I'm supposed to be working on a paper right now, so of course, I was on the internet shopping Anyway, I was at macmall's page and they have the pb667/dvd and 512 megs of ram for $2294! click here. Damn that's a great price, congratulations torifile! Let the MWT speculation begin, if it hasn't already yet.

it's the OLD model. not the new. nothing to speculate other than why they still have so many old ones

Remind me never to invite you to a party. But you're right, they are the old ones and the new ones are not on sale. Still, I think that this is a pretty good deal. I should have it by tomorrow.

Nice buy Torifile. Personally I don't see the need for CDRW on the road, so don't listen to a-nut.

Oh, I learned long ago to ignore the garrishness of applenut's post and look for the nugget of useful information contained in most of them.
I agree, I don't need an internal cdrw because I've already got an external firewire one. How does one do disc-to-disc copies with only one cd rom drive, anyway? Make a disc image and then burn that? What a pain... But I can get the drive upgraded for $300 and I still come out $400 ahead.

Since he doesn't need the CD-RW, it's just like the new models for him since he wouldn't use the CD-RW.

what banking company did you apply for your loan through

It was the Apple instant loan program through MBNA. The 6 months deal was time-limited and it ended a couple months ago. For some reason, though, MacMall couldn't use it so I had to charge it. BTW, I got the computer yesterday and it's GREAT. You really can't beat the price if you're in the market for one.

-torifile, happy owner of a TiBook
[edit: I forgot to answer your question]
As far as longetivity is concerned, I think that this one is going to have some staying power. It's got a reasonably large harddrive, that's relatively easily upgraded (by the user, no less). It's pretty fast as far as mhz go. The RAM allotment is plenty (512 in this deal) and is further upgradable, as well. It comes with an included airport card, with support for 128 bit encryption. The form factor is second to none, except possibly the 12.1" ibook (my former computer).
However, the expansion is somewhat limited because there are no drive bays like in previous powerbooks, but that limitedness is limited itself ( ) in that there is a full complement of ports, so external expansion is completely feasible. It's got all the latest and greatest features (except for USB 2.0. Who needs that anyway??). Oh, the video card is outdated. A 16meg Radeon, but if you don't play games, that's not a concern.
I'll be doing just about the same things you're doing, with some graphic/web design and data analysis thrown in there. The computer should be ok for several years. The question is: Will you be ? I know that I like to have the latest and greatest, so I'll be ok if I get a new compute after 1.5 years. Right now, I don't see anything coming out that would be better, but Apple has a way of surprising us...
