I'm not sure what you meant by, put up with the rest of the phone as the OS is very intuitive, fast and actually fun to use. Have you actually used say a Lumia 930, I think in all honestly even the most staunch iOS user would like it. Though it's like anything else, if go you into it with a closed mind, no matter how good it is, most around these parts will shoot it down simply because it isn't an Apple product.

I've tried ALL those phones, I try all phones I buy, or don't buy... I don't change phones often (3-5 years).

Try probably several dozens phones of many generations before changing

The 1020 is just too much of a compromise. I've got 30 years of SRL and DSRL and high end compacts behind me. So, it is not like I don't know what I'm looking at.

It is also funny how specs are not important all when Apple is on top and the most important thing even when they are not.  Remember the supposedly "weak" Apple phone because it couldn' resist unatural forces...

You can't have it both ways. Either the user experience is the most important, or the specs. Apple so happen these days to be top notch in both (probably because it is positioned at the highest end of the cell phone experience). Many androids phones are not well rounded devices.

I think others have already pointed this out, but let me see if I have this right:

Android users are fine talking about specs, until actual benchmarks prove those specs meaningless.

Android users are fine talking about benchmarks, as long as Apple devices aren't beating them in the same benchmarks.

I think I've got it now.

I know this is going back a while, but didn't a team of HP engineers hack an original iPad and find out that it ran WebOS faster than their tablet at the time? To me, that's proof positive that Apple knows what their doing with hardware, regardless of what the pundits for 64 cores and a million GB of ram claim.

This article is so biased and poorly explained it just plane wrong.
As a indie mobile game developer let me share my thoughts.
I plan on buying the note 4 Snapdragon edition and the iPhone 6 plus but if I had to choose one for personal use only I would take the note no hesitation.
what the article failed to mention is that the innovations to the core OS introduced by iOS 8 are equivalent to Android L and not android 4.4.4.
By switching to a core New core Web kit on iOS and adding swift and metal apple has optimised software to enable it to run with minimal ram and tweaked usage of raw Cpu and GPU performance something that Android L will do to.
by switching from Dalvik CM and JIT to Android Run Time aka ART plus an overhauled Web kit will offer similar performance enhancing features that have not been mentioned or compared in this artical.
The iPhone like it's predecessor all ways works blazing fast at first but as the software moves ahead and worse when new hardware of iOS are released the iPhones benchmark go down constantly and without deviation only worsening but on android thanks to custom roms higher customizable core os and kernels the benchmarks only go up with time.
Regarding games, don't forget as a user or developer I have 2 options on the note 4. Push the game to the max resolution or keep it on 1080P or so with anti aliasing and similar atributes that would result in a perfect looking and much faster running game since the benchmarks compared 2K to 10th
I love apple but feeling first hand their horrendous customer service on high end macs their excuses and unwillingness to admit widely known hardware defects and denying warranty usage for see issues is infuriating and symbolic of the hybris they have been guilty of more and more in the past years.
The note has the lowest SAR levels of nearly all smartphones to date. The iPhone usually has the highest (radiation)
The build quality of the 6 plus is unquestionably sub par for Apple and sub par compared to the note 3 or 4
The Amoled is a screen that most tech experts consider inherently suppirior to LTD regardless of the panel (Ips) or its version.
The battery and connectivity of the note 3 and 4 are in every way one of the best in thee market
the screen size and resolution compared to device size and weight are also better on the Note and this is fact in figures.
The iPhone 6 plus is overpriced and for no justifiable reason especially considering it's fragile exterior.
I loved apple and I still hate samsung but apple has shown me in their stores through their employees, product design and customer care that they are holier then thou and that keeps pushing me away and keeps lowering their quality and standard they once had

Stop buying the hype just sit back and watch the subtext and decide what style you prefer cus in the end they will both disappoint you

    Nope your not right.
To some people (on both sides) specs only matter when their choice is beating the "enemy".
Either case it's just stupidity and tribalism leading to the or gin al meaning of fan .... fanatic.
I'm personally not bothered when the latest and greatest out specs what I use as long as what I am using is doing what I want.

