Hello from WWDC!

Well, I arrived in San Jose this afternoon at 2:00 pm (local). I'm at the convention center now, and picked up my conference badge and stuff. They're already got the AirPort network setup, so here I am!

I got the promised free "CD" of InstallAnywhere in my bag. Except, the CD isn't made of plastic, it's made of...

CHOCOLATE!!!

I heard someone joke that it was a new flavour of Cocoa. We get the serial number and instructions on how to actually get the software along with it. Unfortunately, I left my digital camera at home so I can't show you guys. Sorry!

Other little tidbits:
  • the "to be announced" sessions don't appear to be anything too special. My detailed session brochure just lists the usual sessions in them.

they're not giving out sweatshirts in the bag this year! (although we still get a new t-shirt)

the bag this year is different from 2000, and 2001. It doesn't have the "backpack" straps anymore, and isn't quite as flashy (ie: no coloured text)

I'm off to find some food. I'll drop by the messageboard again tomorrow.

How much does it cost for a college student to go to WWDC?

Do they get free stuff too?!

Do they have to be a CS major?

I'm not sure, but I know my school gives out scholarships to go.... They always go to CS students, of course, but I doubt you have to be a CS major to attend

Look at teh Apple website. Regular prices are $$$$$ -- I believe everyone who goes gets what is described.

Early registration is about $1200, and there is no direct student discount, but I think registered student developers get a slight discount. It's still in multiples of hundreds of dollars, and it doesn't include accomodations

I applied for, and received the WWDC Student Scholarship, which pays for the conference pass (worth about US$1200 - $1600). This is why I've been able to attend WWDC for the past 2 years (this is my third). However, you still have to pay for accommodations and transportation, though Apple does help you book a room at a discounted rate (ie: they book all the students as one big group from Apple to lower the rates).

Yes, the student get the same stuff as anyone else attending the conference. The only difference is in stuff that are offered as an incentive to register. For example, Apple offered leather jackets to people who registered by a certain time last year, but the students didn't get that.

When the ADC Student Program was initially formed, you did need to be a CS or CE major in order to join the program. You have to be an ADC Student Member for apply for the scholarship. However, that restriction has been dropped now, so you only have to be a college/university student.

Hey guys. I'm here. Sorry I couldn't give you guys any coverage on the keynote. AirPort access is restricted to the non-session rooms (generally).

Everyone who attended received a six CD set with Jaguar on it. Very exciting stuff! However, I do take my NDA seriously, so don't ask me to image it for you! Sorry!

I played with it down at the Mac OS X lab. The zoom function for CloseView is very smooth. And, you can essentially zoom in forever (it'll let you hold onto the zoom in key combo and continually zoom in forever).

Well, I gotta run. I'll drop by again later.

Well, it's hard to find time during the conference to tell you guys much (I don't have net access in my hotel room). But, I'll try to clear up the many misconceptions I've read around here (especially regarding Quartz Extreme) when I get back to Calgary on Sunday.
