yeah, I've got some money in the bank. I am 26, after all. They said they'd get me a new computer in July as a congratulatory gift for my residency at Dook Univ. Med Center. So maybe they won't be averse to giving it to me a couple months early. It was too good to pass up. They're going fast, btw. Get one if you want one!

Remind me never to invite you to a party. But you're right, they are the old ones and the new ones are not on sale. Still, I think that this is a pretty good deal. I should have it by tomorrow.

Nice buy Torifile. Personally I don't see the need for CDRW on the road, so don't listen to a-nut.

Oh, I learned long ago to ignore the garrishness of applenut's post and look for the nugget of useful information contained in most of them.

I agree, I don't need an internal cdrw because I've already got an external firewire one. How does one do disc-to-disc copies with only one cd rom drive, anyway? Make a disc image and then burn that? What a pain... But I can get the drive upgraded for $300 and I still come out $400 ahead.

Since he doesn't need the CD-RW, it's just like the new models for him since he wouldn't use the CD-RW.

It was the Apple instant loan program through MBNA. The 6 months deal was time-limited and it ended a couple months ago. For some reason, though, MacMall couldn't use it so I had to charge it. BTW, I got the computer yesterday and it's GREAT. You really can't beat the price if you're in the market for one.

i really like the offer. my dilemma is whether or not to wait until a speed bump later on this year but pay a higher price or to jump on this deal. if anyone feels the need to convince me one way or the other i would be happy to hear it. my major concern is how long i would be able to use the computer before i would need to upgrade. i have been a PC user for years and am tired of having to upgrade ever 2 years. i am a student in a teacher education program and use the machine for word processing, internet research, powerpoint, some light video editing, iPhoto, etc. Let me know if any of you have some advice

I had the same concern. When the price was $2394, I had my reservations, but after the $100 price drop, I had to jump all over it. Think about it: is $700 worth the extra 100mhz that would likely be the speed bump you're expecting to you? Do you need a combo drive? If you decide to wait, realize that you're going to be either waiting for the current pb's (combo drive) to drop to this price or paying the regular price a possible reved model. So, is the wait worth getting a combo drive b/c that's the only difference between the model I got and the current ones. Plus, you could always get the same I got and get the drive upgraded by Apple for $300 and still come out saving $400. For me, the logical conclusion was to go for it. You may think differently, but you won't be disappointed if you do get it. My 2¢.

[edit: I forgot to answer your question]

As far as longetivity is concerned, I think that this one is going to have some staying power. It's got a reasonably large harddrive, that's relatively easily upgraded (by the user, no less). It's pretty fast as far as mhz go. The RAM allotment is plenty (512 in this deal) and is further upgradable, as well. It comes with an included airport card, with support for 128 bit encryption. The form factor is second to none, except possibly the 12.1" ibook (my former computer).

However, the expansion is somewhat limited because there are no drive bays like in previous powerbooks, but that limitedness is limited itself ( ) in that there is a full complement of ports, so external expansion is completely feasible. It's got all the latest and greatest features (except for USB 2.0. Who needs that anyway??). Oh, the video card is outdated. A 16meg Radeon, but if you don't play games, that's not a concern.

I'll be doing just about the same things you're doing, with some graphic/web design and data analysis thrown in there. The computer should be ok for several years. The question is: Will you be ? I know that I like to have the latest and greatest, so I'll be ok if I get a new compute after 1.5 years. Right now, I don't see anything coming out that would be better, but Apple has a way of surprising us...
