And I don't think the security guards were union. As for the drivers, why shouldn't they ask for more money? They are more actively a part of the business than shareholders are.
Corporations seem to grapple with core competencies. Do you want your IT in-house or outsourced? Advantages to either. Security guards? I'd prefer company-hired guards, but whatever.

Contractor charges will contain all of the additional costs of an employee over and above the salary. Apple may end up paying more, since security contracting firms will have certain efficiencies available to them.
But nevertheless, a good thing. Direct employment is almost always better for lower-wage employees than contracting, and what is good for the employees is good for Apple.
