    Here's some thoughts.

    Don't drop your phone.

Okay, that was just one thought.

It’s not for you to decide. Either pay to fix it, pay full price for a new one, or enjoy your broken device. What right do you have to dictate how much Apple makes on repairs? If it costs too much, people will stop buying the phone. THEY’RE NOT STOPPING.
True, but I'd hate for Apple to get all tight on us like everybody else. Apple's generosity when it comes to replacing broken or damaged gear has always been impressive. In the past people have been awed by this amazing service. Apple makes so much money it just seems unnecessary to start squeezing the customers.

what a bunch of crybabies. maybe people will start to take better care of their phones. i had a 4 and now have a 4s with a protective film on the screen + mophie case. still good as new.

i'm hoping to upgrade soon, but i'm dumbfounded as to why people have cracked screens. and, because the 4s is out of warranty, it cost me $79 for a new battery. not a bad deal considering what i've used the phone for.

The price in the headline doesn't match the price in the figure or article ($399 vs. $329).

If you didn't buy AppleCare and broke your screen twice, that's correct, it would cost you $218. But, um, who plans for this? Butterfingers McGee? Far better to spend (by your math) $40 and be covered for any OTHER damage if you're that prone to having accidents. I don't mean to brag, but I'm on my third iPhone (original, iPhone 4, iPhone 5s) with nary a scratch amongst the lot. And only a cheap silicon case for them.

Perhaps it's because I treat them like they cost $500 bucks. Or just lucky maybe.

Just be careful with the "whatever you do..." line on the Internet. I respect opinions but that steps too close to the "this is fact" side of the fence.

Mpantones advice regarding using a credit card instead of a debit card to purchase the iPhone was flawless and incontrovertible.

I don't understand your objection to it?

He clearly prefaced his advice with "IF you can afford to purchase it with a debut card" which should wean out any objection that any one might have otherwise had.

I think you misread his post. I may have had trouble interpreting it but it sounded like he said "Whatever you do, don't buy expensive electronics with debit cards. There are few benefits to using a debit card. If you can afford something on a debit card, you can afford it on credit card; just pay the latter off in full and carry no balance."
History has shown us that debt does us no good. I'm glad that appleinsider welcomes smart people who are the minority but 52% of Americans do NOT pay off a credit card immediately after a purchase. Welcomes risk. Sorry to hijack the post.

There was nothing wrong with his advice. His advice is obviously not meant for people who don't know how to manage their finances and who stupidly go out and buy things that they can not afford.

All he was saying that if somebody has the money to buy something on a debit card, it would be better to buy it using a credit card and paying off the amount in full.

I'm not sure about that. I paid for AppleCare when I bought my iPhone 4s nearly 3 years ago and never needed to use it once. So was it worth it? It certainly gave me peace of mind for the 1st 2 years. I suppose the question is will I buy it for the iPhone 6 I plan to buy in the next month or so - i don't know!

Interesting to see how this forum has quiclkly turned into a lecture about using credit cards from people who are both perfect *and* odor free.

Interesting that a screen replacement is only $109. However, if you spend $99 for AppleCare, you still have to pay $79 for a deductible for accidental damage Twice.

So, if you didn't buy AppleCare and broke your screen twice, it would cost you $218.  If you bought AppleCare, your total repair cost would be $257. Total cost is MORE.  Sure, AppleCare covers other damage as well, but broken screens are the most common scenario.

Does the out of warranty price include labor? If not then it's significantly more and therefore AppleCare is cheaper.

Yes. The price listed is the price you pay (plus tax).

We've had the original iPhone, two 3Gs, two 4, one 5 and now two 6 in our household. The 5 needed a new screen. $50 from Amazon.

Never bought AppleCare, never will. Saved 8x AppleCare so far.

Given that the modal case covers every beautiful feature of the phone except the screen, I sure wish we could do without.

You should have lost enough battery life in 2 years to warrant a free swap. Applecare customers have no hassle when taking their phone in from my experience.

My friend dropped and shattered his 5. When he took it in he told them he had bad battery life but dropping it was the last straw. They tested the battery first and said it needed to be replaced. Then replaced the phone without charging the deductible. Which his was still $49 under the old price.

I approve of this new rate hike.

I believe in personal responsibility. I also believe that people must be prepared to deal with the consequences of the choices that they make.

    Me, too.

I've never got AppleCare for iDevices, as they are such reliable computers. I do for Macs, as the RAM is less reliable, not to mention the hard drive.
