I just look at Beats headphones and figure...yeah, but the Sony MDR-V6's are $75. And I don't have any street cred anyway.

I looked up street red and saw your picture!

Keep hoping. All the Beats models sound like garbage.

That's an exaggeration. I have more than a handful of headphones around the house, and while Beats is certainly not the best, it's far from 'garbage.' Despite the sneers of the aural snobs, they're decent.

Apple seems pretty firm about values of shipping stuff that's not junk ("We couldn't build a laptop under $500 that wasn't junk"). Or is it okay to sell overpriced stuff that's not great?

I've always felt that Apple retained certain values of quality and reasonably priced products for what you get. Maybe that doesn't extend to accessories, like 30 cent iPad covers that sell for $40 (or whatever) or 30 cent iPhone cases that sell for $40.

Overpriced accessories are for chumps? Must be their internal motto and maybe the motto of most of the industry.

Not sure if Apple II was being sarcastic, but if not, selling overpriced, mediocre products:

            1. Harm the brand

You might not like Beats, but what is not to get? Apple will fully realize the purchase price in the sale of audio equipment in less than three years. Further, it now owns the Beats Music streaming services, which is quite good, and it can start utilizing that asset to improve Apple's music offerings ASAP.

It also has acquired more shelve space for its products, thereby increasing its purchasing power. I wouldn't pay $300 for headphones, but apparently there are plenty of people that would.

Additionally, you would have to assume Apple's accountants  reviewed beats finances.

Here is the thing, you are not the market. Clearly, people are purchasing the product. Further, assuming arguendo that you are correct and the product isn't great, Apple clearly can improve the product if necessary.

I have three pairs of headphones covering lowish (AKG Y50), mid-tier (Philips Fidelio M1) and high-end (B&W P7) price points and they're all great sound quality wise, but you can still easily tell which ones sound better and its the more expensive models! So its not a myth that usually the more you spend on a headphone, the better the sound you get from them. With the exception up until now being Beats headgear that is, which aren't! These new designs still look way too gaudy and plasticky for my taste, and I'm sceptical of the sound quality too...still not a fan of this overrated brand.

Once they are up to Apple's quality standards, I'd rather see a white ? on them and they be called Apple Headphones. Time to bury the old name and identity.

I cannot see Jony Ive writing "wireless" on his products ... so 'no', most likely designed by beats.

Doesn't really matter what kind of headphones anyone buys, most people listen to mindless shit-music. That is your market.

High margins, vivid colors, minimalistic design...they belong with Apple. Thank you Marvin for your great post.

When do I get to use these - or any other BT headphones - with my AppleTV?

I cannot see Jony Ive writing "wireless" on his products ... so 'no', most likely designed by beats.

The wired version of the same design was announced just after the acquisition:

    http://gizmodo.com/beats-solo2-a-new-day-same-beats-by-dre-1583150762

The design and brand wasn't done by Beats but has always been outsourced to Ammunition (the company founded by Jony Ive's predecessor at Apple):

    http://www.ammunitiongroup.com/work/beats/

Their last input is listed here as the wireless version of the buds in June:

    http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2014-06-12/the-designer-behind-beats-bulky-look-gets-ready-to-bow-out

The wireless version of Beats Solo 2 would have to retain the same design as the wired one but whatever the next Beats designs are, they will be done by Apple. They said they'll keep the Beats brand though and they'll likely just iterate on roughly the same aesthetic design.
