Very good numbers. I think the reason it wasn't so much higher than the 9 million from last year is that it's only possible to move so many devices through a store. While many people are just cash & carry, there are also a lot of people doing upgrades. These take time to process especially for people renewing contracts.

I bet that Apple sells another 10 million before the month is out as demand is still high. Which is going to make their earnings call next month very interesting. Not only for the results this quarter, but for the guidance they offer next quarter.

"China is include, it is call black market, It appears that a significant number of the 10M are making their way into China, at 2 to 3x the selling price, you got any friends in China who wish to buy an iPhone 6"

    Define "significant".

Given the manual distribution channel that consists of individuals buying the iphone and then reselling them to either an end user or middleman, this process would not amount to more than a rounding error on the 10 million units sold over the weekend.

So clearly according to him there are supply constraints. And if that's the case how would China have helped? When you only have so many phones available for sale it doesn't matter how many countries are included in the launch. Perhaps it's a good thing China didn't launch right away.

I doubt that Apple sold off what supply of iPhones they reserved for China. They couldn't have sold all their supply of iPhones they made because they are going to be sold in another 20 countries this Friday. And China could come on line any day. I would hate to think that Apple supply of iPhones went down to zero over the launch weekend and they must now rely on daily output at Foxconn to stock up for this Friday, restock shelves in countries that started selling iPhones last Friday, ship out preorders and maybe have to start selling in China any day now. (Not to mention getting the inventory channel fully stock for the Xmas quarter.) I think by  "supply" Tim Cook means the supply that was allotted to those countries for the launch weekend, not all the iPhones they made up to launch day (plus pre order). So if Apple were able to sell in China, maybe another million or two iPhones would have been sold because Apple had already allotted iPhones for them and that allotment is still sitting there waiting for day they can  go on sale.

This was a result of Apple figuring out how to tap into a new market. The deceased. <img class=" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

George Washington and Mark Twain also posted how they love the new iPhone 6. It is much better than their old iPhone 5. They both bought every phone in the store.

It would be great if we could find out how the 5S sells in this quarter.

If Apple puts a 6C at the bottom of the lineup next year then that means the 4" phone is toast.
Even more than the 5c vs. the 5s, I would love to know how many 6 Pluses sold compared to the 6. But Alas, Apple doesn't provide that information. I'd especially like to know how many previous iPhone users chose the 6 Plus (I shudder to think of large numbers of Apple users opting for the phablet).

But I don't know why the 6C would ever be the free phone. I expect the 5s to be transplanted into the plastic case and survive another year. Frankly the 6 does not offer that much over the 5s. The biggest selling points seem to be better camera, NFC and bigger screen. Processor speed is not a major factor for most users. So, if they drop the 6c into the free phone spot, there won't be a lot of areas for them to differentiate the free phone from the 6s.

The 4" phone helps differentiate the model styles, just as the plastic case of the 5c does. The 4" will live on, and since the screen is not only cheaper, but if they position it as the middle tier and free phone, it can keep most of the new features of the top line phones limited only by what the case will accommodate, and still justify the price reduction. So eventually you have $100, $200, $300, all with similar features, but differentiated by screen size. Then the 4" screen will get bumped down to a plastic shell, as the top three are upgraded every year. I think Apple has already given us a hint at this kind of marketing with the 5c -- customers no longer have a choice of this years model, last years model and the two-year old model: they now can choose between three models of the current phone, each with slightly different features (like the 6 & 6 plus), and then a new entry level model which is not like any of the previously offered models.

I have to wonder what Samsung will do next to attract customers back ...

China is barely larger than Rhode Island. I was looking at a map earlier and the entire country of China measured only 5 inches across.

Nope, it's organized because they are handing their phones off to a few people, who collects them and stuffs them in bags. They don't even try to hide their organized scalping, as they do it in broad daylight, for all to see.

Launch weekend is always about how many phones Apple can produce. China or not doesn't matter. Apple will sell every last one they can make. If China is missing, its allotment goes to other launch countries so the number of units sold is the same either way.

Sure makes it difficult to guess how the lineup will look next year.

Last year it was quite easy to see that the 5C would drop to the bottom with the 5S in the middle and then a larger phone at the top (I really didn't expect Apple to put 2 large phones at the top).

Next year gets more difficult because Apple would face the same problem as last year if it put plastic versions of the 6 and 6+ in the middle... but even more problems if Apple put the 6 and 6+ in the middle.

Does the 5S drop to the bottom?

The new phones have just come out and I'm already wondering how Apple will solve next year's logistics problems.  lol

You know who I have a problem with?  Not with scalpers.  But with US Citizens that are lazy and dont work.  Lazy US Citizens that cause all of our taxes to go up because we have to support them.  Look at the stats.  See how many Chinese US citizens are unemployeed....

Maybe you hear about Chinese scalpers being mentioned more than others, because some of the lines are 75% Chinese.

As for your second paragraph, I agree with you about US citizens who do not work,  so we are probably politically aligned on that particular topic. If it were up to me, welfare in this country would be decreased by 90%.

We only have FACTS to go buy.

Mr Cook himself stated that the SELL THROUGH was FAR LARGER this year than last year.  Case closed.

You'all small phone extremist just need to get with the times.  Things change.

    Hahahahahaha

    I never ever said I wanted a 4" phone.

Again... you don't read. You just assume.

I am wondering how well a premium 4" phone would sell. Hell... you don't even know yet how well the 5C and 5S will sell in this quarter and you're already spouting off.

Hahahahaha... you are a funny funny guy.

Oh... and, by the way, I don't think the sell through for the 6 or 6+ was as great this year as the 5S last year. So much for that theory...

I would not be surprised if Apple and China had an agreement that China would use its authority to prevent Apple from offering the 6s in China while allowing Apple to claim China as a preferred country knowing full well that supply would be constrained. If demand had been weaker, then China would have opened the channel to Apple sooner. This way everybody wins.

You mean could have sold more in 1 day? The point is the 3-day weekend sales and fixed inventory meaning how faster they run out of inventory, not how many they could have sold.

I was at an Apple Store in Columbus Ohio. Got my reservation for my phone by getting there at 5am. iPhone 6+ sold out by 7am. I left the line around 8:30 after securing my reservation for my phone. I came back at 4:20 and 2 gals were coming across the parking lot with phone bags in their hands. I was surprised they still had inventory. When the girls got closer I recognized them from the line at 5am. They were behind me by about 15 people. They told me that they were just leaving. So it took them from 5 am to 4:20pm to get through the line. I counted the people in line when I arrived early and there were about 200 people ahead of me. Now they did have 2 lines that were feeding into the store. One for people like me and one for preorder in store pickup. So stock was still available because the checkout process was painfully slow. When I came back at 4:20 there were about 50 people ahead of me. It took 4 hours to get in the door.

My whole point is that they could have sold many, many more phones if they could have sped up the checkout process. It was painful. But the Apple Store employees were on point and energetic and did a fantastic job working to make each customer feel special.
