PayPal questions Apple Pay security in new ad, uses iCloud celebrity photo debacle as ammunition

The Paypal ad just goes to show that Paypal is running scared and they should be. I have been a Paypal user since the early days of its' existence but from this point forward I will be using ?Pay whenever and wherever I can. ?Pay just seems to be a more secure and better thought out solution. On a few occasions I had to deal with Paypal's customer service which was a chore in itself as it was frustrating, time consuming and difficult.

Ideally I would love to see Paypal just work with ?Pay.

"Nobody can dispute Apple's strong track record, but payments is a difficult area. It's much more difficult to do payments than to keep a live stream working!"

Hey douchebag, you know what's more difficult than "doing payments"? Reinventing the personal computer, the desktop GUI, modern mp3 players, digital downloads, smartphones, tablets, laptops, mobile appstore, the first reliable mobile biometric solution, as well as a million other hardware and software innovations. There's just a TINY chance that Apple will also be able to figure out payments. Oh wait, they did already, and have been putting the puzzle pieces together for the past few years (Touch ID, Passbook, NFC, credit card, bank, and retailer agreements), and you're already fucked.

But yeah, focus on a livestream. Whatever helps you sleep at night, Paypal. By this time next year, hundreds of millions of people will be using Apple Pay, and demanding to use it wherever it's not available. It will be like an avalanche, and those retailers that don't support it will start doing so damn quick.

PayPal wants to fight dirty? I can too. Just cancelled my 8 year relationship with them.

If you look at Bluetooth LE and iBeacons, you realize that the iPhone is one as well. It can transmit and also receive. What if the same is true with ApplePay. Why couldn't the iPhone6 or Apple Watch also be a NFC Terminal and accept ApplePay Payments, or any NFC Payments at some point in the future?  This would put NFC Terminals in a huge percentage of hands. It puts them Squarely in Square and Paypal's target zone. It also solves a problem that those companies have in 2015. How will they (Paypal, Square, etc)  be able to allow their customers to accept payments on Mobile Devices in 2015 and meet the new guidelines?

I guarantee you that Apple has already thought of this, and it is already on the roadmap. The technology is there, and it makes too much sense. I suspect they will announce it within 12 months, enough time to get people used to Apple Pay and comfortable with it. Imagine securely paying anyone next to you (with an iPhone) by credit card with a single tap of touchID. Mark by word, within a couple years, NOT having an iPhone is going to be a massive inconvenience, and you will also inconvenience others.

I just closed my account too, with a strongly worded, explicit explanation of why.

Hmm, now I hope the ad wasn't a hoax...

EDIT: Okay, it's real. If the ad wasn't enough to make you close your account, the CEO's "leadership" of his employees might make you want to:

A few years back someone hacked my PayPal account and it resulted in my bank checking account as well as a credit card being shut down for awhile. It took PayPal about a week to figure it out before things went back to normal. SO, guess what PAYnotsoPAL, you too can be hacked!

This is pure FUD from PayPal. Their reign of terror is coming to an end.

    Consumer ... for the win.

PayPal: a middleman payment source. a "secure" way for scammers to steal your money, leagally.

what I truly hate about paypal, is the fact that they do not believe the seller of a product. ie: I sold an item on eBay with free shipping, insurance, and delivery confirmation. The person received the item, signed for it, and then claimed they never received it. PayPal, instead of seeing the irrefutable proof that not alone that they did, but they also signed for it, was not good enough and refunded the buyer his money and penalized me.

PayPal thank you for making your demise, eminent.

This is the first I've ever heard of GMail being targeted.  Do you have a source that talks more in depth about it?

The trouble with this kind of ad is that it falls apart when you consider that Paypal is just as susceptible to phishing etc.

Considering how badly they got hacked, and how long it took them to report that they'd been hacked, this takes a lot of balls.

I'm not seeing where it mentions the relation to the celebrity nude selfie leak like the poster suggested.

Well, it is good news. That means that Apple pay is the biggest threat to Paypal since Paypal and Apple pay has great advantages which makes them worried. For this reason they started to compare and use this pathetic ad which only makes some Apple customers to run away from them. Now I am really excited to use Apple pay.

Ya cuz PayPal hasn't had numerous security issues.

    Let's just get thi straight.

Some of the celebrities who were "hacked" had Android phones which means that they weren't iCloud accounts and Apple checked their iCloud servers and there was no exploit. We don't know for sure but we do know that not all of them had iOS devices. PayPal is just worried because they'll lose online business.

I am not even sure how they compete. Who uses PayPal at all beyond places like Ebay or online? Yeah I know they have a card they issue and also a mobile card reader you can plug into your iPhone headphone port, but I doubt that is a big part of their business. And I don't remember them attacking Square when they entered those markets.

Does Apple Pay even have an ability to handle online transactions yet?
