Buy windows hahahahahha man I have and I see nothing over here that makes me want to make it my primary computing platform. It's still the same crappy Windows OS with a slight facelift and ever increasing ways to impede my usage of non Microsith tech. Ummmmm no thank.

As for $100 a year. Not a problem. Musicmatch cost me $30 just for a friggin MP3 Encoder/Player. I don't have a cool program on Win2k like iPhoto either nor does Microsoft give one hunk of poop on Web Services that "I" want.

    1. Do you REALLY need more powerful hardware?

    2. Or, is it PC envy?

Now, if it was a software issue that was the problem, like the OS, I can see where the whining would be coming from.

Yeah, I too would like to see new, faster towers. It is going to happen but it won't be real significant until a whole new processor is developed.

Shut up, smartass. I DO think 6-9 months is a pretty long time to go without touching their "flagship" product. But I'm not acting like others around here and saying stuff like "Apple is doomed...it's all over!" or making silly, idle threats to migrate to Windows every time a Macworld Expo comes up short.

You're right (about one thing, anyway): I am very conservative (and rooted in reality...well, mostly) in my desires/predictions. So I'm never let down and I'm never freaking out over the lack of some ultra-GHz Mac.

Look through some of my OTHER posts (as carefully as you seem to have some already) and you'll see that I've always been more into the usability/integration/simplicity aspect of the Mac and the OS than sheer speed, bells and whistles, etc.

Find a post I've made where I'm standing up and SCREAMING for "dual 1.xGHz whatevers" and I'll mow your yard.

I'll never migrate to Windows. I've learned on a Mac, make my living (and hobbies) with a Mac, know the Mac, have invested in the go-alongs, etc.

Plus I LIKE the Mac, and damn near everything about it and Apple.

No, Apple isn't perfect. Never said they were.

All I AM SAYING (like herding cats around here sometimes...) if you're truly "let down", upset and angry that Apple doesn't have the speed/power you need (or, in most cases, WANT), there are other computers out there.

Why is this so hard? There are some PCs in the high-GHz (and over 2GHz) ranges these days.

Buy one of THOSE and shut up already, for crap's sake.

But I like and support more about them than I dislike.

For my needs, uses, etc., I'm satisfied. Maybe if I was a hardcore gamer or 3D animator or whatever, I'd see it like some of you (constantly upset over MHz and processor).

    But I ain't. So I don't.

And I'm optimistic about something else, too, 'rat.

    Hey now!

I think 90% of the bitching here is a result of .mac, not a lack of new powermacs.

(btw, my "Shut up, Apple is perfect." quip wasn't directed at you.)

Don't blame me... I have no free will. I couldn't help posting it, whether it made sense or not.

And I couldn't give a rat's ass about desktops. Think Secret was right about everything, and they also predicted G4s in excess of 1.2 GHz in August. Sounds good to me. I'm pissed about .mac, nothing more.

it's funny how everyone is complaining, but how many of you were really gonna buy anything today? it would have been nice if updated powermac's came out today, but oh well, you winers are gonna have to wait a month! as long as apple keeps the upgrades coming, it only means better specs when i'm ready to buy! ! for now my 533 is just fine!

    i'm waiting til' january!

You know, I was whining about it this AM (the .Mac thing), but since they came right out and said it's a bean-counting thing, I don't mind at all - it wasn't shorunded in the spin I was expecting... maybe it just caught me offguard. The straightforward approach has made me change my take...

Hell, I never used iDisk before, but iSync handling some basic things for me via the iDisk makes it completely worth the money in my eyes... am freakin' sick of trying to keep up with schedule files across systems anyway.

Still, the .Mac name blows, no matter what joke is used in response. It's petty... but that seems to be the MO between them these days, of course.

It's easy to get in a huff about the lame MacWorld with no real killer hardware released.

Wait a minute, I mean, it SEEMS like it's easy, judging by the cries here.

I'll admit, my initial reaction during the keynote was "dude, come ON!" as in, release SOMETHING!

But jeez, sit back and look at it. Jaguar is going to kick some serious ass. We got a new iMac with a GeForce 4, 80 gig hard drive, and a 17" widescreen LCD with great resolution. The cost of a 10 GB iPod now gets you a freakin' 20 GB model, with many improvements.

Apple just gave us a TON of great stuff here today, people. I suppose the PowerMac crowd is dissapointed, but really, who the hell expected them to bump them today? Not many folks who visit here, or many other Mac sites regularly, could have seriously expected a faster PowerMac. I think we all know they're getting their makeover in a few weeks time.

I don't know about you guys, but I am still completely stoked about being a Mac user.

    It's all good.

I agree here as well..my Ti500mhz is doing just fine for what I NEED. Many are just hung up on the mhz number game without real basis. If you are running aps or designing web pages. high end graphics, etc. then you have a right to get impatient waiting for the next pro tower. But if truth be known, the majority of Apple owners are probably not any of the above. I am happy with my Ti500, i left windows in feb. 2001 to this, my first apple computer and i have not looked back at windows yet (accept for my gov. job of course).

This is the most lively, easiest to use and downright awesome platform there is. I will let those who want to gripe do so, because i think each has a right to their opinion. I see apple as a visionary company, looking way ahead at what can be done. I am patient enough to wait and follow them.

Murbot. I think you nailed it.

