56k Modem users...

How many bytes/second do you average when downloading? I am also using AirPort, I don't know if that slows it down...I am only averaging about 2,800-3,200. The max I have ever gotten was about 3,800 but that was only for a second or so and then it dropped back down.

    I average anywhere between 4400 to 4800 with and without Airport. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

    Wow...any tips how I can download faster? I wonder if it is just my area...I keep getting mailings from Verizon telling me DSL is now available at my house (about two per month) and every time I call they tell me they cannot give it to me b/c my phone lines suck or some such nonsense.



    Oh well. Hopefully when I move to college this fall I can get DSL...

    I get about 5000 k/s (is that right? yea). The modem I dial into is not more than a mile from my place.

    I don't usually use dial up, but at times I have to, and I've noticed that the speed variations tend to be due to line noise. The cleaner the line, the closer to 56k you'll get.

    When I was on dial-up, I could pretty consistently get 6k/sec+. I'd gotten as high as 7.5k/sec from some servers... sustained. I don't know if it has anything to do with using a different modem script... but I did run a dedicated line of Cat6 from the telephone company's box to the room with the modem, so I imagine that helped.

    Just download anything, and in the download dialogue box, just look to where it says "bytes/sec" next to whatever you are downloading.

    one question starfleetX



    when i put the NM on the menu bar,

    grid lines appear in the entire menu bar,and all windows i open,

    and the grid lines stay even when i quit NM,

    anyway to fix it?

    Get Turbo Internet from <a href="http://www.macunicorn.com/"; target="_blank">Mac Unicorn</a> you get an bust of about 1 or2x.

    When I was on dial-up (**cringe**) I used to get 5-6KB/s, sometimes 9 or 10KB/s from a good server. Now I enjoy 250KB/s downloads on Cable Modem (it used to be way up over 800KB/s before @Home went up in smokes )

    No, I can't afford the rates for cable or DSL...when the ISPs and cable companies "get the clue" that 99.9% of the consumers out there will only pay $19.95 a month for ANY access to the internet then I'll get it.

    well they seem to be making a healthy profit without you... except of course for @Home
