This article seems to have misspelled absolutely every single instance of the term 'selfish dicks' with 'selfie sticks'...

No big deal, not as many people there to to be an issue.

Yes, very much so.  Because it is likely that an adjacent bystander at a crowded event will (eventually) rip the stupid stick out of their hands break it in half and then pummel them about the face and/or buttocks with the broken pieces.

And we wouldn't want that, now would we? ;-)

Yes, the user risks anal tearing when I ram the selfie stick up their ass!

There are plenty of good reasons why an organiser doesn't want these at their events, especially when there are a lot of people in attendance.

    1. They're a makeshift weapon. (A concern for things like Coachella.) Plus it's very easy to accidentally boop someone on the head/eye with one.

    2. At auditorium events the filming cameras are frequently positioned just above the audience, it's very easy for a person to get in the way with their arms or a selfie stick. A single monopole in an audience is easy to dodge, but an auditorium with many would be a constant struggle to get unobstructed angles.

    3. There are inconsiderate people out there who will push these in the view of others so they get the better shot of a fresh announcement.

    4. They're a bit obnoxious when used for "selfies"; in crowded areas they take up additional space and are an obstacle to passersby.

    5. Their level of social acceptance is variable, some people get quite offended when their personal space is invaded by a selfie stick (and will swat it out of the way, leading to conflict.)

Mostly these aren't problems that will change in time as people get used to seeing selfie sticks, the bulk of the problems have little to do with social acceptance. (Hence why monopods/unipods are also forbidden.)

No technology allowed in a pure tech event. Wow!

Selfie sticks help people who just can't get the right angle. Take this girl who spent ages trying to take the right shot:

    Selfie-takers get their comeuppance anyway:

I don't think the WWDC rules will be for people taking selfies but people filming the stage including ones with DSLRs using a monopod to get above people's heads. Perhaps Apple could setup a main camera and let people stream this feed on their own site live. They like to edit things out though.

I suggest they allow the sticks long enough to identify the idiots and eject them along with it.
