I won't use it. After Google analyzed the photo and video, Google would know who, where and what you did. No thanks.
Oh they already know a whole lot a little more won't hurt.
People would be freaked out if they knew the wealth of info Google has on us. I'd like to see you put your money where your mouth is and quit Google search altogether.
I know the purse string are pretty tight at Apple nowadays but how about maybe another 1 GB for free.
Sheesh.
So Google have just introduced something Amazon has been doing for ages. The also introduced Android Pay which Apple has been doing for ages, fingerprint support like Apple and offline maps that Here maps have been doing for ages. Oh, I almost forgot, the ability to download YouTube videos that third party apps have been doing for ages. I wonder where they get their ideas from? /s
No one knows what Google does with the information they harvest. I really doubt it stops at metadata. They could even do some face recognition to find out who you associate with. One thing I'm convinced of though, is that they do not sell the information they collect as so many here claim
BTW. I'm not at all convinced Google is the all-knowing company we think they are. They may have a lot of data and information about the world, what it does and how it works...
...but they can't seem to figure out what my personal interests are or even how old I am within 10 years or less. "I" am a mish-mash of everyone who uses my connected devices: My son, my wife, my kids, a friend or two and even friends of my kids.
Seeing as almost everything Google probably gathers is from the use of the internet or their connected services I doubt they can know as much about you or me as a company like Axiom does, nor verify it as well, yet that company works in the shadows for the most part and gets little notice.

I
I did stop using google years ago. Now my default is duck duck go. I don't know what's the big deal by switching. Google might be the best but I'm fine with duck duck go.
Different backend model too. Apple buys storage and bandwidth from Amazon and Microsoft, obviously paying them a profit. Google (and Facebook) develops their own dirt-cheap servers to let them do this.
So the huge data centers that Apple has is for what then?
kudos to you then.. On the other hand google has like 90% of the market in search so the occasional duck duck user does not change the big picture.. The know people upside down and inside out. Hell I think I might through in some pictures in that knowledge as well... especially when stingy apple gives me a mere 5 gigs of storage... I got a 64gb iphone.. what the hell are they thinking?
They can keep it. When something is free, you're not the customer. You're the product. I don't want Google looking at my personal photos, or anything else that I store on my Mac. I'll happily pay for iCloud.

If market share is so important to you, shouldn't you be using Samsung phone??
This is good. Pressure on Apple in this space is good. Apple needs to flip the switch on photos and make it work somehow because the whole system seems set up for exactly what Google is now offering. I'm just not sure how Apple can make it work financially. It _is_ a different model. Google wants you sucked into their space so they can confront you with constant ads. Apple wants you to love their hardware. Should be an interesting WWDC keynote after this announcement.
I have every digital picture I've ever taken across all my devices with no issues. iCloud Photo Library works great for me.

They don't understand actually what is going on. Apple paid other providers while it ramps up its own solutions. Once they pass a threshold those contracts end.

I think there's truth in that statement in respect to a general services company like Google. The problem for Apple (and maybe others like Dropbox) is that cloud storage is careening towards completely free. I see Apple eventually offering completely free cloud storage for current OSX/iOS users. Users like you who are happy to purchase it are I think in the minority.
The difference is that Apple doesn't make money by trolling through their customer's content and finding ways to market to them. I trust Apple far more than I ever would Google. Even Google's paid services are subject to their spying.
You're being very naive. They offer things for free because they have found ways to profit off of it. You're the product that they're selling to other companies.
1. Google knows a whole lot about a whole lot of people regardless of the occasional duck duck user. (I dont really like it but its just the way it is). A little more (photos) dont mind.
2. Apple offers surprisingly low free storage for this day and age. I am sure they can do a lot better and I am hoping they will especially after todays news.
if I was NSA, I would direct the department to be like Google just giving away free stuffs like phone services then American people will use it then can't live without it. We don't need USA Freedom Act, we only need Google.
So what's the catch? In what way are they allowed to use (or misuse, depending on your point of view) your photos, should you put them on their Google Photos?
Wow if they are going to do unlimited for free I'll even love them for a time. This will just be the 4th backup of all my pictures and video. I wonder if I can encrypt my photos and so google can not analysis them and figure out what kinds of ads to show me.
Do not think that google is not analyzing photos, they are and have the ability to determine with some level of certainty what is in a photo. I done searches on Google looking for a photo with a subject in it and google found one which were correct but the image title or name had nothing to do with the image itself. You can also right click a phone in google webside and have it find photos which are similar to the one you are looking at. Just make sure you do not put your home made porno on googles pictures.

To say that Apple should give us more free storage because Google give us unlimited free storage is nonsense.
Neither Google nor Apple give you anything for free.
Apple give you 5GB and you pay for it with the hardware.
Google give you all kind of "services", for which you pay with your privacy and your time.
No thanks, spyware company.

Not really. Come June WWDC Apple will come out with new freebies and better plans.

I am making 2 points with my comments.
