Mother shows up IT dude

The NYC BOE is implementing this budgeting software called Galaxy into the system. It has been nothing but problems. Last year when the initial tests were being done it was absolutely horrendous. Since, they have "revamped" it and released the 2nd version.

It only runs on PCs though. This sucks because as you would guess the NYC BOE is still full of macs. It's especially bad for my mother's district which is 100% mac. So to solve this problem the BOE bought a Dell Latitude for every school in then district to use this budget software. The reason they give for it not working on the mac is that it uses javascript.

Today they received the shipment and an employee of Galaxy did a seminar on how to use it. My mother is probably the most tech savvy out of the people who were there. Apparantly the guy assumed my mom would be a tech-idiot and started bloating all dumb things like do you know how to use a trackpad? My mom said yes she owns a Powerbook G4. Then he went into the typical mac spiel. Macs can't use multiple programs so it wouldn't work well. My mother responded by saying perhaps if you're using System 6 and are stuck in the 80s because I've been running multiple programs for years. Then the guy said there was no way to switch between apps on a mac because there was no taskbar. So my mother said I guess you have never heard of the application switcher/menu or OS X's dock.

Then the guy tried to explain that it was possible to run it on a mac but you would need something called Virtual PC, do you know what that is? and my mother said yes I own it. Then he said she would probably have to upgrade her ram because it requires a lot of ram. She said she doubted considering she has 1GB of RAM. The guy said no that's your hard disk space. And she responded no my hard drive is 30GB in the laptop and I have 140GB at home.

At that point he just said yea I guess you wouldn't have much of a problem and shut up.

May not seem too funny to you but if you have ever dealt with guys that do tech in schools you'll know exactly why its so funny. I'm proud.

On a side note, the new dell laptop deals have apparantly led to rumors that the NYC BOE may be in negotiations for a citywide Dell contract

I would have loved to have been there. I love the RAM line... "that's your hard drive"...

    Classic stuff.

BTW Spart, what the hell is up with the replying man?! Thought we had you straightened out in that other thread!!

Really though, you have the post directly beneath applenut's, and you have to quote his entire long post in yours?

Come on man, clean it up a little.

Yeah there is this IT ******* where I work... He scoffed when I told a coworker that I went Mac some time ago. He said something about how the OS wasn't as advanced as windows, so I said, "you haven't seen the new OS have you?" To which he resonded,

    "yeah, it's based on linux."

"no, actually its based on the Mach microkernel.....Unix, fella"

    "mumble, mumble, same thing"

"call up Cupertino, and ask politely for the source code to OS X, then talk to me about linux"

He shakes his head and walks off.

Its really too bad that I work with these types of dense craps for my summer job

they all hate the macs here. Even after hours of pounding info into their heads that macs arent toys, but highly refined tools, they still dont listen.

Let me tell you, when reason and fact fail, just bust out the Ballmer video. it works every time

I hate computer tech people. Trying to tell me that the reason my system is so slow is because of the 15 feet of wire from my box to the wall? fscking idiots.

um, isn't anyone else wondering why this program won't run if it's Java?

if it was coded properly (long stretch i guess) you should be able to run it on macs no problem. that was kinda the point.

No I'm not. You all ever have to use WinNT 4? If you had you'd know that is fsckiing sucks on a network. I don't know why but they hang and slow down and stall and .... We use GroupsWise too and that hangs and stalls and sucks. The ditzy computer support chick tells me the office I'm in has ad hoc networking in my office and that's the "real" problem. Where I work you get in early for two reason 1) To get a parking space within a half mile of the door 2) To log into GroupWise early or it will take you 15 minutes at 8am.

All we get from computing support is "it's the wire from the computer to the switch".

one would think. we have tried everything. the mac tech people in our district office have tried for hours to get it to work any way possible but nothing.

and of course galaxy doesn't want to have anything to do with the mac even if all it means is a recompile or a few fixes in the code
