Apple Stores and EDU pricing (fran-look here)

OK, this was being discussed in a FH thread yesterday.... but i have another question that wasnt answered... actually this has to do with New Hampshire more then anything else, but whatever...



If i went to the Apple Store in NH (there IS on in NH right?) and showed my college ID, could I get the EDU pricing AND no taxes?



Also, would it be possible to CTO the computers? or retail versions only?

    If you went to the Apple Store in NH, you would pay no taxes. I also believe that they will give you the Educational pricing, provided that you have an ID.



    There is no sales tax on any product in NH.



    The store that's open now is at the Rockingham Mall in Salem, NH. They might be able to CTO your machine- I'd call ahead and try and order it before driving from NY to get it, though.

    SWEET... maybe after I get my ID @ orientation (23-26th I think--june (when is MWNY?) ) i'll go up that tuesday... dunno tho... that would mean I would ahve to make a descision on iBook or TiBook by then <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />

    Paul. Wait wait wait. The stores do not do CTO. You can up the RAM or ad an Airport card, but that is it. You can't configure the Mac like you can with the online store.

    No CTO's at the retail stores. They willjust direct you to a computer and you will then CTO through the online Apple Store. Question...if you can get free shipping online and still no tax...why go to the retail store?

    1.) many places online have free shipping and no tax: ie: outpost

    2.) technically the store should require some form of ID of residence if you don't live there. If you buy in cash it probably won't be a problem but if you pay by credit card they may charge you NY State tax. Perhaps someone can clarify this

    About 2 months ago I asked about edu pricing at an Apple store, they said they were not offering edu prices at the retail stores as of yet.



    Has this changed?

    Is EDU pricing still about $50 off a system? They need to make that a bit better for students.... imho

    When you are paying thousands of dollars for a computer, it seems as though the discount isn't steep enough, especially for students.



    The 667 PB G4 retails for $2,499, edu price is $2.349. Not bad... i guess <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

    It's still about $50 on the consumer models (altho you can sometimes get it cheaper at a college bookstore, ie my school is iBooks for $75 off). The discount on the pro models is a little better. I got $150 off of the lowend powerbook from the online store, and would have gotten $200 off if I had waited and bought it at my schools bookstore.

    If I recall correctly, if you apply for financing through Apple, it is financed differently for students than for non-edu customers. This, I believe, adds up to more savings.

    I know there was talk about this becasue people from MA always go over to NH to get big stuff tax free. There was talk of some laws that would charge tax of the residence state, but I don't know how far that got. As far as I know even with a credit card they won't charge tax. I bought my iMac from CompUSA in Nashua a few years ago, and they didn't charge tax.

    hmmm if i can *add* ram.... can i also *subtract* ram? IE get like 128 ram instead of 256 and save a few $? all i really wanted to do was get the airport installed so i wouldnt have to open it up, so whatever... I'm probably going to get a big ext. hd so that doesnt really bother me, although it would be nice to have a 60GB drive in there. Will I still be eligiable for the Apple promos such as the Airport Base Station $100 off? and the firfly drive for free?



    I want to go to the retail store so I have a place to bring it if things get really hairy and so i can get EDU pricing and no taxes... although the mail order places have some really good deals... <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> you still ahve to pay taxes @ the online apple store <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />



    paying cash probably wont be a problem for me if it means no tax... so that doesnt really bother me.

    You guys don't understand. In NH, we have big malls all over the place, but mainly RIGHT ON THE BORDER. By that, I mean that the mall near me is literally across the street from Massachusetts. People from NH and Maine always skip across the border to pay for stuff without paying tax. Car dealers, furniture stores, computer shops, fireworks dealers, etc. all do very well in NH as a result.



    Even if you pay with a credit card, you do NOT PAY TAX! If you buy something in NH, unless it's energy, you do not pay any state tax under any circumstances. I just want to clear that up.



    I also believe that I have seen the Apple Store carry certain 'CTO' models. Like if you want a 60 GB HD, I'm fairly sure they have them prebuilt that way for people who want them. Limited qualities? Perhaps, but I still think they have them. As for the RAM, I'm not sure they'll take it out for you, but I do know they install it on site. It's generally no problem.

    I know for a FACT that you do get edu pricing on hardware purchases in the the retail stores. Too bad I live no where near NH. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

    torifile: Could you provide the source/basis for your factual statement? Have you bought edu-priced hardware at an Apple retail store? Do you work at one? I've always been told that you had to go to the online store to get educational pricing. I'd love to get my next Mac at the store instead of waiting for FedEx.

    But anyway, thanks for the info about all this Fran, I am looking at jobs in NH, but didn't know about the sales tax thing. That's one more point for New Hampshire!

    BTW, no income tax in NH either.

    I'm responding to a few of you all at once here:



    What was true 2 months ago has now changed. Take my word for it, I am closely connected to the Retail Stores and they do NOW give you educational discounts. You must show a student ID or prove you work for a school with paystub or employee ID. True, this discount is only about $50, but it IS something.



    As for "removing" RAM to save money; you can't do that. The machines are configured to sell at the price you see at the Store. If you upgrade RAM, and the base 128 chip needs to be removed (say to get an iBook with two 256 chips for 512 total) you do NOT get a credit. You get your new iBook with 512MB RAM and an extra 128 chip handed to you loose. Of course, if you do a Configure-to-order via the online store, this does not happen.
