Goodbye, Camera Roll: Where to find your photos in iOS 8

The Camera Roll does not show "every photo you've ever taken", as the article says.

The point of the Camera Roll, at least for me, was to show every photo and movie that I've taken with my iPhone. This excludes photos synced from my Mac.

Now there is no way for me to quickly scroll through the photos I took with my iPhone because they're lumped together with my photo albums synced from iPhoto on my mac. Also, I can no longer sort my albums so the ones I need more are at the top.

Another case of Apple not being aware of how people are actually using their products. I'm a huge Apple fan by the way ;)

Funny, I deleted all photos from the "roll" as soon as they were uploaded to Aperture (iPhoto). Using it as a temporary storage of immediate shots only, so Apple was quite aware of how I've used the "roll" for years: taking the offered "delete" option after upload as logical. That said customization is always good, perhaps they'll add some back or it's hidden somewhere (haven't read a manual yet).

I guess it's a good thing you deleted items from the camera roll while you were still able to know which photos were taken on your phone and which were synced with iPhoto or Aperture, and which were shared from Photo Stream.

Because the new method mixes synced photos with phone-generated ones. My old Camera Roll had around 200 photos, and I had about 3,000 synced photos. I can navigate the synced photos via Albums and Events, but to find a photo I took > 30 days ago, I have to dig through 3,200 photos.

This brings up an important point.  It really seems that Apple does not test their apps with large data sets.  Just because the new Photos app looks fine with 1 picture from the camera, 1 picture from iPhoto, and 1 picture from Photo Stream, do we just assume that it will work fine with 5000 pictures from all these different sources combined?

Another example is the lack of any auto-arrange options (by name, date, priority) in Reminders for iOS.  When you have a list with just 2 items, why would anyone need to sort?  So it must be the same with a list that contains 100 items?

The most obvious example of all is scrolling.  It looks so cool to flick your finger on the screen to scroll through a 2 sentence email or a 2 page document.  So it should be no problem doing the same thing with something that spans dozens of pages, or even a single page that is magnified?   Worse yet, when you start scrolling, a transparent scrollbar appears but you can't actually drag the thing.

What you said. I'd really like to be able to be able to navigate with the scrollbar.

As I am presently using iOS7 on an iPhone 4, and therefore experience lag and delay with almost every operation, I wonder if a combination of current hardware and software has enough RAM to cache an entire long file or "directory" so that it even CAN be scrolled without flicking, which (I'm guessing) allows the OS to keep buffering little bits at a time? Trying to scroll through music or videos with my rig is an exercise in extreme frustration as it stalls and hiccups and jumps around like it has a mind of its own. If that's just my antiquated hardware then it may not be an issue, but it at least makes me wonder if maybe trying to scroll a long document would be similarly futile.

I know it may take some getting used to, but these changes make a lot more sense, especially if considering the iCloud photo storage options. The old photo stream was NOT good, because most people had the misunderstanding that it backed up your photos forever (what iCloud photo storage will now do), as opposed to the 30 day & 1000 photo limit. I'm still correcting people's misunderstanding of photo streams that haven't yet upgraded to iOS 8, and glad that iOS 8 treatment of photos will now be more like how most people thought the old photo streams worked anyway.

Albums are still there if you use those to organize your photos manually (right most tab in the photos app), and iCloud "Shared photo streams" are still there (the better way to organize your photos in my opinion since 1, it didn't use up your iCloud storage quota and 2, it synced across all devices, even when replacing/switching/upgrading devices). E.g. - I have a "Possible profile pics" shared iCloud photo album that's only shared with myself. This has been an easy Goto album whenever I needed to pic an avatar pic or profile pic. I haven't had to worry about upgrading or switching devices and losing my photo organization.

I'm happy they got rid of the Camera Roll finally, so that we can continue moving away from the archaic and "backup unfriendly" paradigm of locally stored, device specific, false-security (as if no one can steal your sensitive photos), and storage size limited photos, videos, books, and music. Bring on cloud storage and better educating the public on how to better secure that cloud storage.

Long ago turned off photo stream to avoid duplicates (maybe that got fixed?) So I delete when Aperture auto-launches to upload whatever photos are detected on the "roll" followed by a sync that puts any new photos in the overall collection., sorted by date, location etc.

Haven't had to upload any photos since the OS upgrade to see how that process has changed. Might be a good thing to experiment with, just take a few random shots today and find out where they go and how they're now handled.

This kind of change is just retarded.  Camera Roll was quite perfect the way it was.

At least users should have the choice of adopting this way of sorting photos, or not...

    Wrong.

Which is wrong?  I've spent enough time on ios8 to know my way around the changes and I'm not updating my own devices while it's the only option.  Doesn't work for me.  It's as much a less ideal way of having image management, for me, as 7 was compared to OS X.

Camera Roll wasn't perfect but this is less so.  Could I get used to it if I had to?  Of course.  Sure does contribute to my sense that Apple is still putting form over function in certain areas they would be better off not.

How is having all your images in one place that insurmountable a challenge? "Recently Added" is too confusing?

Plus as far as I can see I still have access to the photos I just shot from within the "camera" app: sounds like "camera roll" to me.

Sort of.  But recently added only shows me the past 30 days.   Beyond that I can't see any way to browse them in the same manner.   And if I want to use a commonly accessed picture not added within the post month it means a trip down to the bottom to access the Years, Moments, etc, and then all of the shared images are mixed in with the ones taken on the device.

I'm seeing how it's easy to deal with recent images but once it's 30 days it seems to be a different story (among other things when accessing NOT recent pictures).  Certainly not explained to the contrary by Apple that I can find, though I'll be happy to be shown where and how.

You realise you can create personalised albums where you can put commonly accessed photos.
