In OS 9 you can drag something on to a folder and the folder will open. I think that's what spring loaded folders are.

In pre- Mac OS X systems (until 10.2 of course), you could drag an item on top of a folder and if you left it hanging over the folder for long enough, the folder would open to reveal its contents. You could do this with the folders inside this one as well. Thus you could quickly take file from high up in your drive directory and place it several levels down. You could move it down or into a different path more quickly than dragging it way down one level at a time, or going to the trouble of opening two windows to see both the original file and its destination. It's a time saver, nothing that you couldn't do before the long way.

See how the folders "spring" open when you drag over them? THAT, my friend, is a spring-loaded folder.

Nothing more annoying than dragging something to a folder in X, hitting the space bar and seeing nothing happen.
