Yikes... They'd better hope Google's interested. Google is undoubtedly scrambling to slap together a solution that mirrors Apple's. When that happens, we'll eventually be looking at 2 little buttons at the bottom of every digital shopping cart that will say "apple pay" and "android pay". When that happens... Square who?

It's actually a shame. I've always been impressed by Square. But I think it'll take an acquisition at this point for them to stay in the race.
#1) Square is sort of doing a different thing. They're accepting payments and Apple is making payments. I think there's room for both systems, especially if Square makes a really nice looking NFC register that becomes popular.
#2) Google is likely thankful for the news. Google put all of their weight behind NFC (remember, bump phones to share a playlist?) and it was almost a dead technology because Apple wouldn't adopt it. But now that Apple is in the game, it will almost force retailers to support NFC, which Google will be happy about since it already has a NFC payment system that will suddenly be usable in more places.

I don't think Google's "give me all your data" payment method is compatible with Apple's token (and completely private) payment system. Apple took all the fun out of what Google wanted to do.

Offer, no offer, still bankrupt in the next 12-18 months. Whether from Apple and/or Google this solution is going to get consumed by the big players.

You can add Amazon and FaceBook to that scenario (as well as two more little buttons). Someone' gonna pay big bucks for Square. Tech Bubble 2.0 is here; bust is around the corner.

Oh, I forgot…add Samsung in there, too…jest for the heck of it.

Remember when Jerry Yang was so roundly criticized for rebuffing MSFT's buyout offer?

Also, Dropbox is still in business.

    Great going, guys.

Square might have done Apple a HUGE favor by rejecting Apple's offer. Think about what Apple does not have to deal with now...

Apple does not have to deal with hardware, software nor personnel integration issues. No one at Square will lose their jobs due to the company being purchased by Apple. Apple is still digesting the Beats purchase, taking on Square right now might too much for the company to handle.

Apple does not have to deal with delays getting regulatory approval from the US, European and Chinese governments. This means Apple can move forward faster with its vision for mobile payments.

Apple does not have to deal with any headaches between Square and its investors and its customers.

Apple does not have to worry about immediately supporting Android payments. Even though Google Wallet has been around for three (?) years, Wall Street has always looked at Apple to legitimize mobile payments for the masses. Seeing how Apple's Eddie Cue has brought Apple Pay together, there is no doubt in my mind that Apple does not need Square. (Now we know why Eddie Cue stepped back from iTunes Radio... to focus on Apple Pay!)

There are many issues Square saved Apple from having to deal with.

I wish Square well and look forward to seeing Apple compete with Square starting in October 2014!

Eh, I guess… I don’t see them integrating hardware, anyway.

Right; they’ll just lose their jobs the old fashioned way: due to the company NOT being purchased by Apple. <img class=" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

Nor will they ever, at any time, for any reason.

The question becomes whether those “benefits” outweigh the benefits of purchase.

So your point is that it's a slow decline to irrelevancy. Gotcha.

Oh yeah. lol. Woops. But no, I think there's something particularly convenient and insuring about a system-specific payment solution that works Solely on your Own device. With your Own fingerprint. And in Apple's case, one that has its own onboard security measures built in to both the software And hardware. This is where I see Android playing catch up in the future. And this is where I see 3rd party payment solutions like paypal and square failing so long as those hardware security measures remain restricted to them.

For retailers that tend to use Square, ApplePay is not available until the processors build out that option and get real about contact less payment, and the pace of advancement by the processing industry is glacial at best.

Square may find a huge market in becoming a gateway to ApplePay for its customer base.

Or be the object of a bidding war. The credit card processors don't have the word innovate in their vocabulary, require multiple attempts to copy, and measure implement in units of years.

This is why Square will be fine. Square has 2 primary things, it has a POS system for accepting payments, and has a mag stripe reader for processing card swipes. It's not really directly competing with Apple's ApplePay. Square will undoubtedly integrate ApplePay into their POS solution once iPads ship with an NFC chip, or they will update their mag swipe reader with NFC. Either way it's something that will work alongside ApplePay, as not everyone will be using iPhones and ApplePay so small shops that use Square will still be wanting to process actual credit cards.

Because the disclaimer is as much proof as the rumor.

In the first place, the whole thing isn't true - just a rumour.

Second, everyone said the same thing about Dropbox, when they declined to be bought out by Steve Jobs. He told them it was the biggest mistake they'll ever make, and that they'll be bankrupt soon. Well, guess what happened? Dropbox is doing VERY well, and Apple's Cloud services are full of problems. Yeah, they were morons too.
