Google announces Nexus 6 phablet, Nexus 9 tablet, & Apple TV-like Nexus Player
Search giant Google on Wednesday unveiled three new Nexus-series devices --?a new 6-inch smartphone, 9-inch tablet, and set-top streaming media box - that will launch alongside the next version of the company's mobile operating system, Android 5 Lollipop.
The Nexus 6 will be made by former Google subsidiary Motorola and sports, fittingly, a 493-ppi, 6-inch display, besting Apple's iPhone 6 Plus by half an inch in diagonal space. The device ships with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 quad-core processor clocked at 2.7 gigahertz and an Adreno 420 graphics chip.
Google says the Nexus 6 will run for up to 24 hours on its 3,220 mAh battery, while a quick charge mode will give users 6 hours of battery life after charging for 15 minutes. It also sports a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera with optical image stabilization.
Preorders for 32- and 64-gigabyte variants of the Nexus 6 will begin on Oct. 29 for an unlocked price of $649, and the handset will make its way to retail stores next month.
The Nexus 9 was designed in collaboration with Taiwanese device maker HTC and brings an 8.9-inch, 2,048-pixel-by-1,536-pixel display to the table. The tablet is powered by nVidia's Tegra K1 64-bit processor with a 2.3 gigahertz clock speed and the firm's Kepler graphics architecture.
Its 6,700 mAh battery is said to be good for 9 hours of battery life. Google has also added an 8-megapixel rear camera and bumped the onboard RAM capacity to 2 gigabytes.
The Nexus 9 will be available for preorder on Oct. 17 in 16- and 32-gigabyte configurations -- with optional LTE support -- for $399 and $479, respectively. The 32-gigabyte LTE version will retail for $599 when they are released "later this year."
Following the disastrous rollout of Google TV, the company has rethought its living room strategy with the Nexus Player. Manufactured in partnership with Asus, the Apple TV-style box runs on Google's new Android TV and ships with one remote control -- a very simple model that also includes a microphone for voice search functionality.
A gamepad will be sold separately. There is no word yet on pricing, though Google has offered an Oct. 17 preorder date and said retail availability will follow next month.

Hope the Nexus 6 with Snapdragon 805 performs better than the Note 4, because that phone gets its ass handed to it by the iPhone 6. Even the iPhone 5S outperforms the Note 4 in most CPU tests.
64bit and 2GB RAM for the Nexus 9? Waiting for the 64bit experts to tell us that you need more than 4GB RAM before 64bit becomes relevant.

The Note 4 has the same processor in most of the world, including the US. You might be confused since DED wrote his hit piece based on the Exynos version knowing that it always underperforms the Snapdragon.

I can almost guarantee you that 64 bit Android running on this processor with that screen resolution will suck. But hey, they can stick "Now with extra 64-bit power!" on the spec sheet and moronic consumers will buy it just because.
They'll be in real trouble when they can no longer just increase the screen size and make a poor attempt at copying iPhone features.

$649?!? Nice Google! Seeing as the attractive and reasonable 3-400$ price, was one of the Nexus phones main advantages and differentiators, it appears that Google has managed to price itself out of the market!
(Though the Nexus phones were always small potatoes next to the iPhones, Samsung Galaxy and Moto's phones in the sales figures.)
And "besting" the iPhone 6+ in screen size?!? For Christ's sake AI... It's not a contest, and not like bigger means better here.

Otherwise you'd see people dumping their iPhones in favor of iPad Mini's.
Sure, some consumers like a screen that's bigger than 4 inches.
But somewhere past 5.2 inches that number starts dropping sharply. (as evidenced by the iphone6 outselling the 6+ by big margins)
And once you get to 6 inches, there won't be many left. Even most of the people who happily got a Galaxy Note and Note 2 are bound to say: "Christ That thing is huge! Monstrously huge! Too huge!"

What does Exynos have to do with anything? The Snapdragon based Note 4 gets its ass handed to it by the 5S in most CPU tests, nvm the 6.

The rumor mills have confused it with Google TV, Android TV, ChromeCast, Nexus Q, or any number of other failed (being a little harsh...not sure if Chromecast has failed yet, but it is hardly mass market) attempts by Google in the living room space.

This is actually not true. Back in the Spring they confirmed Android 5 would be 64 bit (on proper hardware obviously). The new ART runtime is 64bit, Dalvik is dead. There's no emulator yet because there's no hardware for developers to test it on yet. This Nexus 9 with whatever Nvidia chip will be the first in that dark side of the world.
Now you know why Apple waits until the last minute to annouce there meetings. Google & Samsung know they need to be before Apple's meetings if they can. If Apple's dates were not leaked. you would never see these introductions until after Apple's. Copy, Copy, Copy.
Android 5 is fully compatible with 64Bit code, both for ARM and Intel, now if it's any good will be a discussion for another time. I just pre-ordered the Nexus 9, so I'll play with it.
