It says "Requires iPhone 5 or later."

I don't have an iPhone, and would like the watch, and so this means it has to "come with a data plan" for those of us without phones.

Unless that's just in reference to something specific?

Apple Watch will require an iPhone to get all of the functionality. Also it does not work with Android. The data plan is for the iPhone.

    That’s what Apple said.

Are you sure? I'm seeing functionality that doesn't require an iPhone be tethered to it.
Doesn’t matter. An iPhone implies a data plan.

In their iWatch videos they state that an iPhone will allow it to grab GPS and WiFi data. I didn't hear them mention Cellular or a data plan once.

Yes and no. He can send you his heartbeat, but you can't manipulate it from your iPhone. Apple were probably concerned about people's hearts inadvertently leaping into their mouths.

    Haha...although I disagree I like your description. ;-)

I actually love the "measles"! It looks great. I love that you scroll across it and the cluster moves around. It just seems natural, and especially so for a tiny screen. I can't imagine a grid or a list view on a watch face - yuck.

As for the dial (I think it's clearly a dial)... what I love about this is that it calls on very traditional, elegantly-machined watches while adding an ultra-modern, high-tech twist. I think that's kind of ironically cool. It's fun. :-)

No idea on what functionality is unavailable without an iPhone - e.g., whether an app would still run in a reduced mode.  Anything that requires GPS positioning and connectivity to the net will be at a minimum "hobbled".

That could very well be, but we’ll have to see.

Right, but, ownership of an activated iPhone requires a data plan because it’s an iPhone. Since the ?Watch requires an iPhone for use, the transitive property of equality says it requires a data plan.

TS is right. Apple explicitly said you need an iPhone to use the Watch. My picture wasn't frozen for that bit.

I guarantee you that you don't need an iPhone to be tethered to it via BT for the pedometer, clock and other apps to function. it's not like it shuts off if they get disconnected.

    1) But the data plan is already associated with the iPhone so saying it needs a data plan is disingenuous. As previously stated you can run the iWatch without every getting data to it from a cellular network via an iPhone.

    2) You don't have to have a data plan with an unlocked iPhone.

    3) Don't use have an iPhone without a data plan?

Implying it needs its own is disingenuous. I see what you’re saying now.

Oh, right. Wait, what? Oh, I guess if you don’t use one of the Big Four.

Well, without a plan plan, too; somewhat out of the loop here. <img class=" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

Yes, because that was such a flop for Apple.

    Math is hard.

Obviously Math is hard because your cell phone bill would be $25 less per month (on a data share plan) if you bought the phone at full retail.

You are paying $199 plus $25 a month for the phone. So nope. Not twice the price.

Just incase the math is too hard I will break it down for you.

$217 for the phone with tax (give or take a buck) $25 a month for 24 months is $600

    So: $217 + $600 is ?  anyone? anyone?

    $817

    1. depends where you live. Here in France, you can buy any iPhone without even having to choose a carrier (so let alone any plan). That’s why so many people came from all over Europe when the iPhone 4 was introduced so long ago.

    3. I have an iPhone 4 and no data plan. I don’t feel particularly hillbilly or crippled.

BTW, iPhone 6 (unsubsidized) € 709. iPhone 6+ € 809. That's the 16 MB versions. Add an incremental € 100 for each bump in flash capacity. Considering that the Eurozone economy is more or less flatlining, I call that either mockery or folly.

That's about the same as last year. iPhones are designed to be subsidised.

I can’t remember how much I’d paid for my iPhone 4 but it wasn’t that expensive. Maybe € 450 to 500. But that was four years ago.

“designed” to be subsidized. I'd say “priced” to be subsidized ;)

Under what definition? When the iPhone was only available unsubsidized, so many people paid MORE for the big model that Apple discontinued the 4 GB iPhone the fastest of any product they have ever sold.

Makes me really happy to have one, in fact.
