MWNY : a non event

MWNY was a lame event , concerning hardware except some minors modifications of the I pod, the 17 inch I mac with geforce 4 mx graphic card, there is nothing new.

For future software, there is the release of Jaguar in august : all features already presented in the developper conference.

The register said that we shall see an update of the Powermac in august. I think we'd rather see this update in september at Paris. I think that august is not a good date for a major update : too many peoples are in hollidays .

If the powermac is updated, then we have great chances to see updated i mac. I think that there will be a speedbump and that all the mobo will turn into geforce 4 mx.

I expect that Paris will be not as disapointing than MWNY.

Get off the MacWorld bandwagon guys -- Apple already has. The PowerMac update is more likely in August than at the Paris MW expo. August is not a bad time to introduce a new machine -- vacations have nothing to do with it. These are Pro machines and the pros will hear about it when they get back from vacation, if they even get any time off in the summer instead of being busy working on whatever they probably need to have done in time for the Xmas buying season.

at what point are people going to remember that apple is trying to MOVE AWAY from announcing major things at macworld , due to sales slumps before the show and having to meet deadlines on hardware???

I agree entirely. All the more reason that Apple should have updated its power line PRIOR to the show, and prior to upcoming Macworlds. Yeah, I know Jaguar wasn't ready, and yeah, the moto and chips may not be there yet, but why not at least trim production of the current towers? Evidentally Apple are sitting on five weeks of lame product. The Maya news was refreshing, but, man, the power line needs an update!

Well, what is wrong with 5 weeks of inventory on PowerMacs?

That's about how long it will be before they announce the new ones anyway. I'd say it's pretty close to perfect.

W all realize, of course, that the theme of MWNY was switch, right?

MWNY was one big Switcher Commercial... or were the vids as it opened not an obvious theme setter enough for you?

That said it was purely a consumer event. And the single biggest thing the consumer responds too is not speed my geek-o friends, but 'what can I do with it?'

Apple is making a case for what people can do with the machines, not trying to get into a speed pissing match.

The machine is the machine, but the OS is the thing... what they see while using it... not the hardware specs so many of you find so dear or critical.

Most of you found it boring because you didn't get WOWed by the Mega-Surprise.

A switcher will find the content very intriguing.

And in that regard it was a great event.

    Exactly.

I really thought a lot of the software that was shown off was quite nice and I'd much rather wait a little while for good PowerMacs instead of taking whatever junk could be scraped together in time for hte MacWorld deadline.

It seems they want MacWorld to be more consumer "what can I do with a Mac?" oriented which is a good thing in my opinion.

The audience is full of people who are already Mac users and generally the most hardcore at that. So the logical theme is "Switch", an advertising campaign targeted at PC users not familiar with Macs? Yeah that makes a lot of sense.

As someone who writes on AI a great deal, you should know that waiting for so-called "good" PowerMacs is precisely what a number of people have been doing for quite some time now.

What leads you to believe that Apple has something "good" right around the corner? Considering that none of us really know what is in the pipeline, it's entirely possible that the "good" update is already available. I can imagine a scenario in which Apple is trying to sell current inventory at current prices to minimize the hit they would take if they released new towers today.

By the same token, it's entirely possible that no upgrade is ready at all. For all we know, a new upgrade might be months away. Your retort about waiting for "good" PowerMacs is as uninformed as my wish that they had updated the Macs earlier.

Your sarcasm is dead-on accurate. The apologists for the current PowerMac line can't convince us that the audience at Macworld would have been displeased to see a PowerMac update. They would have loved it, a substantial update, that is.

yeah, apple has released hardware outside of the US. They've released stuff in Tokyo and Paris.

i can't remember specifically, but i know old ibooks were released at Paris.

would someone (who remembers) please note the hardware released outside of the US?

I wouldn't say it was a non event. At least the music at the beginning was cool.

I admit, I was a little dissapointed at the MWNY showing. But not too much. Software is more important to me than hardware, and Jaguar and what Apple is doing with software is great!

I'm personally not bummed about the .Mac thing because I was paying for extra harddisk space anyway. So, this is all a bonus for me. I have no problem paying $100/yr for .Mac, because I use all of it A LOT.

However, I have family that only use iTools for e-mail. They will not want to bother spending $100/yr just to keep their current e-mail accounts. I don't know what to tell them. This is certainly a bummer for them.

I really think Apple should have a minimal charge for e-mail only. Like $20/yr with 5MB e-mail space so people can keep their .mac e-mail accounts.

Yeah. Apple did say there would be more focus on special events, not MW Expos.

Special events don't put them on a timetable like Macworld does.

It keeps the surprise factor a little higher also.

    Apple just sent a message.

Don't blow your wad over a Macworld Expo.

But software means little to the masses at AI and the other boards. It all about "cool" and "wow" factors.

Software is just 'uncool' I guess.

    Let's quickly recape MYNY:

    ?iTunes 3.0

    ?QuickTime 6.0

    ?New iPods

?17in iMac - and it still look well proportioned!

    ?Cheaper iMacs

    ?SuperDrive in eMacs

    ? .Mac <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Sure it was a bit lame, but we still had some decent stuff. Just look around the corner though - I think we heaped too much expectation on MYNY because we are waiting for this lot which is just around the corner -

    ? Jaguar 10.2 - August date confirmed!

? New G4 (Maybe it will be a G5 by the time it is released.)

    ? PowerBook update

    ? iBook update

? And at least some of these iDevice rumors have got to be true.....

I say wait and see, shoot me if you don't seem a fair few of these by the end of September!

As a new Mac owner (my first one ever), I started getting caught up in the excitement of what might happen. I really got into the whole Mac culture and I've started getting active on these boards. I'm a hardware nut, both PC and Mac, so I was kind of hoping for something really cool.

    Bleh.

I found out today that my Powerbook that is less than a month old is going to cost me another $129 to keep current, 2 months after I purchased it. I also found out that my iTools account, which I thought was one of the coolest parts about being a Mac owner, is now going to cost me, after being told that it was free for life.

I also found out that my iPod, which I bought last week, has dropped $100 and has new features now. Thank God I can still return it for one of the new ones.

I'm not against Apple making money. Heck, Apple is the only thing keeping MS from owning the entire industry. I just thought maybe, just maybe, Apple truly was different. Maybe they cared enough about their customers not to screw them and still be able to make some cash.

In September, I bought a Dell Inspiron. This was a couple of months before WinXP was due to arrive. Dell gave me a certificate to upgrade to WinXP Pro for no additional cost, not even shipping. As much as Dell stinks (ordering the darn thing was a story unto itself), I still thought that was pretty classy.

Crap. I love my Powerbook, but this really p1sses me off.

I don't see how that helps since the last time they did that people still sat there whining about how apple sat on it's ass.
