UK banks RBS & NatWest become first in country to allow Touch ID logins

In an industry first, RBS and NatWest will be the inaugural apps in the U.K. to add Touch ID support to their iPhone apps, allowing users to securely log into their accounts with the use of their fingertip.

While banks and financial institutions in other countries around the world have been adding Touch ID support since iOS 8 debuted last fall, that hasn't been the case in the U.K. But that's now changed, according to the BBC, which noted the support from RBS and NatWest this week.

With the new updates, users can enable Touch ID logins for quicker access to their account. Three failed logins will require customers to manually enter their passcode.

Some of the more advanced features of the apps, including money transfers, will require additional verification beyond the Touch ID login.

Touch ID support is available on the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and iPhone 5s, as well as the latest iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3. The banks estimate that about 880,000 of their customers use their mobile banking apps on iPhones with Touch ID support.

"There has been a revolution in banking, as more and more of our customers are using digital technology to bank with us," said Stuart Haire, managing director with RBS and NatWest Direct Bank. "Adding Touch ID to our mobile banking app makes it even easier and more convenient for customers to manage their finances on the move and directly responds to their requests."

The Royal Bank of Scotland took over the National Westminster Bank Plc., or NatWest, in 2000. NatWest is the largest retail and commercial bank in the U.K.

    Big frigging deal.

Anyone can incorporate Touch ID into their apps; that's nothing to do with Apple Pay.

Let's see Apple get their ass into gear and actually bring Apple Pay to the rest of the world, something which they distinctly failed to do with iTunes Radio.

So banks are nothing to do with Apple Pay?

Please spare us your imbecilic outbursts.

Banking apps are nothing to do with ?Pay, no.

And there's no evidence that these banks are obstructing ?Pay's launch in the UK in any way.

And the thread is not about ?Pay, much less iTunes freaking Radio.

Apple Pay wasn't even mentioned in this topic. It is news for those that are in the UK that can now use TouchID in their Bank App!

I'm sure Apple is working on Apple Pay for other countries, but it's not a simple, quick thing to do and had nothing to do with the topic at hand.

The service has barely been out for a quarter and is still in its explosive growth phase in the US.

Get off their asses? Apple execs no doubt work harder in a single day than you've managed to do your entire hateful life. Once again, you're attempting to hijack and destroy a thread with unrelated, pathetically predictable, and laughably baseless attacks.

Hopefully this will kickstart some of the banks with apps that are, well apps that are almost amateur in nature, to bring out native apps. I won't hold my breath, but it'd certainly be nice.

It's one small step but welcome anyway.
The ApplePay rollout is going to be very long term since NFC terminals are still quite rare.

Westpac (one of Australia's larger banks) introduced this recently, but I don't recall a story about it. It's not really that newsworthy, it doesn't mean anything other than developers being able to use the TouchID APIs, which they've been able to do for some time now.

I am not stupid bastard, stupid maybe ... but I stand corrected, it's been a while. After reading what you say, for some reason Marian Faithful comes to mind.
