Well, now we have an idea about .mac, and while it may be a so-so deal, in typical Apple fashion there is no cost effective lesser option for it's users. Most people on the internet will get if not all of the service they need from their ISP.

They won't sell much of these untill the price comes down. I find it seriously hard to believe that a new mac purchase doesn't have enough margin in it for Apple to find a little server space for you, for at least 1 year!

    Bastards,

On the way, I think, are the worst 90 minutes of SteveExpo since flowerpower and blue dalmation. I wonder if they've dusted off a new pattern, afterall they spent precious R&D developing that technology and they only used it twice. I know what will make PowerMacs faster, a new pattern, ACID TRIP! Huh? Random geometric patterns and spots of light reminiscent of the acid trip you'd have to take in order to find a powermac a good deal at this point.

just keeping the spirit of the thread alive, .Mac might actually be interesting, nah maybe not...

server space costs. bandwidth costs. especially if you've got people signing up for 5-10 iTools accounts apiece. not everything in life is free. live with it.

there's enough extra stuff coming with .Mac that shoudl make it well worth the price. virus scanning, backup software, and who knows what else is yet to come.

.Mac is lamer than a two legged mule. I guess Apple is feeling like they don't need every sale any more. Ah Hell, obviously we're just as much mere revenue streams to Apple as lusers are to M$. I probably will pay for the fist year just because of continuity concerns but after that I think I'll just swith to a static IP service and run my website and email off my own machine. All of that money is coming out of what I have to spend on tech, which will probably affect what I buy. Hell, I can be treated like crap by my OS vendor for a hell of a lot less money.

If all Steve's got to announce is the the .Mac downgrade and Jaguar shipping real soon now why doesn't he save everyone the time and just issue a press release and go home.

What they have to offer I don't need. Not everything in life is free, such as for instance the $3000 Mac I bought from Apple and friends or the $250 or so I've spent on Apple OS and Application upgrades since then. Somehow I think Apple has more than recovered whatever expense 20 megs of server space and a couple meg of POP server space has cost them over the last couple years. Obviously the whole iTools thing was a bait and switch program.

"Well lets have a conference call BITCH good and proper, while we wait in joyful anticipation for the dissapointment we all perversely expect.

They had the nerve to say they were surprised by the fall off in unit sales (especially over the last two months)"

Are we surprised..? I'm surprised Apple didn't see it coming...which leads into...

"WELL NO SHJT! You expect us to line up and throw money at machines that used to actually cost less, or machines with 18 month old MoBo technology and 1/2 speed CPU's ?"

Spot on. iMacs get a price hike for out of date technology. Once for the privelage of going to a stunningly flat screen design. And another because the flat screen they used was costing too much. So after that..? The 'Flat' iMac ends up being a firm mid-user computer. Wayyyyy TOO much(!) money for 18 month old mobo tech and 1/2 speed cpus. It sucks. It sucks big time! And the graphic cards sucks! It's 18 months out of F********** (I think that's how you spell it...) date!!! The fact you can't upgrade the graphic card to a titanium Geforce card SUCKS! Just make the base BIGGER and make it upgradeable. Almost £2,000 grand for built in obselesence(I didn't spell that right!) My spelling sucks..!

"Get your heads out of your asses Apple. Have competitive product at reasonable prices, will sell."

Apple's fabled sacred cow. Users will pay a premium for out of date tech'. No we won't. No THEY won't. NO I WON'T!!! Get with the program Apple! The iMacs are NOT good value for money. Take away the superdrive and the top end model SUCKS! Replace the fancy plastic with beige tower-ville and it's a horror story of yesteryear's components.

"The rest is just BS, save your crying about margins and the rest for someone who cares. 27%+ is more than good enough. If you had units worth buying (@ decent prices) the MARKET SHARE you claim to care so much about would give you more than enough unit sales to pick up the slack of a slimmer margin."

Had to laugh Matsu. I almost wet myself laughing at this diatribal rant. I was miming it as I read it. Darn. I wish I'd a said it!!!

Pile 'em high, sell 'em cheap. When they learn that lesson...then they'll begin to compete with Dell in the edu' sector. Otherwise, D*LL will down size them! They need a dirt cheap market share builder. A hookline for all those store visiting 'switchers'.

"PS, and Steve, wear an f-ing suit for once you hippie bastard."

Don't agree on this one Matsu...remember what happened the LAST time he did that?!

Oh yeah...the 'power'Macs are sh*te. Apple's best? Their 'pro' line? They don't compete with proper worksations in performance (yeah...they're close on price alright!) They are using 18 month out of date mobo tech. An almost four year old G4. A lame souped up G3 upon glorified high. Whose saving grace is altivec. Great in a few specialised tasks. Doesn't help Lightwave benchmarks though! A pathetically feeble fpu unit that suffers serious penis envy when ever it comes near an Athlon in a Lightwave or Photoshop benchmark. x86 proving to be twice as fast.

The low end and mid-range 'power'Macs are a disgrace and I get fed up of fanatical Mac zealots defending the over priced crap puts out for its pro' line. compare a 'power'Mac 800mhz box with its closest x86 neighbour. Pounded into apple puree (spelling) by a 2.1 xp Athlon costing hundreds less with a monitor and extra ram included.

Yeesh. Get a tower out for under a grand Apple! What's yer problem?! What's with paying a grand and a half to get a machine that you can expand?

And Apple...get a decent Office app out. Just buy one for gawd sakes...tell M£ to just go ahead and cancel Office if they dare.

I'm sorry folks. I just can't get into my stride on this rant. Now that I've got permission for insanity...it's not the same. Y'know...like when they legalised CB Radio...

...and don't get me started on Moto'...that money losing bunch of...where the hell is that G5? Pull yer finger out!!!

I'm taking time off work to watch this crap? It's 9:41 ET you guys. Start frigging impressing me, make me buy a new Mac. I'm buying a new computer this summer, and if you don't impress me, so help me God I'll get a lobotomy and ask the Dude for a Dell.

Well, maybe nothing that drastic. But at the very least my money stays in the bank, and most likely many others with me. If they want to help AAPL stocks prices, sell me a computer that worth what you charge.

Well, to be fair, I'm a really busy guy with a FT job, a small business, family and personal commitments. I think the features of ICal actually sound pretty good, although he didn't say that it would play with a PDA. If it played nice with a Palm (or if they ever make an Apple PDA) then it'd be more useful.
