Update Problems

My soon to be old imac is going to undergo its last update from 8.5.1 to 8.6. I downloaded what I thought was the appropriate updater from Apple but last night on e-bay i saw a CD with the "full installer" for sale at well over £20. My question is what is the difference between the two? Does the updater not do exactly the same thing?
