What do recent G4 pronouncements mean?

I was wondering what people felt about the new range of QS towers and recent statements from moto and apple engineers on the G4?

With moto maintaining that mac users can look forward to many incremental advancements from the G4 yet does this mean that the G5 is a long way off and that in the meantime we may be looking at the odd 100Mhz upgrade every few months (God I hope not ). Or are they refering to the use of the G4 in the imacs?

I was deeply disappointed in the new macs but can't reconcile the noises being made about the G4 with speculation about the G5 being near. In fact it now sounds as if we might not see the G5 until 2003 at the earliest (maybe even 2004 )

Also, not being a techno dude I'm puzzled about the Appllo. As I understand it the main difference with this processer is that requires less power, gives off less heat, is easier to fab and supports DDR in some way (please corrct me if I am wrong). if this is the case then how come:

1) There's no DDR in the QS?

2) The Towers aren't cheaper than they are?

Also, given the probs with the processors of recent apples, does anyone think that apple will finally pull out a mega processor only to hamper the pro mac with another cut down graphics card a la GF4MX? I'm sure that apple woudl sell more towers with something like a Wildcat in them.

All in all the G5 seems miles away now. <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" /> <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

The new processors do support DDR, there is 2megs of L3 cache using DDR for each processor. What apple hasn't done yet is implement DDR in the main system bus. DDR is being used where it will make the biggest difference, between the processor and L3 cache.

The towers aren't cheaper because apple is a buisiness and they are in buisiness to make a profit. End of story. Apple thinks they can sell machines at this price point and they are right.

I am fairly certain we won't see the G5 'till next year.

Replace "What apple..." with "What Motorola...".

The 745x supports DDR only on its L3 cache interface, not on its front side bus.
