Argumentative Essay

English Period 2

\tThere has been much controversy over the years about which computer platform is

better, Apple Computer or the Microsoft Windows Operating System with Intel

hardware. In my opinion the Mac is far superior than the "WinTel" computers and

Apple is superior to the rest of the PCÂ* industry. The opposing view shared by

95% of the worlds population that a Mac is not as good as a PC is just

misguided. "5 down, 95 to go."

\tApple provides a better computing experience because they have control over the

entire user experience because not only do they make the software they make the

hardware. Microsoft is a software company that makes the Windows Operating

System. Companies such as Dell, Gateway, Compaq, and Sony make the hardware on

which the Windows OS can run. You can think of Microsoft as the mother ship that

provides power for the smaller units to carry out its mission. The experience

that Microsoft provides for you is far less than great. Microsoft is a company

that makes money from its customers dependancy on their products. During this

recession nobody is innovating so companies like Dell,Gateway,Compaq, and Sony

cry like babies for their bottle which turns out to be Microsoft's arguable

innovation in Windows XP, Microsoft's next generation OS. Apple on the other

hand controls the entire user experience because they make the hardware and the

software which integrate with each other to create a seamless experience that is

far and away a more sophisticated approach to providing useful technology. How

can hardware work without software? It cant. Microsoft lives and dies with its

hardware suppliers, Apple for some reason (probably logic) thinks that software

only works with the correct hardware. Apple's Mac OS X happens to be the most

advance Operating System on the planet because of the unshakable Unix

underpinnings and of course the legendary Apple ease-of-use. All of this help

make Apple the clear cut winner in terms of user experience. Leadership matters,

philosophy matters, and passion matters. Apple's founder and current CEO, Steve

Jobs, is massively responsible for the recent success that Apple has

experienced.\tSteve Jobs' life story is a fascinating one to say the least, he is

a symbolic figure of what Silicon Valley stands for. Steve is the quintessence

of what a high tech CEO should be, cool. Steve is an egomaniac, he wants

everything to be perfect to his liking, Steve demands passion and craftsmanship

from his artists (employes) to create masterpieces of technology. Unlike Bill

Gates, Steve Jobs doesn't care about how much market share his company has as

long as he is doing better than his competition. Bill Gates was quoted saying in

1997, "Why is Steve coming back to Apple, he knows he cant win." This is where

Bill Gates is too short sighted, Jobs came back to Apple after leaving them for

11 years to start a new company called Pixar, but that is another story. Steve

Jobs has realized that he has lost the market share battle long ago but he also

realizes that he has the necessary tools to have better products than anyone.

Steve and Apple all have passion, talent, and craftsmanship. This passion rubs

off on the products which is cause for people to take notice of their

innovations and then make a purchasing decision. Apple wants to make our lives

better, just because Microsoft has unlimited financing compared to Apple, Apple

has the drive to keep innovating while Microsoft flounders in their success.

Apple does have a lot of money too with a cash hoard of over 4.4 billion dollars

in cash. Apple's CEO, Steve Jobs, is the driving force behind the success of

Apple and he helps Apple innovate themselves to the point where people will have

to sooner or later realize that Apple exists to make our lives better for the

people now and for generations yet to come.

\tOver the years, there have been more than a few misconceptions about Macs.

Let's take a look at some of the most popular ones. Everyone uses Windows. If

your an accountant, your most likely surrounded by beige Wintel boxes. But if

you work in nearly every creative field, you most likely use a Mac. Like in

graphic arts, advertising and publishing. Or in Hollywood. Or in science based

industries like biotech. Or in education, where half of the computers are

Apples. Or if you are President of the United States (our two most recent

presidents, a Democrat and a Republican, both use Macs). Even 25% of America's

lawyers use Macs. In all, over 30 million people use Macs in their homes,

offices and schools every day. Macs don't work with PCs. Simply untrue. Every

day millions of documents,Â* e-mailsÂ* and instant messages are sent between Macs

and PCs. Worddocuments, Excel spreadsheets and Power Point presentations exchanged. E-mails

delivered and instant messages shuttled back and forth. This isn't news because

it happens silently, daily, with no fanfare. That's because all Macs are

designed to work seamlessly with PCs andÂ* connectÂ* into PC networks to easily

access files and folders. The rest of the world should get along so well. The

software I need isn't available for Macs. There are over 15,000 applications

available for the Mac, in every category imaginable. Productivity programs from

Microsoft Office to FileMaker. Design programs from Photoshop to Maya. Film

making tools from Final Cut Pro to After Effects. Finance programs from Quicken

to MYOB. And games from The Sims to Tony Hawk . But if you do encounter that

rare program which isn't available for Mac, you can still run it right on your

Mac using a program called Virtual PC. Still think there's something your

missing? Go toÂ* apple.com and check for yourself. I promise not to say, I told

you so. Windows has caught up with the Mac. It cant be denied that Microsoft has

made a good business out of copying the innovative Mac OS. And, truth be told,

Windows XP is their best effort to date. But Mac OS X has sent them back to the

drawing boards. Particularly with respect to graphics, everything digitalÂ* (like

