LAN Party with Macs

I'm having a LAN party with some friends in my garage, there's going to be about 15 of us total. Two of the people will be using my spare two macs (a G4 tower and Powerbook G4). I was wondering whether any of you guys/girls could answer some questions that I have:

1. I heard somewhere that you could install Q3A on the mac using the Windows CD by downloading the Mac executable. Does anyone know the instructions for this?

2. The same as the above question but with Quake 2.

3. I have a PowerMac 7100/80 with a G4/360 upgrade card, 92MB RAM, and a 750MB HD. It's not a very good computer but we were considering on using it as a dedicated Quake deathmatch server, or perhaps a Quake 2 server. How well would it perform with either of them?

4. How fast does Quake, Quake 2, and Q3A run in OS X with the carbon ports?

5. What is a good site where I can purchase AOE2 for Mac for a fairly cheap price?

Would Q3A 1.30 OS X be compatible with Windows Q3A 1.31? For example, if someone hosts on the Windows version, could I join with the mac even though it's .01 versions behind? The same goes for Quake 2, and Quake original.

Thanks.

    I'm not sure about the rest of the questions, so hopefully someone else can help as well. But you may be thinking of the wrong thing or heard the wrong information on the Q3A for Windows scenario. You may be speaking of Q3A Gold. I just bought it about 2 weeks ago, and it works great. The CD comes with the PC & Mac versions both on the same CD. Also, it comes with a copy of Q3 Team Arena. All that for $30 new in the store. eBay may have a few listed as well. If you get the chance send me an email, and i'll converse with more about it. Maybe I can tell you of another place to get it.

    yes, you can use the Windows cdrom. Install the MacQuakeIII update Version 1.30 and the QuakeIII testfix. Than copy from the Windows cdrom the Pak0.pk3 file to the baseq dir. QuakeIII is ready to rock!!

    Is that possible with Unreal Tournament as well? Or any other games?

    As has already been pointed out all you need is the pak0.pk3 file. It's large, and contains all the data for Arena. If you download the updates for Quake 3 on OS X, the 1.30 and 1.31 updates you should be able to play if you just copy thpak0.pk3 file into the baseq3 directory.

    <strong>

    I haven't had experience with Quake 3 so I don't know. I would imagine it is fairly similar.

    They should work fine as dedicated servers. I serve Quake 3 with a 500 MHz celereon and it only takes 20% of the CPU while hosting.

    <strong>

    Q3A runs great. Remember to use s_chunksize 4096 to imporve FPS slightly. I haven't used the Quake 1 or 2 OS X ports so I can't comment. But if your machine can handle Arena than it should also handle 1 and 2.

    <strong>

    5. What is a good site where I can purchase AOE2 for Mac for a fairly cheap price?</strong>

    Don't know.

    Nope all version must be consistent. But there is a 1.31 version of Quake 3 for OS X, it's beta 5 right now but works great.

    <strong>

    Thanks.

    Well, you basically just said it. Copy the files off the CD and download the mac executable. Put everything in the same relative position as they are on the PCs and it should work fine.

    [quote]<strong>2. The same as the above question but with Quake 2.</strong><hr></blockquote>

    Yes, but there is a problem. The OS X version of Q2 is based on the open source code which is version 3.21. The Mac OS 9 and Windows versions of the game are at 3.20. So, to play the windows players would need to get a 3.21 version of the executable which may or may not be easy to find.

    Trial and error...

    Quake III is cocoa and is also quite fast. quake 2 based on the PC code and lacks optimizations and runs about half as fast as it did in OS 9. quake 1 is also based on the PC code, but runs fast because it's quake 1.

    no idea, but it won't network with the windows version anyway. Blame Microsoft and their proprietary Direct Play network protocol for that.

    1.30 and 1.31 are not network compatible. You can get 1.31 for mac though, you just need to have 1.30 installed first. Try <a href="http://www.macgamefiles.com"; target="_blank">www.macgamefiles.com</a> for that.

    Alright guys, thanks for your answers. I have to borrow the Quake 2 CD tonight from a friend so I will try it out (for OS X). It's too bad that AOE2 doesn't work via multiplayer with Win versions, we'll have to put the macs to use on something else when everyone is playing that.

    The party is next week so I'll post pictures later on after i get them.

    The garage is fairly big, I need to clean it out this weekend and put all the boxes, etc, in the backyard under our porch. Afterwards, when I get access to some foldable tables, we can have about 6 computers per wall and then about 3 in the middle (which will probably be on some round plastic tables where we put the laptop ppl).

    So yeah, it's a little unusual but I think it'll work.

    [EDIT] Can anyone recommend any other games that might be playable for both Macs and PC's? These are the game so far (just for mac, we're going to be playing CS and TFC as well, too bad Sierra pulled the plug on Half Life):

    Starcraft: Broodwar

    Warcraft 2 + Warcraft 3

    Quake series

    Unreal Tournament

    We're going to leave the garage doors open, have some fans as well. It gets fairly cool after 10 so heat shouldn't be much of a problem.
