And NASDAQ closed above 5000 at one point too...1999 was a year where 21 year olds bough Z3s, pinball machines and lush condos.

applenut, the entire PC industry except for (surprise) Dell expects to lose ground.

You should be asking yourself the same question you asked Shanny.

1.) this is hardly because the pc industry is in a slump. that doesn't make your pro line sales drop by 40%. if anything the consumer side should see the biggest drop. it's because they haven't done anything significant to them since august 1999.

2.) never asked him a question

It's hard to be satisfied when a machine with these specs:

    ? 933MHz PowerPC G4

    ? 512MB SDRAM - 1 DIMM

    ? 80GB Ultra ATA drive

    ? CD-RW drive

    ? NVIDIA GeForce4 MX dual

    ? 56K internal modem

    ? Apple Pro Speakers

    ? Apple Pro Keyboard - U.S. English

    ? Mac OS - U.S. English

    costs: $2,358.00

Ah, are you crazy? Hardware is essential for Apple's survival. Not only does most of Apple's revenue come from hardware sales, but one of the main reasons why Macs work better than PCs is because their hardware and software is better integrated. When writing the Mac OS, Apple doesn't have to worry about supporting the millions of different hardware devices available for the PC. They have a far fewer drivers to write because they control their own hardware base, and they can concentrate on more important things like improving usability and speed. No need for a device manager. No need to reinstall drivers. The Mac just works. Wintel?s poor hardware integration is why Microsoft has failed to offer things that have been available on the Mac for years like easy networking and printing. Macs finally have true plug and play with OS X, but Windows definitely has a ways to go. Face it. Superior hardware and software integration is what makes a Mac a Mac. Without Apple hardware you have a PC. Besides, don?t you think Apple would have to increase their market share a lot before they could competing with Microsoft as a pure software vendor. Just because the Microsoft model has managed to capture a 95% market share doesn?t mean it?s a good model. Just use Windows if you don?t believe me.

The configuration I would buy for the 933 is $1970 from Apple with no discount.

Also, you're paying for hardware and software R&D PC companies don't need to worry about. HP's Athlon based desktops are using off the shelf nForce boards for example.

pessimistic? hoping they fail? please. read more closely if that's what you believe I think.

I'm quite optimistic about Apple's upcoming products. In fact, QT 6 with MPEG 4 streaming and QT Broadcaster have me more optimistic than ever.

the 933 is a crap machine that is outdated and way overpriced. just because Motorola can't advance the processor at acceptable rates doesn't mean that they should still charge for the processor speeds as if they were amazing.

I'd rather a dual 800 at that price point and I'm sure many others would as well. they don't even give you that option.

[quote]As opposed to showing up every day to be an ass like you do?

he he. I was going to write that in but I figured you would be quick enough to come back with it.

    Very predictable

[quote]And you don't think that statistic includes enterprise sales?

1.) Apple hasn't even gone after the enterprise market until recently

2.) those sales are included. this isn't some demographic breakdown. it's total sales in a quarter of the product line

On the other hand the Apple model "hardware and software" has 1.5% market share and seems to always be on the verge of going out of business!!! So which do you think is the better business model??? Remember the clones? Apple had to pull the licenses because they were putting Apple out of business! The clone venders were producing hardware that was better and cheaper then Apple!!! EG: Power Computing,Motorola,Umax,Radius!!

Whoa. Some people here need to take a deep breath. Or two.

Doesn't anyone think the economy might have something to do with this?

Although disappointing, this isn't shocking news. (Didn't anyone get a clue from those millions of Apple executive stock sell-offs?) And everyone knows Apple's professional line is weak. Not totally abysmal, but quite weak. I know this. You know it. Apple knows this.

That's why they're about to introduce much better, brand new G4s in a month.

And (it's becoming incr. clear) Apple is belatedly but finally in the process of developing a new chip, very likely with IBM, which will be introduced in the next six to twelve months.

If neither of these (especially the second, for god's sake) spark sales of their professional lines, then Apple has a big, dramatic problem.

But all these Chicken Little routines at 10% less revenue than expected for one financial quarter are just... a bit sad.

Just a question. How does all of this personally affect you? You act like Apple's come into your house, killed your dog, ate your dinner and then charged you for it.

I work for a publishing company. We are 80% Macs. The top speed machine here is a 733, one of which sits on my desk right next to a gigahertz Dell. We still manage to get the papers out. Hell, a bunch of people are working on 400 MHz iMacs. I don't see anyone in this company saying that Apple's lack of processing power is ruining this product.

Now keep in mind, the above numbers are for this particular office only. It doesn't account for the rest of the offices across the country that publish magazines .

Yes, Apple should probably be better off in terms of sheer processor speed, but it's not hindering our production in any way, shape or form.

Compound the fact that IT spending is down across the board in our company. It's not because the majority of our Macs are a gigahertz behind, it's because companies, specifically mine, in this instance aren't spending the money.

So the next time you decide to act like you know better than I about what I think, maybe understand that you don't. Until you work in the industry, try to stop making it seem like you have a clue about what you're talking about.

    [edit]fixed crummy ubb code.