Today was about more than 'power'Macs (and I DID want them...and I won't buy a tower until I get 'next gen'...but...) Apple seemed to grow up an awful lot today.

Jaguar is stunning! I can't wait to upgrade my wife's ibook!

The keynote had so much great software in it. Integration. Functionality. iapps. All the stuff Apple are gonna need to 'switch' on the 'switchers'.

Paying for the Jag'? Paying for .Mac. Boost those apple profits...

I think I'll upgrade to Photoshop 7 as well!

That new iMac. £1675 inc VAT in UK. I'm a little bit tempted... Gorgeous wide screen. Nice graphics card up date. Just cpu and bus speed. But they may get bumped relatively soon..?

I'm sure towers will turn up...reasonably soon.

    QB]

Yes. I do. And no, I'm not leaving Mac now--and won't until I'm forced to do so.

I can only afford about 1k$ every year for a machine--so I picked up the G4/533/DA/Radeon on education discount about a year ago. I love the machine and am getting used to OSX.

But, it is NOT powerful enough for a lot of tasks. Editing 100MB sound files is possible [which was not practical on my G3/upgrade]--but it could definitely be faster and make my day better. Not to mention that video-game performance is truly lacklustre: literally on-par with my ca 1999 PC [I have 3 PMacs, 1PC].

I will own the fastest Mac that I can afford--but I cannot afford 3k$ for a machine. Unfortunately, Macs don't have the aftermarket that x86 has, whereby I can build a dual 1.8GHz Athalon system for 700$ and put my existing hardware into it.

I'm not surprised _at_all_ that Apple didn't put out upgraded PMacs today: the tech part of the economy is in RUINS--the folks who buy good machines can't afford to. It'll take some real incentive to get them to any time soon.

This is probably why Jaguar is going to cost money: I was looking forward to not having such a slow OS--now, I'll have to pay. So I probably won't, since I dont actually want any of the other features it offers. No big deal.

I think the combination of marginally better hardware in August, shipping w/Jaguar will show something like a 30% increase in speed over the current line [marketed as more] and _that_ will be an incentive for power users and corporations to move their two-to-three year old machines to the latest systems.

Two things MUST happen: Apple system performance needs to improve more than marginally, and Apple hardware prices need to come down to a point where more people can afford them.

Look how dismal the tower improvements have been: the difference between a current single-cpu machine in 2002 and the original G3 B/W introduced in January 1999? Faster ENet, PC100->PC133, and PCI2x->AGP. Though necessary, these changes are _TRIVIAL_! It's essentially the same machine w/a faster CPU. Dual CPUs is way cool: but they're blastedly expensive! The cheapest dualie I can possibly buy from Apple it 2.67k$

In a nutshell: if the requirements of software I need to run exceed the ability of affordable Mac hardware to _run_ it, then the Mac cannot fulfil its role as a home computer by running the software packages I need. Thus, I would no longer be able to use a Mac and _THAT_ would "suck more than anything that has ever sucked before."

I think we got what the rational among us pretty much expected. Well, the release of 10.2 was a little surprise. BUT there are two things that suck: having to pay full price for the 10.2 upgrade (you can play the marketers' game and call it Jaguar if you want, but it's still an upgrade) and the fact that Apple refuses to devulge a roadmap for it's PowerMac's future.

The fact is the previous rleases of OS X are really betas, yet people have paid full price for them. Now the first really workable version comes out (still missing plenty of hardware support) and we're expected to pay full price again. (Yeah, it's fast and cool, but isn't that what the orignal OS X experience was supposed to be?)

So you say "go over to Wintel if you don't like it" (kinda reminds me of the people who told the Antiwar protesters in the 60s, "America, love it or leave it!"). 1) Be careful what you ask for, you might get it-and see Apple's market share fall another point- and 2) the other option for those of us who own an OS X license is to not pay for the upgrade (i.e. get a copy from a friend) or continue using OS 9. 3) And stick with processor upgrades until a new Power Mac comes out that justifies its cost (Besides the faster bus--133 vs 100-and faster video cards, which can also be easily upgraded, what other significant hardware improvements are there in the current PMs that would justify my buying one over a CPU upgrade?)

Yeah, I agree. The amount of "I'm gonna move to PCs" over and over, then seeing only one or two people actually switch is depressing. But I think a lot of the ranting here is justified...a lot of the moves Apple made today really annoys me too.

[quote]You're right (about one thing, anyway): I am very conservative (and rooted in reality...well, mostly) in my desires/predictions. So I'm never let down and I'm never freaking out over the lack of some ultra-GHz Mac.

Yep. I was just noting how even you, conservative as you are, overestimated what Apple would introduce. Even I (I consider myself even more pessimistic than you), thought they'd refresh the tower line, even if just a small speed bump. The cases definately could use modification. It's been beaten to death, but only one full size drive bay is a real drag. I have pics of my uglified G4 with an extra CD drive drooling out...it's not a good time.

    Ah, there we go. See?

Yeah, I know. In fact, so much so, one starts to believe you wouldn't accept a 2GHz PowerPC, if one ever came out.

I thought the same thing you know...I'd never switch, PCs are dirty and you should wash after touching one, etc. But after coming to the realization that Apple would never catch up and be the speed/industry leader they used to be, always breaking ahead, I became more open minded, and stopped shunning the thought of using Windows.