The Note is an Amplification Tool. You can use the crystals that are inside it to transmit the Energy Outward?
    Does iPhone have healing crystals?

Well, I'd say you both are right. Specs on phones to me = flexing biceps in a way. When the guy flexing biceps is an accountant, and strong arms come in handy on occasion to lift file boxes but it turns out just about everyone can lift the boxes...

I see the tribalism equivalent. Maybe it's a way of feeling justified for spending money most didn't need to spend? Maybe it's a feeling of being the 'best' at something? Who knows. Who cares. It's silly. Most phones are more than enough for most people.

The PROBLEM is that SS and now MS, BB and even HTC have a strong case of iPhone envy. So some use specs to push their phones like HP in a sports car. So when my prius does 0-60 faster than a 300hp muscle car (it doesn't, but my prius is the iPhone in this metaphor) that result is important. And relevant.

As for the OP why waste 500 words when 10000 will do.  A little brevity will go along way to making your point without the overload.

Nah..if you are going to do an enjoyable rant, there's nothing worse than running out of steam too early - kinda pointless and embarrassing like a puffed up kid in front of the class with nothing else to say. Sorry if I was unclear - I was agreeing that QD tech in LCDs is the next big improvement and flagship display makers will be using it in upcoming displays. It's the biggest deal in LCD tech in a while and will be the main driver of LCD improvements over the next several years.

I am surprised that the one Fire tablet (I believe) is the only shipping product today with a QD display. After that tablet was released and the way its display trounced its competitors, I thought for sure that QD displays would come out in subsequent devices. But since 2013, has anyone else in the mobile space?

Is it still that cadmium issue holding it back or cost?

Before I write a word further, please see my Official Apple Fanboy badge before even thinking that I'm a Samsung fan. FYI: the only Samsung stuff I own is inside of gear, mostly that from Apple, where I have no choice in the matter.

With that out of the way, just for argument's sake and to bring a little bit of "focus" to informed discussion, Samsung released a "worth-a-second-look" and in some ways, truly unique camera with the NX1 at Photokina Cologne last month. If you're interested in specs and details, please refer to the following links.

In summary: they're pushing the other big names you mentioned, Canon and Nikon, to quit the "feature cutting" they so often do so as to have 10 cameras with differentiating specs, rather than say 3-5 "feature complete" solutions for pros, enthusiasts, and novices.

I wrote a forum post a couple of weeks ago in a photo blog that had some people calling me a troll (me? A troll? Preposterous!). In it I stated how Canikon better get their act together and quick, because innovation is coming from Sony, Fuji, and Panasonic (also Olympia) on the sensor chip/camera side... while Tamron, and especially Sigma... are causing even the pros to discuss whether they are a better solution in price AND quality than "native glass". The "Art Series" of glass from Sigma is stunning, not only for the price, but because the series is a few notches below Zeiss at 5x and Canikon at 2x prices, and have won numerous awards.

IMHO, Nikon is still relevant because of their choice to use Sony chips, easily the best in the business (Apple uses them too). Canon is hanging on because of their traditional strength in video. BOTH of them are relying far too much on their past achievements and the amount of money that pros have invested in one or the other's eco-system. However, a day doesn't go by without at least one big name photographer, posting how they've sold it all or kept a minimum of "old gear"... and have went mirrorless or 4/3rd... which means a different name than Canikon is on their strap and camera.