music, movies and photography), ease of use and elegance. In other words, all

the things that make a state-of-the-art operating system, well,

state-of-the-art. And I am not the only one who thinks so. Consider critics like

the Detroit Free Press, who recently proclaimed, "The new OS X for Mac runs

circles around Windows XP." OrÂ* ZDNets David Coursey, who praises Mac OS X as,

"The nicest operating system Ive ever seen." And last but not least, Macs are

far easier to use than PCs. Guilty as charged.

\tIt is easy for me to see how Apple differs in a good way than the other PC

companies but it is hard for the average consumer to know the "ins and outs" of

the way the PC industry works and what Apple's role is in that industry. Apple

is a hardware and software company which makes them unique because they are one

of a kind. Apple will continue to thrive on their ability to exploit other

companies through their ultimate control of the business process. Can and will

people switch to the Mac? The answer lies in the decision making process of each

one of you, try and make the right decision for yourself and for generations yet

to come.

the format that it is in was a requirement for some reason.

There were no requirements as to citations. I have to say this thing in front of the class, I really want it to persuade poeple. My teacher said that facts can come from any source.

I'm afraid that if this is a speech you didn't do to well laying it out. it's quite a mouthful and 80% of it will be lost/forgotten by your listeners and instead of just having index cards with topic/subtopic/detail listings to refresh your mind of what you need to talk about next you'll be reading word for word

Here's another source of some Apple facts, if you ever need to do a longer paper or a re-write.

As I said before, the latout is a requirement that goes in line with what an "Argumentative Essay" should look like.

    4 paragraphs

    1st-State controversey, stance, reason.

2nd-3 reasons as to why my position is correct.

3rd-State oppositional opinions and "shoot them down."

4th-conclusion and tie back to topic sentinces.

    what?

If I wrote an essay as wordy and complex as that with huge compond sentences and then went up to read it as a speech my teacher would smack me across the head and kick me out of class.

    guess its different elsewhere

It sounds like your teacher was attempting to teach you the basics of the rhetorical stance, but your discourse seems a bit pedantic. Almost from the start, you alienated your audience (PC users, mostly) and it seems to have went down hill from there.

It's not bad at all, but it does not even convince me.. and I'm already a Mac user!

I don't want spew remarks on how you could have improved it.. but next time, remember your audience.. Sounds like you're in High School, so think about stuff that would be convincing to HS students. They don't care about half the "facts" you told them.

May I ask what grade/class this was for? English 10?

I earned one of my degrees in Literary Theory with a minor in rhetoric, so I do know what I'm talking about.

    From that paper:

    [quote]

The architectural firm that designed Bill Gates' $50 million residence,

Bohlin Cywinski Jackson in Seattle, is a Mac shop, and Bill bought his mom a

new iMac, because he said it was too hard for her to understand computing and

the Mac is so much easier for a novice to use. Gates says his mom doesn,t

bother him so much with computing questions now.

The high-tech electronics inside Gates' mansion are Windows-based. The first

evening at home, his drop-from-the-ceiling bigscreen TV would not shut off --

Gates had to throw a blanket over it to get to sleep.

    (Barbara Walters 20/20 interview)

Bill Gates uses Macintoshes on his desk at Microsoft headquarters.

Bill Gates couldn,t get Windows 95 to boot up at its official launch

celebration. He threw a tirade then asked jokingly if anyone had a Mac.

I have long suspected this: Bill isn´t evil. I think he truly wanted to run Apple and be a visionary instead of being a buisnessman just like Jobs propably wanted to be Bill and decide the computer experience of 90% of the population. Now I think jobs is satisfied as long as he has enough customers to be able to deliver hard- and software that occational wows people. And Bill has left the bridge (and rude buisness methodes) of SS MicroSoft to hand out billions to others who need them more than himself.

By the way, Macintosh, I forgot to ask: how did it go? Did you present yet?

I know everyone here has picked it apart (seems like AI people love to criticize, which suggests something about their own insecurity -- but let's not go there :-) ), but really some blame must go to the teacher. A persuasive speech and an essay should NOT be written the same way! I can not believe you simply got in front of the class and read an essay... there are so many reasons why this is wrong. You know the saying: the medium is the message.
