Fun things to do with very old Macs

I've got 1 128K Mac, 2 SE Macs and 1 Mac Plus.

I wanted to turn 1 into an aquarium, make another one a clock (with a full screen digital display running through the OS), but I'm not sure what to do with the other ones.

They're just collecting dust right now. Anyone have any fun ideas?

You could make a bigger clock . Put the hour on one Mac, the minutes on another and am/pm on the third.

Or... make a bigger aquarium. Connect-up three of the Macs with see-through, acrylic tubes. They'd be networked! A LAF (Local Area Fishwork).

Please don't use working Macs for fish tanks. Seriously I know people who would pay cash for those just to keep them and use them.

    who would want one?

I don't get it, what can you get done on any of those?

I like the clock idea the best, that would be totally pimp

I have Mac 512k, and it still works well. It has MacWrite, MacPaint, and a few other apps, and an Apple ImageWriter I. And it actually prints!

To answer your question, Wrong Robot, old Macs are fun to play with and to show off to people. And they actually do stuff.

Yes, they all work. I'm not looking to get rid of them. Thats why I wanted "fun things" to do with them. Giving them to you is not fun for me

The "LAF" idea sounds great! Although only my techie friends would really get the "networked" part. hah

I also have 2 LCIIs and an Apple IIc. Though I'm not quite sure what I can do with those.

...old Macs are like old friends that you grew-up with. When I see them turn into aquariums, makes me wonder how are they going to be remembered by their owners.

There is nothing like firing-up an old Mac. The sound brings a lot of memories.

Whoa Whoa Whoa.....you bid 500 bucks for 128k Mac??? ooooook...maybe I'll change my mind about "selling" it to you. I still won't "give" it to you

    Seriously though, I think I'd sell you my 128k for 500 bucks in a New York minute <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

If you happen to be a college student that goes to a college in a location that gets hot, but not quite hot enough to permit air conditioning, consider this plan.

Completely gut the mac and buy a medium sized fan and a small fan. (I would take one of the ducted Honeywell models. sub $30 at Walmart) Also locate a compressor for a big freezer, new or used. With a few parts from a local hardware store (piping, etc) route the freon piping into coils inside the fan ducting via the bottom/base of the fan. (i.e. the fan permanently rests on the top of the computer.) Use the small fan to blow the heat off of teh compressor and out the back of the computer. Make sure to direct it though a duct, perhaps a collapsable round one such as those you can find at hardware stores. It's also wise to build a window seal, but that varies from window to window.

Print out a Mac OS smiley face and put it where the monitor should be. Instant, concealable air conditioning. The fire-inspectors will never guess. Of course, if it's really cold in your room I'm sure some suspicion would arise.

I was going to build a device like this, but my room this year is in the shade, so it's not necessary.
