Why not return it for the 5S?

The article said the new 2015 will have the power of the 5S but made cheaper.

The most logical 'new' 4 inch phone would be TouchID/A8 inside a 5C case.  Good night.

There is no reason for Apple to spend millions on millions to start a BRAND NEW machine line

You see I base my projections on actual practice. Apple iPhone case designs usually are good for four cycles -- Premium x2 years, mid-tier, bottom tier. The 5C after next year will be an OLD clunky design that has lasted 4 cycles. It makes sense that Apple will try to squeeze one more year out of its current 3-year lifespan, at the free phone level, assuming the 5S can be transplanted into the case as I suspect they engineered it to do. It's foolish to think Apple would hold on to a 4 year old plastic case design beyond that window in as volatile market as mobile phones. Putting Apple's cutting edge A8 technology in a four year old clunky plastic case design and selling it for $99 when they are currently getting the same thing for free is an idiotic idea. There is as much reason for Apple to spend millions to start a brand new machine line for a mid-tier product as there was when they introduced the 5C two years ago. Apple is following a very predictable pattern of both marketing and manufacturing. While it's true they can do anything, I will guarantee you they won't re-use a 4 year old plastic design to re-engineer their latest technology into and sell it for more than they are selling it currently. Show me one other instance where Apple has ever done this, and you'll at least have some credibility with your opinion.

If 4” phones aren’t popular, why did the iPhone outsell all Android phones when it was only available in 4” and smaller?

My guess is Apple will keep the colored plastic around for the low end phone. They didn't create that differentiation only to get rid of it 2 years later. It might be a plastic version of the 6 design. I think that could actually sell really well.

... or why are the combined numbers of the 5S and 5C still outselling most Android phones?

And as I've stated before, I believe that one big reason why super large, ridiculous sized Android phones have been selling, is because of people who are cheapskates, and their large phone is a compromise device, so that they don't need to purchase any great tablet like an iPad.

No need to talk like that. You made many assumptions yourself.

I just want a full featured iPhone that will fit in my damn pocket.   Thin doesn't matter, H & W do.

If I need the screen space, I bring my bag with the 11" MBA.

My thought exactly. Well, they might ditch it, they may have done something like that in the past, but that would be unusual, especially given the success of the 5C.

The logic would be that they make a 6C with the same internals as the current 6 but a smaller screen. Maybe they won't have time to make a new design but then again if we have a 6S they might have the time, who knows?

But I'm pretty certain the name 5C will disappear or only exist as the very low end, not advertised, and we'll have the 6C, 6S, and 6S Plus.

Yes, yes, yes. But hush, you're going to hurt people.

Nothing wrong with being poor (I'm not rich at all) , but having a tablet and a 4 inch phone is much better than having a 6 inch phone and no tablet !

Thank goodness that Apple have come to their senses.

They should never have dropped a flagship 4" iPhone.

Good things come to those who wait.

That is often my intention!<img class=" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" /> The truth sometime hurts.

I agree though that owning a large tablet and a small phone is far, far better than just owning a large phone. Some people might prefer to have a large phone and a large tablet, and that's fine too, but there should be the option to have a small phone also, if that's what somebody prefers.

The ONLY reason why the majority of people bought 4 inch iPhones is because they had no other choice.

I mean seriously whats next? A 3.5 inch phone?

And how many of those Android/Windows phones were actually "high end" and not crippled versions of the larger screened models with inferior processors and missing features?

Give people a real 4" option that has equivalent performance and features as the larger versions, and see how the numbers actually line up. Up to this point, aside from maybe Sony's Xperia line, there have been no apples-to-apples choices in the market, so your claims about "the majority of people" have zero validity.

Don't make it just "low end", and with 64GB option please!

The only reason that large sized Android phones caught on, was because not a single Android phone that was of a similar size to the iPhone could compete with it, and they just kept on making their phones larger, to the point of being absurd.

It's as if somebody were trying to compete with Coke, so the competitor would offer a 2 liter bottle for the same price as a .5 liter bottle of Coke.

The only thing is, who the hell would want to walk around with a 2 liter bottle of imitation Coke in their pocket? That's kind of what having a ridiculous phablet is like in my opinion. I prefer the .5 liter bottle of real Coke, thank you very much.

IMO, the 5c was a supply chain move to keep the aluminum shell fabrication from becoming a production bottleneck for the 5s launch. It shared nearly all internal components with the iPhone 5, except with a plastic shell and stamped steel frames (both of which are cheaper and faster to manufacture than CNC-machined aluminum).

Migrating the iPhone 6 (or even the 5s) internals over to a similar plastic and steel body would make sense in that it maintains one production line that doesn't require machined aluminum.

I doubt that Apple will produce a 4" high end iPhone on the basis of the supply chain efficiencies alone. Then again, I never expected the iPad mini 2/3 either (which share the same high end components as the larger iPad Air 1/2).

    Don't worry, folks...

If the day comes where it looks more and more obvious that Apple really is going to release a new 4" iPhone...

... SOG will magically change his opinion, explaining the virtue and beauty of a 4" design.

    Har!

It's also the only way to get an Android phone with the best processors and up-to-date features. Consumers that want an Android phone have to take the larger screen size in order to get the high end performance and features. Anyone that prefers the smaller screen must also take outdated processors and inferior hardware. The main reason why Android OEMs went to these ginormous screen sizes in the first place was because those phones needed huge batteries to power the larger screens and high-clocked processors. The power efficiency of the A8 gives Apple the option of designing a 4" high end phone with decent battery life and a thin form factor.

That is true. All of the flagships have been super sized, because they are unable to make a decent phone that is not gorilla sized.
