Drake shows up at Coachella wearing an Apple Watch, posts proof to Instagram

Just hours before Apple Watch preorders are scheduled to go live on the Online Apple Store, rap star Drake posted to Instagram a picture of himself wearing the hotly anticipated device at this year's Coachella Valley Arts and Music Festival.

Drake in a posh foyer feeding a lioness milk; a soccer ball sitting on stacks of Benjamins; October's Very Own sitting on a wall at Coachella, wearing a yellow gold Apple Watch Edition with red strap to match his all-red OVO-branded sweats, gazing wistfully out into nothing; all photos from Drake's "champagnepapi" Instagram account, a chronicling of the rap star's fantastic life, the most recent being his Apple Watch shot posted late Thursday night.

Drake is the latest high profile celebrity to be afforded the chance to wear -- and presumably spend thousands of dollars on -- an Apple Watch before the general public. Earlier this week Pharrell Williams was seen on NBC's "The Voice" sporting a similar Edition model before he, like Drake, uploaded a first look at Watch to Instagram.

Apple is pushing hard to ramp up Apple Watch visibility as the product nears release, orchestrating a multi-pronged campaign involving both mainstream media and guerrilla advertising. A report on Thursday estimated Apple has spent some $38 million since its March 9 "Spring Forward" event on television ads alone, buying up space during popular shows and sporting events for maximum exposure. According to market research firm iSpot.tv, Apple's "Watch Reimagined" spot showed up more than 300 times over the past month.

Apple Watch goes up for preorder on Friday at 12:01 a.m. Pacific, the same day brick-and-mortar Apple Stores around the world open their doors to customer try-on appointments. Photos and video from those sessions have already made their way to the Web.

Kids, this is Beats-style marketing in action. Many of you thought the reason Apple purchased Beats was just for the headphones; that's just silly! How do you think Beats headphones became so popular? Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine put together a world-class marketing team, specialised in youth marketing. That's why Beats did almost a billion dollars in sales before the Apple deal.

Marketing team + music industry cred + streaming service + headphones = the reason Apple bought Beats.

Odd presumption. He will have been given it for free and maybe even paid to wear/promote it.

No.  Actually its insanely smart.  Beats marketing with Apple products, that are actually nicely designed, and great tech products, is genius.  Hell, Microsoft, and Samsung both spend 2 to 3 times more than Apple on advertising there products.  I like how Apple isn't just simply throwing more, and more money at advertising, but rather being more strategic.  Its what there good at, and what Apple has always done.

So that's what the edition one is for. They must be gifting them to celebrities who wouldn't likely turn down a $10k+ gift and just wearing them is direct advertising to hundreds of thousands of their social media followers. Cheap advertising too as they only cost Apple ~$2000. These are all musicians so it seems likely Iovine had something to do with this:

"What isn't a surprise is that Apple wants to recreate some of this same success, and it's using Beats CEO Jimmy Iovine's connections with musicians to strike more deals, according to a new report from the New York Post, citing its own "music industry spies."

Since Iovine is already friends with musicians like Pharrell, Nicki Minaj, and Gwen Stefani, Iovine is reportedly now in "fresh talks with artists about doing exclusives.""

And here was innocent ol' me thinking Apple gave it to him and paid him to wear it and to then advertise the fact.

Samsung is paying close attention to what Apple is doing and will be copying it fast! That is sad!

What you be 99.9999999999999% certain about is not one of the "famous" people will be texting or tweeting how much they love their Samsung Gear from an Apple Watch.

I'm impressed. This is still all rather subtle marketing out in the world of people who don't read Apple blogs, but they're doing a good job of making sure the watch is seen out in the world on NON-TECH people first.
