm using viavoice to type this because I cannot find the keyboard!)

The worst was that oversized X-box. Somehow they managed to make it bigger & uglier then the X-box (just when you thought it could be any worst ... diproven again!)

Well, the concepts in AppleDesign were nice enough looking that I'd buy them.

Some of the concepts outdo the final version IMO.

I couldn't believe the one with scales or dorsal fins or thorns or what ever in the hell they had coming out of the top.

    It is just SO GODDAMNED GOOD to own/be owned by Apple. My Windows machine at work (sob) just reinforces the 'Brazil' like corporate culture that I labor in day by day <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" /> , one step at a time <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" /> <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" /> , twelve steps <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" /> <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" /> <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

    oh, oh... <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Oh my Gawd, you mean the pc world has finally caught up to the Lisa?

 Which is what, about 17-18 years old...

apparently that is Intel's "ease of use" initiative.

Just hate to see their "power user" initiative

I just can't get over how bad some of those designs are. Is anyone moderating those images or can anyone post their "great" ideas?

    It's truly amazing....

you get spoiled and think that elegant design and functionality all-in-one are easy to do...

but these things really make Apple seem way way way WAY exceptional

WHERE did they get these designers? seems like they just trolled the local video game depot or anime book shop, or the alley Behind the factory.

What's worst is that you can see them trying to assimilate Apples aesthetic and completly missing the point.

Some of these leave me ROTFL-ing!!!!!

    I mean, look at "Fun-Kshun" -- heehee

    or

Ikebana? oooh "innovative....Beautiful addition to any PC environment" ---lol

at least the 'Deep Forest' would have neen a really nice design about 3 or 4 years ago.

and that 2002 thing still looks like a Microwave Oven . . . as well as the Lisa

Man... if they want to combine computers and art, they should find an artist to do the art part.

    (Most of) Those were crap.

: rys his own eyes out with a sharp rusty icepick::

man... those wacky intel people have no idea how to do industrial design.
  • Reply 17 of 17
I think the problem with intel designs is that they are all attempts at expanding (and over-expanding) on the plastic-box design. Most of the designs aren't pure: they're just plastic boxes with tacked on details. And there definitely a point at which there is over-design. Since the computer is in the end a tool, it has to be clean. Those frivolous plastic panels on some of them do nothing except jack up the production cost and get in the way.
