Apple offers closer look at Campus 2 as the City of Cupertino ponders diversification

Apple's spaceship-like Campus 2 project was shown from a new angle Wednesday as the company allowed members of the media on-site, while Cupertino leaders have begun to reconsider ways to diversify the city's Apple-dominated tax base.

The new photos, published by Bay Area outlet KQED, provide a sense of scale for the project. Workers shown in what will eventually be a parking garage below the massive ring of offices give an idea of how Apple will manage to shoehorn 12,000 employees into the 4-story structure.

As AppleInsider showed with exclusive aerial footage last week, the steel skeleton of the building itself has begun to rise. Construction is also underway on the underground amphitheater, which Apple is expected to use for media briefings --?events it currently holds at venues around San Francisco, and occasionally at its Infinite Loop headquarters --?and other happenings.

According to KQED, some 95 percent of the material from the abandoned Hewlett-Packard campus that occupied the site before has been recycled and will be used in the construction of Apple's headquarters.

"What Apple inherited on the property was several older buildings, all of which were broken down and deconstructed," KQED's Amy Standen said. "Much of the material from those old buildings was recycled into new building material to make the new campus, according to Apple."

Even as construction continues, Cupertino leaders are debating the best way to take advantage of Apple's expanding presence in the city. Apple already occupies approximately 60 percent of Cupertino's commercial real estate, according to the Mercury News, and the company's 16,000 employees represent 40 percent of Cupertino's jobs.

Some developers have already approached the city about expansion. At least two new hotels are in the offing, as is an overhaul of the existing Vallco shoppig mall. In addition, the city council has begun to consider raising development limits on commercial space and hotels.

A long-term plan is expected to be adopted in March. While some are concerned with the pace of development, Stanford economics professor Roger Noll told the publication that Apple's values line up well with Cupertino's.

"This is not a bad marriage," he said. "Cupertino is a very high-end suburb, not a cross-section of society. I suspect that's what Apple is going to want it to continue to be."

I bet Android owners feel like paupers in the Kings Court when they're in Cupertino. <img class=" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />

Can't wait to see Apple ]['s response to this.

For what it's worth, it should be pointed out that KQED is the main PBS affiliate in the SF Bay Area. This is not a commercial news media outlet.

AppleInsider has failed to note that, so I decided to mention it immediately.

Apple is an American company founded in 1976, that makes computers and some other nifty little gadgets.

I sure hope this project results in a nice NOVA documentary. :D

Just as long as it doesn't end up on some crappy History Channel show. They used to be a great channel and had decent documentaries until they started dumbing everything down... "Pretend this pool table is the Sun and the pool balls are atoms, blah, blah, blah." They pay some of the brightest minds to say some of the [most] stupidest things.

But yeah, I would love to see a documentary about the architecture and construction of the new campus.

For what it's worth, it should be pointed out that those are not Tim Cook's sheets and tea towels hanging on the clothes line in the foreground of the second photo of this story.

According to well-connected insider Ming-Chi Kuo, supplier chain sources reveal that those are in fact Jony Ive's sheets and tea towels, as evidenced by the stratospheric thread count, almost invisible hems and the extreme thinness of their design. However the derivative design and poor detailing of the skivvies on the clothesline next door suggest that those are blatant Samsung knock-offs. A well-informed insider said that while he couldn't confirm that the skivvies were built on a 14nm process, observers should "draw their own conclusions about whether size matters."

You all seem to be taking the Mickey out of someone or something or other that has nothing to do with the AI piece above. So please can we all get back on point.

There are more and much larger images on the KQED website, including a high resolution image of a scale model.

I'd really like to see a video that does an "ariel" view of the model to get a better feel for how it will look when it's complete. And if I'm going to make wishes, I'd also like to see how the inside is expected to look.

Apparently just slightly smaller in diameter than the Pentagon (or a circle that would circumscribe the Pentagon) and one story shorter.

The Pentagon, BTW, was constructed in 16 months (11/41-1/43), but then, they had a certain inspiration.

    1) The government can get through red tape a lot easier than a private company.

    2) I don't think they did anything unique with that design except for make it a pentagon, with five stories, five internal corridors, and 5 acres in the center, as I recall. Apple had to find a way to make large curved pieces of glass at sizes that had never before been seen, and work to make it the most modern and green building in the world.
