UM, click Photos, then at the bottom click the Photos icon instead of Albums. You should see Moments in black lettering at top. That's your camera Roll, sizes of thumbnails are nearly the same (very slight smaller), but it adds the dates as headers. So if you took a pic on Monday it would have Monday then that pic or pics you did that day. then as you scroll up it will go back in history like your Camera Roll. Just separated by date groupings.

Explain to me how what you said makes any sense. If someone can't find their picture in a chronologically organized "Collections" view how were they finding those same pictures in the old chronologically organized "Camera Roll" listing?
Ok, so this is why this is a problem in my workflow and probably others as well. I don't always sync my iPhone photos to iPhoto on my mac right away, sometimes it may be a month or two between syncs. After I do so, I usually don't let iPhoto delete them off the phone because I like to make sure that they are backed up before doing so.
So now, when I want to permanently delete them off the phone (to free up space), how do I now find my photos that were actually taken with the phone? I create "favorites" albums (of pictures taken with many sources) to sync back only the best photos to my phone, but now these are commingled with my photos actually taken with the phone. There is now no way to separate them out so I can delete them. I would have to find each one in these larger collections and cherry pick them out. WHAT A PAIN!!!
Hopefully this will be addressed soon. I certainly hope that Apple doesn't kill my photo workflow like they did my Movie workflow with the latest version of iMovie. I am forced to use the old version because of the functionality that they removed and the new format in which they store your stuff.
I am trying, really trying, to be patient with this, but between the bizarre way that old photos are cached in purgatory (try walking your 70 y/o parent through this) and the fact that you can not even move a folder higher up that you reference frequently, that lack of user autonomy with this is really bizarre. I'm really concerned that iPhoto is going to be an even bigger cluster### when the new OS rolls out.
If anyone at Apple is reading about this, I hope they consider bringing back the camera roll as a start. Being able to better organzie folders, and also have the option to not have slo-mo, pano, video, etc all stuck in separate folders would be great as well. My photos list of folders is ridiculous. They may as well start sorting Square format, B and W and color into their own folders for all the logic this has behind it.
These are not folders. We all need to stop thinking in these old paradigms. These are CLASSIFICATIONS based on the meta data of the images. Also, this is in preparation for the storage of ALL of your photos in iCloud. This was one of the major points in replacing iPhoto with Photos on the Mac OSX. Photos will be consistent across all the devices and all of your photos will be available across all of the devices. Some people will complain about the change. They always do. iOS 8 and Yosemite are going to be huge changes for all of us to get used too. I will have to purchase a new iPad this year as well as a new MacBook Pro, just so I can make use of all the features like Continuity and Handoff.
Remember also that we are getting most of these features for free or little cost. On any other platform, we would either pay through the nose or pay with our identity and personal information.
Personally, I am ok with the changes to the Photos app and how it works.. The organization makes more sense when you think about it objectively. It's unfortunate that we have all gotten so set in our ways here that this is somehow a major issue. It was an organizational change that should have happened before.
And you create "Albums" which are subsets of your library and with it organized this way, you are not then having to create copies of those images in each album. So it also saves storage space this way.

When Yosemite rolls out and iPhot and Aperture go away, does anyone know what 'Events' will now look like? I'm tempted to roll out Yosemite on another computer to see what impact it has before installing it where my master images are.
I'm not usually a complainer. And always give Apple the benefit of the doubt when it comes to changes. But the awhile ago they added/changed the Podcast app. And it was terrible. I'd either have duplicate podcasts that I would delete and would come back again or I'd have the podcast on my iMac and they wouldn't sync to my iPhone. I go out on a run looking fwd to a specific podcast to listen and it wouldn't be there.
I'm sure I was not setting it up correctly and part of it is have an iP4s but still have the original white intel iMac stuck on Snow Leopard, i.e., no iCloud and no ML/Mavericks.
But I have to say, this latest update really screwed my playlists, which did not make it and I can't sync them although they show in iTunes. Now I can't sync or backup my iPhone with iTunes. Not sure what the problem is. This is the first time it's happened in all my other Apple updates.
P.S. Really like the Auto-complete feature on the typing!
P.S.S. I think 99% of my problems will be solved when I get a new iMac with Yosemite. Can't wait!

Anyone whining about getting something for free is just, I don't know.. The album was free and it was not downloaded to your device unless you had it set to download music automatically. I do have that setting and I still had to go and download it manually. If you don't want it, then delete it.. How hard is that?

Um, all right in front of me in reasonably sized miniatures, latest last, no dividers by date or place? (Although all of the new stuff is fine as another alternative.
My 2014 section consists of hundreds of miniatures that look like one of those abstract composites of Abraham Lincoln, made up of miniscule pictures of the Civil War.
On the iPad, you can kinda see what a picture is. On iPhone? Impossible. Absolutely indiscernible.
Then clicking on the year opens it up into 'places' sorting. And again, I don't necessarily know where a given picture was taken.
Because the new method mixes synced photos with phone-generated ones. My old Camera Roll had around 200 photos, and I had about 3,000 synced photos. I can navigate the synced photos via Albums and Events, but to find a photo I took > 30 days ago, I have to dig through 3,200 photos.
Its not so much that looking at pictures <30 days old will be a problem... that's what 'recent' is for.

But you've nailed it with shuffling all pictures from camera roll and albums into one big stew that's the problem.

No, you are seeing all photos on your camera, not just ones taken WITH your camera. THAT's the problem.
The best suggestion I've seen in this thread is a default smart folder of 'Photos Taken on this Device'.
Ends up being the same thing, and its there to use or not.
It’s good, but it’s a solution to a problem that didn’t need to exist. Just leave the camera roll. We understand the concept of a camera roll, both skeuomorphically and otherwise.

"Today" is not that easy a concept to grasp....
