Degrees of Separation... How far are _you_ from The Truth?

You know the idea... everyone is at most 6 or 7 "degrees of separation" from anyone else in the world. A degree of separation typically being "friend of", or "knows", but not "bumped into once".

But in the world of computers, is the number lower? And in the world of Mac-people, is it lower still?

So, how many steps are you away from the source of complete knowledge - Steve Jobs?

I'm two or three... A friend of a friend of a friend, or a friend of a "knows", though the "knows" is probably a bit of a stretch...

Unfortunately, this doesn't give me any insider knowledge...

So, I don't think I'm special, but am I average, or better than average? How many "a friend of"s are you from The Truth?

(I'm not going to name names, and I'd guess many people here wouldn't want to either!)

A guy I know through the music biz (he maintains the web site of on of the musicians who's big in my genre) works at Apple in the Web Objects division. I've met him, and he's met Jobs, and that's two degrees!

Heh...you think that's bad, you should see some other large companies. Apple's management structure is relatively flat in comparision.

I remember at Nortel (before the massive layoffs) there were over 10 (maybe as many as 15) levels below the CEO.

But at Apple, hell, I just have to be promoted five times and I can be CEO.

My dad had dinner with Jobs years ago around the time of some computer expo. He also had a chat with Bill Gates. He's got photos with both of them.

    That's two steps.

<img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> No no no no... My dad was just another late-70's/early-80's computer entrepreneur.

I once spoke with Steve Jobs. Well, to be honest, he gave a speach at my University and at the end there was a question and answer session. I asked him a question and he answered it. Still... technically, we did speak to each other.

So, anyway, being so close and all, I've got all the inside scoop. For instance: G6 next week. Hmmm... maybe I shouldn't mention that here. Oh, what harm could it do.
