L.A. Apple Store -- The Grove

in General Discussion edited January 2014
The storefront has been decorated and on display since The Grove opened. Literature says it'll be open "Spring 2002," but nothing more specific than that. Anyone have more details?

Two floors are reserved. Could simply be high ceilings like Anthropologie, or could be some kind of superstore.

I will finally live within skating distance of an Apple Store!

I live in Austin, Texas. I have you all beat.

There will NEVER be one anywhere near me. Apple fears Dell.

Yeah, Jobs is democrat. Maybe that's why Indiana doesn't have a store yet and Illinois does.

Apple is opening stores initially in cities where Mac sales have been biggest. They are not going to do what Dell did and open stores in areas that cannot support reasonable sales goals (and hence wind up closing a large percentage of them). 20 more stores by the end of the year will continue in this vein. Based on the recent analyst conference it looks reasonable that Apple will finally break-even or make a small profit on the stores by years' end... assuming that the current economic recovery continues.

Too far to walk. Too close to make it worth driving and finding a place to park. You have something against skating?

I know precisely why this store has not opened yet and it's quite ludicrous...

    Wanna hear it?

Maybe because they want it to be about the Apple store opening and not about the Grove opening?

I hate that place. It looks like "Disney's Shopping Adventure" and has made driving both Third and Beverly a nightmare. The only redeeming feature is the Apple store. Thank god I can easily take a DASH shuttle over there; it looks like parking hell (a ten storey parking structure?!?!)

The place is great. Maggianos is a GREAT restaurant. Parking is surprisingly easy. Don't fight change my friend!

The store is not open because Apple has purchased a glass staircase for the store....and now cannot find a way to fit it in the store. NO JOKE!

I just hate the whole mallification of America thing. How many Gaps do we need?

I haven't eaten at the restaurant, so I can't say. I am glad for the merchants at the Farmer's Market- I haven't ever seen that place so packed.

There's a glass staircase in the library at our school, and they had to close it for three weeks after the library's grand opening because they realized that glass is transparent, and if you stand underneath the staircase, well, you get the idea.

At any rate, now it has really cheesy translucent plastic covers on every step. what a waste. so if you're tired of looking at internet porn, you can always rely on your new apple store.

We had the same thing in our library at school. It originally had 20 foot cielings, and they added a second floor made out of wrought iron and clear glass. D'oh! When they realised their mistake, they had to pay to have all the glass acid-etched.

This sounds like it's going to be an adventure.

Just to put it in perspective, though: There's a city-owned lot smack downtown in Iowa City that a developer offered to buy in order to build some big, ambitious development. The City gazed at its navel for a very long time, and concluded the following:

    1) Despite being sizeable and smack downtown (and currently taken up by a parking lot), the appraised sale value of the lot is $0;

    2) Despite that, the city refused to sell the property to the developer, who planned to sink a quarter of a billion dollars into his project.
