Bundles and other Blunders...

(bit of a risk starting a new thread but bear with it)

Remember when the egg iMacs were hot stuff? Remember they came with Bugs Life on DVD? (you don't? well trust me, they did). Some of the other retailers (macmall etc) sent it out with the Matrix. What ever happened to this type thing? I know that OTHER dealers bundle stuff with the computers... why not Apple direct?

Another question. If Apple starts bundling iMacs, iPods, iCams, etc together (even if they are NON Apple products) would that help consumer sales? I know to some degree they offer purchasing incentives but I'm talking about getting the "full monty" when you buy a new Mac. Where is the free packet of yuppie software like I got when I bought my first performa? The new ones seem so....sterile. The most exciting thing was an OS X worldbook. Whoo hoo, lemmie write home.

Thoughts about previous bundles or ideas for future bundles? Let the games begin.

Apple ought to offer a standard fee, say ten grand, for the rights any game it thinks is worth bundling. University CS students would have a whole new way to fund their educations, and there would be something worth doing with the Macs sitting in stores.

Right now "Otto Matic" is bundled with iBooks, and I presume iMacs. It's the latest in a string of titles by PangeaSoft.

The fact that I don't even get a word processor with my $3000 powerbook is a problem. When I bought my first powerbook (January 2000) I was appalled that I didn't even get a word processor. Not even AW. Add that to the fact that I was a switcher at the time and had no Mac software, I had to give pause to making the switch, especially since I knew (thought before I discovered the wonders of Carracho ) I would have to spend a couple hundred bucks extra to get a workable office suite.

That reminds me of yet another hurdle to switching. It's not just having to get new software for the platform, it's that there is NOTHING there for people to use right away. Apple should have a bundle for new Mac users. Office is a must in this bundle. I know it's expensive, but it would make the switching a lot easier. Are you listening, Apple???

TextEdit can be used as a word processor if you're really poor.

It's very bare bones though, so most people will want to buy Word or AppleWorks.

I don't know why AppleWorks is bundled on consumer machines and not pro ones? I guess Apple figures the kind of people who buy $3000 computers can also afford Microsoft Office. I'd still like to see AppleWorks bundled on ALL Macs.

How about a porn bundle that comes complete with a plastic pussy and 3 months free membership to several porn sites?

Throw that in with a new Powermac, and maybe Apple can start growing their market share.

    Great! Another niche market!

And what good is a 10% market share anyway if it's made up of porn heads?

What a great idea! Let's make the Power Macs incompatible with homosexuality. Wooo hooo! a plastic pussy, just what I've always wanted.

If Apple releases heterosexual-only sex toys, then they've gone the way of Microsoft. Although homosexuals hold a smaller percentage of the market share than heterosexuals, that shouldn't force them to be excluded. They should offer a wide range of sex toys which the customer gets to choose from.

Edit: AND you have to remember that some women buy computers too!

They would have gotten A Bug's Life regardless. It came inside the iMac box, not outside it, IIRC.

I think Apple should include Office with all new Macs, or at least offer a steep discount. Also, to go with this, Micro$oft should offer a cross-upgrade price on Office so that users can upgrade from the Windoze version.

Micro$oft would never offer a cross-platform upgrade discount, even if it invalidated your copy for one OS and validated it for another. They milk everything for all it's worth. That's why they're so rich. I think they still charge for Windows 3.1. Apple gives us System 7 (sans 7.6) for free.
