Who's better, AppleInsider or MacNN?

Who do you think is better, smarter people, better topics etc... MacNN or AppleInsider?

I used to be from AI, but migrated here after the long months of waiting for AI to come back. Basically I've stuck. Anyone else done the same?

I personally think that AI has more smart people, the threads are sometimes more interesting.. and it's a lot cooler/more community based. I've also not truly gone back to AI because I think it's kind hard to be part of the community again.. although I am member 12 or so I still lurk every now and then though.

Now this thread(s) is obviously going to have lots of biased opinions.. but there's bound to be people from both forums.. or at least someone who can take an analytical view to it.

(I'd make this a poll but AI doesn't have them... hmm.. one down for AI)

Oh, and at least provide a small.. or long reason if you're going to say one forum sucks.

If you accept the generalized notion that a group of people will have an approximate percentage of idiots, jerks, and intelligence people, and some others that I missed... then since MacNN has more members, there is a higher potential for you to run into those different types.

AI to me has a much smaller group of people that are always posting. Like, I feel like I know those people, and expect things from them in a sense. AI is more "family oriented" to me. God I can't believe I just said that...

Ditto what M3D Jack said, but I'll expand on it.

It would seem that the rate of growth of intelligent posters at MacNN is much lower than the rate newbies join there. Thusly, NN has a significantly high ratio (and, yes, a growing ratio) of trolls, n00bs, zealots, liars, etc. to intelligent posters. Furthermore, because MacNN has just a much larger member base, it often seems that NN has fewer intelligent members than AppleInsider has, but it's actually just MacNN's lower ratio of them. AppleInsider may have a smaller number of intelligent posters, but the ratio to trolls, etc. is significantly higher. In fact, can't remember the last real troll here. There was Mastergating a while back, but he was just one of Macintosh's aliases.

That's why I spend more time at AppleInsider.

It seems that whenever I'm in MacNN's OSX forums, for example, there are a dozen threads with topics like "I was using root and I ****ed up my hard drive. HELP!!" and "Click here if you hate Aqua" and "Windows XP rips off Mac OS X... again!" Franky, I get sick of the drivel.

Plus, AppleInsider doesn't have Kelly Hogan. ::shudder::[code]My vote:

    [ ] MacNN

    [X] AppleInsider</pre><hr></blockquote>

Then, if you consider MacOSX.com... sheesh!! They're even lower on the food chain.

Note: This is a mostly unbiased opinion. Over at MacNN I have 2000 posts. I joined AI in Aug 99 (rejoined in Nov 01) and I joined MacNN in Sep 00. So, I've had quite a bit of time to lurk and post at both.

Note 2: I try to steer clear of the Future Hardware forums here like it's some king of ugly zit. I mean, seriously, those guys are nuts. I suppose the majority of AI's n00bs, zealots, and liars hang around there.

MacNet2.com is lowest on the foodchain, I'd wager.

Definitely AI. Been here "officially" since January of 2000 (wow...when I say it like THAT...eek...) and it has a great bunch of people here.

We've survived a couple of major blackouts, numerous comings and goings, restructuring, new mods, new designs, active chats, etc. I was even voted AI Member of the Year or something like that once (if you can believe that!), which I thought was a scream!

Feel like I have a lot good buddies here, and even the people I have arguments or disagreements with aren't jerks about it or go out of their way to be mean or dickheaded. Everyone's cool and contributes in their own way.

On top of all that, I've LEARNED a lot. About Apple history in general, as well as more technical-oriented things (video cards, bus speeds, OS X stuff, lingo, stuff about chips, cooling, power consumption, etc. I'm a LOT smarter Mac user than I was this time 2-3 years ago, that's for sure.

A good bunch of people hang out here. I like it here. Feels like "home", digitally speaking of course...

Maybe I will get booed out of here for this, but if you are looking for the most well heeled, and by far the smartest group of Mac users around, then you need to head on over to Arstechnica's <a href="http://arstechnica.infopop.net/OpenTopic/page?a=cfrm&s=50009562"; target="_blank">OpenForum</a>.

Now, a word of advice, do not go into the Battlefront until you really know what you are talking about, because you will not like the welcoming committee. Head straight on into the <a href="http://arstechnica.infopop.net/OpenTopic/page?a=frm&s=50009562&f=8300945231"; target="_blank">Macintoshian Achaia</a> and make yourself at home. Check any attitude at the door, and you will find that the people there generally know what the **** is up.

Anyway, after having lurked the Mac intarweb for many years, I have to say that they are bar none the best group to be associated with.

EDIT: and of course my utter and complete lack of typing skills probably speaks volumes about those guys :o

    I'd rank'em

    AI

    Ars

    MacNN

AI was strong for quite a while and when they were down many of us went to other boards for awhile. When AI came up many have not returned for whatever reasons.

    Based on the criteria given:

I can not fathom how you could rank AI ahead of Ars. I mean, didn't Ars more or less take all of the smarter posters the last time AI went down? It seems that way to me, and quick scan of both forums seems to reinforce my case.

Of course, if you have ever had the misfortune of stumbling into the Battlefront, then I can maybe see your point....maybe.

Like this moron. I'd say AI is generally more substantial, but there are irritants floating around here as well. The psychos at MacNN are mostly easily avoided.

I will say I enjoy the Lounge at MacNN because 1 out of 5 topics is interesting. AppleOutsider often is stale by comparison.

I've got to say that they people here at AI seem to be more level-headed and mature about the postings. All the other places that i've checked out always seem to have on problem, everyone wants to get in a pissing contest about their systems and opinions. Here, people are usually almost modest about what they have, and respect others opinions. When you hear someone say, I just bought a new "whatever system" from apple.com and it should be here soon. People here don't come back and say, well, you should have went here, or you should have bought this or that. Not what you got. Thats not saying that we don't argue, but it's more like a debate rather than a sibling brat fight. =)

And every question i've had here, was answered, and the answers were correct. Not just BS. And no one ever tries to go out of their way to make someone look like a moron based upon the simplicity of their question. They just say, here's the answer.

So for only being here a month, and for putting up with all my newbie mac questions, i'd like to thank you all. From a PC convert.

People will like what they like, but I'd rather not promote any fragmentation (AI and MacNN are, after all, part of the same network -- along with Xicons and the rest) or any animosity between the two communities.

Personally, I think they're different communities that focus on different things, and being a member of one doesn't preclude being a member of the other -- and that's the way it should be.

People use what they use, but this isn't especially constructive. I'm glad that people feel so strongly about -any- of the sites on our network, but rating one against the other is pretty pointless. In case anyone cared, I also locked the same thread at MacNN for the same reason.
