As someone who works in the credit card industry, I think this announcement will indeed be historic in terms of payment processing and have a large impact on the industry. While understand it will likely have a negative impact on my livelihood, I am excited to see the industry's future, which will absolutely be changed tomorrow by Apple.
This seems more plausible given the leaks we've gotten but last year no one knew about 64bit iPhones and iPads.

Only the cellular iPads. It's not known by most users, but your cellular iPad actually has a phone-number assigned to it. (If it's got a cellular data package activated.) ... Its software doesn't allow it to be used as a phone, but it has the right chips in it... so that it can access the cellular data network.
I have to think that there is something even more than what we've been speculating.
A big iPhone, a watch, a payments system are all incredibly cool... but historic?

These days, it's especially difficult for a company like Apple (especially Apple) to come out with any kind of significant product announcement from left field without anyone having any inkling about it, and without even a rumor being created or published. Odds are whatever they are going to announce, we've at least heard vague rumors about them already (payment system, home automation, iWatch, etc). Which won't make them any less significant or historic.
“Historic” pits it against the introduction of the Macintosh, iMac, and iPhone.
And there is absolutely no way it could so much as match any of them.
Just like, according to you, there was absolutely no way they would call the iPhone released in 2012 the "iPhone 5"? I think you speak too often in absolutes.
Eddy Cue seems to think that they can top the initial iPhone announcement. I have my doubts about that too, but since he knows whatever it is he's talking about, and I don't, I'll have to be less absolutely certain than you are.

Here's one to ponder. Want to explore the glaciers of New Zealand while sitting in your den in New Mexico? Take command and control of a drone using your brain, and get stereo images and sound back directly to your primary visual and auditory cortices.

Steve Jobs' RDF has morphed into the parappledox, the less they say the more berserk the buildup gets. Something that is different from the last new "category" intro, if that's what's happening tomorrow, is Apples audience has grown massively over recent years. The level of interest around the planet in where Apple moves the tech compass next, is, at the very least, "socially" historic regardless of what they actually announce.
I have a thought, and please do not pillory me on this, but think for a second. One of the confirmed features of iOS 8 is VoLTE support. You have to know that Apple is pissed that their devices and users are being hamstrung by the current dominant cell carriers, what with capricious and arbitrary data caps. Just suppose that Apple where ready to turn the cell industry on its head. Maybe they are ready to launch their own service to compete with AT&T and Verizon. Can you just imagine the scramble in those board rooms?

They can’t. They are required by law to allow ANY phone on their network. That’s why they didn’t do it back in aught six. No garbage phones on Apple networks.