If Samsung manages to get even more pros to consider something other than Canikon... or the pros at least questioning WHY they have to make compromises with every model released by the Big Deuce... I shouldn't be hateful enough in denying that Samsung is doing something at least half-way right here.

at disneyland in lines, i pulled out my iPhone 6 Plus to send some texts and watch some of the baseball game and some kid next to me with a samsung note 3 decided to start talking about how much his phone is better spec wise to his cousin or whatever. Saying stuff like "it has a bigger screen (5.7 vs 5.5") but the iphone 6 plus is longer and thinner. The pictures come out so much better and has better lighting, and oooh i can run more than one app at the same time. isn't that cool." The more I ignored him the more he kept talking about specs. Earlier the same day I was getting complements of how good the screen looked watching videos and some of the pictures I took. They were surprised it was the iphone 6 plus, many of the people never had the chance to actually see it in person, more even being used in the real world. (This probably speaks to the high demand) I have a feeling that the kid felt envious and a little insecure that someone had a super hard to get iphone 6 plus, and mommy didn't want to buy him one haha. It really is pretty good performance even my friend with me in line with a Moto X was really impressed by it.

don't get me started on the did it bend yet questions i got. Does it look bent??? nope

I think you can look at this like a pissing match all you want but I didn't really see it that way. I mean granted we are on Apple insider so things are bound to be a little Apple of center ;-). In any case I thought of this more along the lines of comparing the two companies methodologies. The reasoning for my answers some’s from two major places. My cousin used to work for Samsung's chip fabrication devision in Austin and that I'm a consultant who has had the pleasure of working on a number of projects for large companies.

In the case of Apple it seems to me that this article exposes the fact that Apple seems to be playing the "long game" and playing it extremely well in regards to performance and efficiency in their products. Every year like clock work for over 7 years now we've seen Apple introduce and expand there work on improving efficiency within their products like integrated batteries in the MacBooks, the work they've done in OS X to improve the OS's efficiency, custom chips, metal and swift. I don't think (and correct me if I'm wrong) but, no other company in the industry has really put as much effort and shown as much progress in the field as Apple.

As the article mentions the A4 was the first chip where we saw Apple try to focus the CPU and GPU to best meet their needs. Ever since then with the A4 A5 A6 (especially) the A7 and A8 chips we've seen extraordinary effort by Apple to design a chip that wasn't just powerful but incredibly efficient. The move to 64bit by Apple was a natural step by Apple to future proof their phones and make sure that when the limits of 32bit frameworks finally comes to phones that their users and developers will not only have to not worry but not care. There are also advantaged they can take now but i digress.

I remember telling my friend back when the iPhone 4 came out with the retina display “just watch the competitors are going to start putting more and more dense displays in their phones and the funny thing is that it quite literally doesn’t matter. literally no one will be able to tell the difference.” Now i know it’s true that you can see a little difference but it’s so little that it really doesn’t matter.

In any case i’ve always appreciated Apples stance of creating great products. professionally I’m a user experience architect and internally our slogan is to “give people what they need not what they ask for.” It stems from that Henry Ford quote of “if i asked my customers what they wanted they would have told me a faster horse” Apple keeps their products and their business focused and that to me is the key to their success.

Bigger screens, Higher screen density, quad core, hex core, octal core, 64bit, and virtually everything els you can think of are completely useless on their own but join them together to meticulously structure and interconnect them with a central goal in mind and the results can be pretty amazing ;-)

Thank you, finally some sense in the conversation. I am just so overwhelmed what I can do with a modern day phone, let it be a phone running iOS, Android, Windows 8 Mobile, FireFox OS, Ubuntu Touch, SailFish, even Symbian. Everyone has their mobile platform of choice, is it better then rest of them, absolutely not, as it depends on the user to bring the most out of it. I can make a Nexus 5 situp, play dead, flip over and do things that are just not possible on an iPhone, I can access the K1's GPU in a Shield and add it to a networked GPU cluster for encoding, I can run 3 different OS's on my Nexus 10, plug a monitor into it's HDMI port, sync a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, startup Ubuntu and you would never know that you were working off of a ARM tablet. My BlackBerry Porsche P'9882, I can stream a movie from NetFlix, display it via miracast to my TV, download another other movie in the background from my OneDrive and play Need for Speed all at the same time, I can take take two similiar photos with my Canon 5D Mark II and my Nokia 1020 and ask someone to tell which one was done by the DSLR and which one by a phone and I've done this a few times, the Nokia was chosen about half the time as the DSLR. My iPad, I have never heard or seen such wonderful music creation apps in my entire life, I can produce an entire album just using it as the mixer, recorder, synth and finially encode. All of these wonderful tools.

