"Hey Siri" is great ... but about 3x an hour Siri currently activates on my iPhone due to a similar combination of words broadcast over the TV when my iPhone is near it. So that doesn't seem to be an ideal controller for a TV unless they do a LOT of work on Siri between now and then.

More powerfull Apple-TV set-top box was expected last year when Apple had 64-bit custom processor with better graphics support. Whole idea of Homekit in-line to be center of home hub is not only to connect and control home appliances, lights, security, gadgets, streaming video but also becomes decent gaming platform. It seems time is right for 2015 fall line up for updated Apple-Tv
I suspect a new AppleTV is closer to summer than fall ... Tied into a major push of HomeKit accessories -- with the AppleTV as the monitor/controller hub ... and a few, initial, blockbuster games!
Like some of you I don't see an Apple set top. Too many sizes to consider and upgrades don't occur as often. Plus a box can connect to all TV sets made in the last few years to sell content. A revamped Apple TV Box already has my money.
I like the idea of a stick but I am not sure that's the direction Apple will go. One thing a stick does not do is advertise its presence. Everything Apple is made to be seen and to create an invisible service (device) doesn't seem Applesque, to me. On the other hand - a larger visible box with increased functionality (gaming) will inevitably cost more so I just don't know.
The thing about a stick is it works well mechanically because it just plugs in and stays there. Great for mounting TVs on the wall. The term set-top-box has been looking for a replacement for several years now because you can't really put anything on top of a TV. ?TV just isn't the right form factor in my opinion.
I've never used a stick. Does the remote still work well even though it is not in the line of sight?

Exactly. Add in USB 3 storage (I actually doubt Apple will do this but I can wish) and a user can have a movie library, a home control center, a Game Center, etc.
I get an always-on device like Airport/AppleTV as a connected-home server but I don't see Siri as the primary interface. Am I meant to shout downstairs to open the bedroom curtains?
AppleTV hardware should be added to Airport devices along with; UFB/VDSL modem, iCloud/iTunes local caching & delivery to an official AirPlay dongle or branded set. Control? A home screen/watch App.
Hopefully the next Apple TV adds support for 4K TVs.

And app versions for iPhone apps that already exist i.e. Amazon Prime. In other words open it already.
Apple has to accept the fact the iTunes video is never going to compete against Netflix , Amazon, Hulu etc.

And? An ?TV hockey puck isn't something you carry/wear either. That said I don't think Apple is doing a TV set either mostly because people don't want smart TVs. They want dumb TVs and smart boxes/sticks.
Well they certainly don't want a watch as the market research has pointed to as well as the Android failures point to.
Apple has a lot of convincing to do.
BTW Smart TVs as selling very well these days as in addition many are 4K.

Having owned an Apple TV for years -- and comparing it to a recently purchased Samsung Smart TV replete with quad core, STB intercept, voice activated, point and click, sophisticated program guides -- I can't envision what Apple might do to top Samsung in the smart TV space. SJ's claim to to crack television has been usurped by Samsung.
One area I find lacking is security. I won't link the Samsung TV to my Mac whereas I have no hesitation linking my Mac to Apple TV.
So i hear all about 4k and i would like to see it available on the ATV but can the current infrastructure even support streaming 4k? I have decently fast internet and every once and a while i get buffering or the resolution drops for a few seconds.
Both Amazon Prime and Netflix currently support UHD (4K). I just finished both Mozart in the Jungle and Transparent (Best Comedy Golden Globe winner) - both Amazon produced shows. The quality is excellent. And the content superb.
