Purchasing Question

I need a computer for college. Should I get a Ti800 now, or wait until early August, the latest I could possibly get it? I am concerned about Apple adding bluetooth, better wireless, and having to pay for the 10.2 upgrade. On the other hand, there are some nice offers right now. What would you do?

    Welcome to AppleInsider.

Future Hardware is for speculation about what products Apple has in the pipeline, so I'm moving this to General Discussion, which is sort of a catch-all for Apple related discussion.

To answer your question: There's no harm in waiting as long as you can to purchase a computer, since they do tend to get better, but given that the TiBook was just updated I'm not expecting any major changes for another 6 months or so. Bluetooth and AirPort can be added to the current model (at least, eventually) and the academic price for 10.2 should be attractive - about $20, worst case. The major drawback to waiting is that Apple has a long record of delays shipping new PowerBook models, so if you postpone until the last minute you might find yourself getting through midterms with no 'Book.

So, if you can wait, wait. However, if you want a computer now, or if you want to make sure you have a computer at the start of next semester, by all means get the current TiBook. It can do everything you list, and it's a sweet machine. It should tide you over nicely.

yeah, pretty much what Amorph said.

i could see a video card update in the future as a side update. on the whole, i would say wait as long as possible, if you won't spend it.

If I was in your position, I'd get it now. An 800MHz G4 PowerBook is nothing to sneeze at. You get a Combo Drive, nice graphics, high resolution screen, USB, Firewire, Ethernet, etc.

They just tweaked them recently, right? I can't imagine ANOTHER PowerBook revision before August.

Get it now (800 is a nice even number... ) and get it all configured, tweaked and personalized to your liking...and enjoy it for the summer!

That's what I would do, given the circumstances and recent PowerBook update. Had they not revved the PowerBook recently, THEN it would be a tougher decision.

Get the current Ti. An 800MHz G4 is great, great screen, pretty good graphics, Combo, and everything else you could want (except for Bluetooth) and since they just came out recently, there shouldn't be an update anytime soon.

by the way Amorph, purchasing advice goes in Genius Bar now.

He has a good point about Jaguar tho... If we buy a new computer now, will we have to bay ~$50 for the OS update in 2 months? <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> :/

I know I'd rather spend a few more months enjoying my computer rather than waiting for Jaguar.

Great post pscates. I agree with everything you've said.

Also, my posting the same points again would be pretty unnecessary.

    Right EmAn???

Anyway, they're right. Great time to buy the PowerBook. My 667 is as fast as hell, I can only imagine how nice the 800s are.
