Apple's MacWorld Uber-Hype : A fishing expedition for the public's appetite

did anyone else find it extremely unusual that Apple would make such hype-pumping statements leading up to MacWorld and then not deliver something of monumental proportion ?

yes. i am aware of what was released at MacWorld. thank you.

but the delivery did not = the hype.

was there an ulterior motive?

did Apple fan the flames and beat the bushes to measure what the public was ready for? dual purpose buzz building: prick up the ears of the public for a new product in a down market while doing some cheap market research?

a fishing expedition for public apetites? a provocational alert to the tech media ? maybe "out" some members of the press who could no longer sit on inside information they were keeping for "just the right scoop" if Apple was really going to drop "the Big One".

i don't know about you but i was prepared to be astounded and ended up with "harumph!".

it seems as though you can only use that bait once. well, maybe "once" is overstating it: how about "once in a great while"?

they slopped a lot of chum in the water and when the hungry sharks came to dinner there was not much to get caught up in.

    hmmm, well they DID get ALOT of publicity, acclaim and attention.

    the end result was an awesome iMac, that was not worht the hype. that is an interesting thought though. It makes sense too, that apple would do a market research type thing through the hype....its a bit far fetched though, cause I'm pretty damn sure apple knows what we want and has known for quite some time.

    The pre-Macworld hype was not for the general public. It was for Mac fans. The general PC user could care less. It was also a bit of a put on for people like you who expect the company to reinvent the computer everytime they come out with a new one.

    Use your intellect on more important things.

    that's bullshit. their hype was not just targeted at the "hardcores". It was extremely public and got attention of mainstream press. Big difference.

    Apple survices on hype. without it they are nothing. Jobs created the most hype and publicity for the iMac that anyone could possibly achieve.

    Is it wrong to hype something that much that doesn't quite live up to the hype?

    I think so but there are positives to it as well

    Hype? All I remember is a couple of somewhat creative statments on their front page. You created the hype. ("You" as in everybody who started having wet dreams about this Macworld.)

    Why are we discussing this again, now, a month after everyone has gotten over the requisite post-Macworld letdown?

    If it wasn't hype then what was it?

    I think Apple thought the new iMac and iPhoto were a bigger deal than you did.

    I've never seen Apple deliver on the kind of exectations we have for them. Never.

    I happen to think a DVD-RW, 15" LCD, All-in-One with FireWire and wireless antennae combined with a $1800 price-tag is pretty snazzy.

    I am worried about iPhoto though. I haven't ordered a single print off of it.

    I'm not too worried about iPhoto. I haven't had the occasion to order prints or books or anything myself, but this IMO is gravy in terms of the OEM deal with Kodak and income from it. They don't make money from iTunes or iMovie really either unless you buy their CDs (do they sell CD-Rs?).

    I do think that it might take some feature revisions of iPhoto to hit its sweet spot with consumers. (The demands for this will change anyway as time goes on.) We've discussed some requested changes --naming rolls, some more color correction/exposure tools, etc. I suspect they can be pretty nimble with it, and if no one orders albums, they'll drop it and add Photo CD burning or something.

    i've got to start using my shift key and get myself a freelance writing gig:

    <a href="http://www.siliconvalley.com/mld/siliconvalley/business/technology/personal_technology/2666506.htm"; target="_blank">http://www.siliconvalley.com/mld/siliconvalley/business/technology/personal_technology/2666506.htm</a>;

    and also,

    just to tear it open once again to some silly speculation;

    is it possible that apple had an announcement in the pr canon that they didn't let fly at macworld ? hence the anti-climax ?

    no, that's just serving up an easy rumor-out.