Yes, Samsung is not the most likable company because of the crap they pull but their also falling faster in the market place then a penny thrown off of the Empire State Building. Their time of reckoning is at hand, either they learn from their mistakes or will eventually dissapear into abscurity. Though finding every single bit of negative information about them is like hitting a blind, malnourished tiger that can still roar a little but ultimately is harmless.

I really dislike this thing vs. This other thing, us against them. As a person who uses and appreciates technology from pretty much everyone it's extremely hard for me to categoricaly name one device superior. I find the value and uses in most things, as well as the bad as there is no such thing as the perfect device, no matter how many buy it, support it, even evangelize around it. Just have a little more of an open mind, what you call crap is the best thing to happen to someone else.

Excellent write up, just know that being called a Troll is not always a bad thing, especially if your statements make others think. I play devils advocate more then I should and seem anti-Apple while doing it, thus ultimately ending in me being called a Troll, even though I own more shares of their stock than probably anyone here, been here for a decade and spend an obscene amount of time reading just this forum. Don't let it effect you, I love your comments and personality, so do a lot of other people, screw'em those that can't take an alternative opinion without debating in a civilized way and have to resort to name calling.

In a way, I could care less about the graphics performance, my wife's iPhone 4 is ample for anything I will ever do- I'm retired. (I'm getting an iPhone 6 Plus because I need the larger screen for bad eyes) But. what I hate is the Android OS, it's flexible and can have many cool mods, that's cool, but when that excitement fades away, I'm left with a pretty boring and ugly mobile OS. I used Android for a while and got rid of it. I think 100s of thousands more will be leaving Android just because now Apple has larger screens and now they can go to iOS and the spectacular services that come with it.

The problem is we're not talking about Ford vs Chevy or Playstation vs Xbox.  The Android conundrum is something entirely different, i.e. Google wants to build the same stranglehold on mobile computing that Microsoft once had on desktop computing, and as we all recall, that was not a Good Thing for us.  Google is happy to spread its "free" software to every unimaginative Asian manufacturer it can, so long as it can track the every move of its every user and sell advertising targeted at them (Hey, just like in all those dreary sci-fi movies!).  If in the process it has to kill (read: sell to the Chinese) the last remaining other American (besides Apple) smartphone manufacturer (Motorola), well, sometimes a few eggs get broken on the road to world domination.

Then said unimaginative Asian manufacturers (see: Samsung) take the "free" Google software, add their own "creative" (see: stolen from Apple to the tune of $1 billion in damages) touches and flood the marketplace with dozens of iterative devices to corner the market, seizing its own stranglehold on hardware while gifting Google with a stranglehold on search/software, well yeah, some of us have a problem with that.

In the meantime, Google tells everyone how Good it is ("Data collection?  Pfft, only because we love you!") and how Bad the "closed" alternative is (Apple), and the masses lap it up like ignorant fools tend to do.  Me, I know what a 90% dominant tech company does to the overall industry.  I once cheered on Google for knocking Microsoft down.  But rather than equalize the playing field, Google has simply taken their place.  Like a military coup that deposes a ruthless dictator only to install its own.  No thank you.

Yeah, it's very much an Us Against Them situation here.  Wake up.  There's more at stake here than the logo that happens to appear on your favorite tech device.

If you can get away from the fact that the galaxy s5 is a samsung device and instead focus on OLED as a technology, it is FAR better than LCD.

OLED has perfect blacks, better colors when calibrated, and lower power draw especially when displaying black.

No need to confuse samsung's implementation with a poor technology.

OLED has come a long way and is now an excellent top contender technology. But to call it 'far better than LCD' is completely inaccurate. There is good reading to be found over at DisplayMate: iPhone 6 Display Technology Shoot-Out.
