I'm certainly no apologist for the current PowerMacs. I was personally disappointed that Apple didn't at least announce a Power Mac update was in the works, even if it wouldn't be ready for a month or two. (Existing unsold stock be damned!)

But... think of it this way. A lot of people at MWNY are people selling software and products for the Mac. Seeing Apple's approach for luring Windows users to the Mac is important to many of these people. The better Apple succeeds with "Switch", the more Mac users there will be, and the more Mac users there are, the more customers there will be for the MWNY antendees to sell to.

However, I have family that only use iTools for e-mail. They will not want to bother spending $100/yr just to keep their current e-mail accounts. I don't know what to tell them. This is certainly a bummer for them.

I really think Apple should have a minimal charge for e-mail only. Like $20/yr with 5MB e-mail space so people can keep their .mac e-mail accounts.

Since you're going to have a >Mac account anyway why not offer to let them piggyback on your service. Additional email only accounts are only $10 a year. $100 is way too much for email. $10 might be bearable.

Don't forget, all the software introduced today (except for Jaguar) will be completely FREE! Hardware is updated when it is ready, not when January or July rolls around. I, for one am impressed with the way Apple is moving on software and their plans for the digital hub.

As for negatives, there is the relatively high price of upgrading OS X and the new cost of iTools services which had been free until now. I wish Apple would keep some minimal iTools (.Mac) services available for free, or at least free for a couple of years with the purchase of a Mac.

17" imac. ehhh, kinda like the 14" ibook.

20GB iPod. i don't like the touch sensitive jog wheel but i guess the extra space is good if you use it for more than just music.

crt imac hobbling. sucky. why the hell dont they drop the price of these already.

Quicktime6. $20 for mpeg2 support? need to upgrade $30 from qt5? mp4 support is really nice.

iCal. id probably never use it, although it does look decent.

itunes3. ehhh, no big deal. i just want something that looks nice and plays mp3s. i can create my own playlists.

Jaguar. an upgrade would be nice, $50 for 10.1 and $75 for 10.0. ichat is completely useless, there are how many other alternatives? why do i need another? Rendezvous looks nice but it is open source, so its not really a feature. its like apple saying they finally added tcp/ip support. Inkwell will be absolutely useless to most users. it should be a pay for product($15) that can also be bundled with tablet devices. Bluetooth support while again nice, isnt an apple exclusive technology. So no real draw there.

no real software advancements besides inkwell, and even that isnt a big deal.

.mac. big frowns on apple. hotmail is free, yahoo.com is free, many others are free. but they have upgrade options, take a hint apple. what happened to not needing a floppy because we had a free idisk, or free email. Give me a damn floppy drive back now. this really has me pissed. i moved over all of my email from many other services because mac.com was so nice and easy and free, and apple promised it would be free forever. very very dissapointing.

Overall nothing great, just a bunch of dissapointments, and useless(to most of the community) software, most of which have freeware equivalents. underwhelming.

Some of your other points were good, however, I would not compare the 17" iMac to the 14" iBook.

The 14" iBook could be a lot better when compared to the 12", but it's not. $300 gets you almost nothing but a bigger hard disk.

In the iMac, $200 gets you a MUCH better display, bigger hard disk and faster graphics.

    Dear Steve,

I'm not using iTools and I'll not.

I'm not using iApps and I'll not.

I'm not using an iPod and I'll not buy one.

Syncing data from a computer to a phone, I saw that more than one year ago with a Wintel.

.mac is .net, hey Steve your name is Bill ?

I won't buy Jaguar too expensive and my iBook won't take advantage of it (pleas don't sell macintosh that won't support features of new OS).

What I will buy is a G5/POWER4/POWER5 powerbook/powermac but there are no.

So, Steve, my next computer will be an AMD or intel one running linux...

    See you never more

Online services like this at these sorts of prices are going to become far more prolific over the next couple years.

[quote]I'm not using iApps and I'll not.

Eh. Your choice but considering they are free I think you foolish considering their quality compared to some paid alternatives.

[quote]I'm not using an iPod and I'll not buy one.

I'm not a big fan of the iPod but it's the best mp3 player out there. I've been searching for one for a friend as a present and the updated line has made a very easy decision now. It's just a matter of if I want one...

Big difference between demonstrations and actual releases. If half of what I have seen over the past 2 years had made it to the market at large there would be a lot of very happy people. iSync, like it or not, is destined to have a great future and is a great step forward for consumers.

[quote].mac is .net, hey Steve your name is Bill ?

It's Steve and he's smart enough to know when to jump on a good revenue train that can't be escaped. A lot of the past methodologies used in cyberspace are now unsustainable. A lot of large portals will be using bundled services like this in the future.

[quote]I won't buy Jaguar too expensive and my iBook won't take advantage of it (pleas don't sell macintosh that won't support features of new OS).

That's just naïvity speaking. There is a lot in Jaguar that an iBook can and would take advantage of. Furthermore no company supports old hardware forever. Even Microsoft's next major release is going to have some rather hefty demands in terms of graphics.

I wish you a lot of fun with your AMD or Intel PC. I would be intereted to know why exactly you even think you need a G5/POWER4/POWER5? You need a name to satisy you hey? Guess some people are easy.

Personally I would gladly take a boosted G4 to a lot of those chips currently for a desktop and I can promise you I'm fairly certain I need high-powered workstations a lot more than you do.

I'm not sure of that Telomar. I'm just playing with 100 CPU computers SGI, SUN, clusters..

I have months of computation to run (not photoshop omptimized for altivec) and big graphics need. XServe has not enough comuting power (when will we 4 processors ?). This why I want Power4/Power5/G5 and this is how Apple can increase its market.

Apple throws up iApps, iDevice because they have nothing on the CPU side

See, I don't think the XServe, in a standalone 1 rack setup is anywhere near intended for this. One of the big setups like they show on the XServe page maybe. The way I see it, if you're using 100 CPU clusters you're out of what market they're targetting

Maybe, but it's the problem. How many cluster lintel are there in the world today ? Apple doesn't want this market (dell, compaq, ibm,hp) ? Maybe Apple prefers to compete with Sony...

A rack of XServe with Power4/OS X will make me happy...

I realize from reading all of the post, that we are spoiled. We expect more, because we have more!! I was let down by all of the desire to attrack Windows/PC users. But Apple thinks they only want admin. software, and not production or gaming equipment. No games were announced, Maya was announced, but Steve acted like it was no big thing. I don't need a calendar that bad or syncing. My life will never be that complicated, but if it is...I'll be in a nut house shortly after that!! Steve Jobs even looked disapointed in the presentation. Watch his face during the play back when the speakers were there from Sony and the other communcations software company (forgot who he was)...It was like Steve was saying...How can

I keep this enthusiastic act going for 30 minutes more.
