Gateway Tanks

The WSJ reports today that "Gateway warned of a first-quarter loss before taxes and charges of $100 million to $120 million on a 50% sales drop." I guess Gateway needs a "little help from their friends".

This isn't too surprising seeing as how the only thing Gateway has going for them right now is? Um? Uh, say? just what does Gateway have that no one else does?

Hmmmm, let's think about that one for a minute?

    Let's see? There's

    <a href="http://www.gateway.com"; target="_blank">Really Bad Web Design

No, wait, even HP has that?

A really stupid slogan: ?You've got a friend in the business.?

No, wait, ?Dude, you're getting a Dell? is pretty stupid too?

Hmmm, what does gateway have the no other PC Maker could ever hope to attain?

Oh! I got it, I got it!

    Ted Watt's Pony Tail!

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this is the secret to Gateway's future success. They must learn to harness the power of Ted Watt's dorky neo-yuppie pony tail and goofy corn-fed grin. Only then will they be able to take on the likes of Micron, PackardBell, AlienWare, and maybe even SuperDell.

    The future is bright, indeed.

    ciao, bellas

While Gateway was set to sponsor the 2002 Olympics years ago, they obviously had enough steam to not pull out. Gateway is probably one of the only manufacturers that would stick it out and keep in competition with Dell.

For IBM, PCs aren't a big part of their business.

For HP, staying in the PC business means swallowing Compaq.

For Gateway, they have no choice.

    Gateway will probably survive.

When HP and Compaq finally merge, there will be only two major players in PCs. Them and Dell. Gateway will be cow chips.... no more... bye, bye.. finis.

Just look at the cost of the top of the line Gateway 700xl..$2,999.00? Look at the specs and then look at the price again and you can see why they are in economic straits. Too much $ for such modest equipment.

Closing all those retail shops creates the public impression (true or not, though it probably IS true) that Gateway is circling the drain. Plus, that means fewer sales outlets, so OF COURSE their sales volume is going to drop, especially in this economy.

As has been said above, Gateway doesn't really have anything to offer any more. They used to offer great packages at prices competitive with Dell, but not any more.

Analysts are upset that Gateway is going after market share rather then profits. Oh, and the same analysts are mad that Apple is more interested in making profits and not increasing market share! And you wonder why these mealy-mouthed cretins were up on Capitol Hill being grilled by Congress for their complicity in pushing the stock of Enron and other companies that their own employers were funding. Ever hear of conlfict of interest?

I wouldn't agree. It fares very well compared to the dual 1GHz G4.

Maybe you missed out on the fact that it comes with an 18" LCD display.

    Specs:

    2.2GHz NW

    512MB RDRAM

    24X DVD

    24X CDRW

    GeForce 4 Ti 4600

    BA 5.1 Audio System

    120GB HD

    18" LCD

Let's face it, The PC market is driven by price. That's the only difference between PC companies. As soon as someone (Dell) under cuts the price, the rest get hurt. The PC companies don't provide any value add. That's why IBM and others are having problems. They can't compete with Dell because they can only compete on price. The PC buyer doesn't care about anything else. Buy the cheapest box (or build your own out of parts).

I think Gateway is doomed. They don't do retail very well and they don't do direct very well. They aren't in the business market and now Dell is expanding into the consumer market.

The lowend Gateway I'm getting for my gramps is actually cheaper than the lowend Dell. Go figure.

Performance for price this pc sucks. I checked one out at the gateway store in Jacksonville and the video performance was piss poor compared to my "dated". "slow", Ti500 Powerbook. There is no comparison to my powerbook and this pc for the same price.

Gateway Tanks: i thought, by reading this header, that you were going to comment on the size and attractiveness of Gateway computers...that they "looked like a tank", not that their business was "going into the tank"....g
