eMac why?

Is it just me or has apple made a bad move with the eMac. In itself its self the spec are as good as the iMacs but with a CRT rather than a LCD. Which is fine but it must of cost loads of money to develop for small market in education. Surely the best thing for apple to do is be argressive on the education market and make there iMacs/iBook cheaper or better yet all the range. So loads of kids/students would see how cool macs where. Comments please.

Probably not too much to develop. It's the iMac forrm factor, it's a little less deep, it's a little wider and taller, and I think the skin is made of aluminum or something.

There's no significant costs for miniatureziation of components, like the G4 iMac needs. They fit a LOT of stuff into the little base of that thing.

I wonder ikf you can overclock an eMac

The development costs for the eMac have a blip on the radar the same size as a Stealth Bomber. It's a repackaged iMac, in fact it could be the long rumored 17" iMac that was developed so they had nothing to lose by redubbing it the eMac and trying to sell a lower price point to the education market.

Education is a big market for Apple. The consensus seems to be that education requested a computer like this -- more durable than the iMac, and that educators were reluctant to buy iMacs for the schools. It was probably a worthwhile investment to develop it to improve their position in education.

Of course the eMac is the RIGHT thing to do. Education is important you simply MUST have a presence there. Apple knows that not only will parents be more likely to purchase a Mac at home but they can leverage the Powerschool purchase with more Macs in the School Dist. It's not a competitor to the iMac because you simply cannot by the eMac at $999 only Education facilities can and there may be a minimum purchase attached. Think about it. OSX Server>>>>eMac>>>>>Desk top Remote>>>>Powerschool. It's all coming together.

of cousre education is important, but why don't you price the imacs/ibooks at a lower price? Maybe even @ cost so loads of schools buy the and the kids ask thier parents for those cool computers @ school.

iBooks are already competitely priced for their market. I think sometimes even the Mac Vets are predisposed to complaining about Apple pricing. I'm not too impressed with many of the PC notebooks. The iMac could be lower but LCD's have risen in price and that does affect Apple. It's still very affordable for the typical family but schools need robust machines and the eMac fits most of those needs. IMO of course

Right, the eMac offers two things the lcd iMac does not: price and durability. The lcd iMac at $1349 for education is too high.Also the Lcd screen with the swing arm is just asking to be broken. Eventually the CRT iMac will be dropped when the Emac reaches a slightly lower price point (@$800). This thing was not expensive to design. Im sure the motherboard is very similar to the LCD iMac, and the design is very similar to the original iMac. Most likely it is the rumored 17inch iMac, just with a different name.

Obviously they don't lower the iMac's price because the LCDs are too much money right now. You think if they could have lowered the price they wouldn't? That's exactly why they raised the prices. And the iBook's price is fine.

Education is important. But all the little brat kids who are in K-12 have parents with fat pocketbooks that they can dig right into for a new Mac. Or at least generally, they do. And Apple can't just give a "selective" discount for K-12 students... they'd lose millions of dollars, because that's one of their target markets.
